Mobil Museum Heritage in Movement Maria Emanuel Albergaria Museu Carlos Machado

Inaugurated in September 2008, in Sete Cidades, the Mobile Museum is intended to bring the Carlos Machado Museum closer to the population of São Miguel Island, especially to those who live far away from the urban centres. We started our field actions with pedagogical activities that were developed in schools, day-care centers and other institutions. This way, we tried to promote the museum s collections and provide access to contemporary culture. However, one of our main goals is to value local heritage and identity. By doing so, we enrich the Ethnographic collection and expand the knowledge about people and communities of the island. The Carlos Machado Museum is known as a "territory museum", a place of citizenship in which the Cultural and Natural Heritage of the island are the foundations of its collections.

MOBILE MUSEUM HERITAGE IN MOVEMENT 2008-2017 3

The Carlos Machado Museum, in Ponta Delgada, was opened in 1880, by the action of the naturalist and teacher Carlos Maria Gomes Machado (1828-1901). It began as a Natural History Museum, headquartered at the Lyceum of Ponta Delgada, where Carlos Machado was a teacher. Later, other collections were incorporated, counting today with a significant collection of Natural History, Art, Regional Ethnography, among others. 4

THE EMERGENCE OF THE MOBILE MUSEUM A Criação do Museu Móvel In 2006, under a different management, a new cycle of the History of the Carlos Machado Museum begins. The Museum assumes itself as a place for Everyone and as Territory Museum. Its main building closes to visitation for renovation work. 5

PARTICIPATION CITIZENSHIP TERRITORY HERITAGE DEVELOPMENT COMUNICATION ACCESS MUSEUMS IDENTITY POPULATION CULTURE APPRECIATION KNOWLEDGE ANTHROPOLOGY INCLUSION 6

Firts Steps Research and conception of the project. Regional Directorate of Culture purchased the vehicle and a designer created the project to adapt the vehicle as un exhibition space. The Museum searched for partnerships The main partner is Cresaçor (IPSS - solidarity economy cooperative), with whom we established a protocol. Others are local development entities, such as day centers, schools, and others non-profit organizations. After that, it was possible to develop the script and procedures to start field work.

IF PEOPLE CAN T GO TO THE MUSEUM, WHY NOT HAVE THE MUSEUM GO TO THE PEOPLE? 9
