Why imaginary numbers?

We know that x 2 0 for all x in the real numbers R.

Consider the following algebraic equation x 2 = 1 which has no solutions(roots) in R. Define i, the imaginary unit, to be a solution of the equation i 2 = 1. In other words, i = 1.

A complex number z = x + iy, x, y, R has two parts x = R(z), y = I(z), the real and imaginary parts, respectively.

Two complex numbers z 1 = x 1 + iy 1, z 2 = x 2 + iy 2 are identical (that is, z 1 = z 2 ) if and only if x 1 = x 2 and y 1 = y 2.
