Formula Writing and Naming for Covalent Compounds Notes: Practice: SO 3 P 4 S 5 N 2 S SeF 6 PCl 3 Si 2 Br 6 BF 3 SCl 4 P 2 Br 4 NF 3 CO Cl 2 O 7 SiO 2 N 2 O 5 SF 6 P 2 Cl 3 NH 3 FI 3 NO 2 CBr 2 To write Formulas: Tetrahydride Carbon Tetrachloride Diphosphorus Trioxide Dichlorine Heptoxide Carbon dioxide Hexaboron monosilicide Chlorine dioxide Iodine pentafluoride trioxide Phosphorous triiodide Carbon disulfide Nitrogen monoxide Diboron tetrahydride Sulfur dibromide Tetraphsphorus decoxide Phosphorus pentachloride sulfur trioxide Carbon dioxide pentoxide Sulfur hexafluoride

Naming and Formula Writing for Acids If an ionic compound begins with hydrogen then it is an. It will dissociate in water. These compounds can be given an name. For example, we have learned the following names: 1. HCl is hydrogen chloride 2. HNO 3 is hydrogen nitrate 3. H 2 SO 3 is hydrogen sulfite Notice that the endings for these 3 ionic salts are ide, ate and ite We use these endings to determine the name as follows. Drop hydrogen out of the name and drop the ending. If the name ends in ide then it becomes hydro ic. If the name ends in ate then it becomes ic. If the name ends in ite then it becomes ous. So for the examples above: Formula Ionic name Acid name 1. HCl hydrogen chloride hydrochloric 2. HNO 3 hydrogen nitrate nitric 3. H 2 SO 3 hydrogen sulfite sulfurous 4. HClO 5. HClO 2 6. HClO 3 7. HClO 4 8. HBr 9. H 2 SO 4 10. H 2 SO 3 11. HMnO 4 14. H 3 PO 4 15 HC 2 H 3 O 2 17. HBrO 3 18. H 3 BO 3 19. HCN 20. H 2 Cr 2 O 7 Write the formulas for these s (they may or may not actually exist!): bromic nitrous hydrosulfuric chromic chlorous nitric sulfurous chromic

Is it ionic or covalent? 2. If Ionic, is it variable? If so roman numerals 3. Does it start with H? If so, its an! Al 3 O 2 Be(OH) 2 Pb(NO 3 ) 2 Cu 2 S CaO AgCl HBr Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 CCl 4 FeSO 4 N 2 O 5 SiO 2 H 2 SO 4 N 2 S NaCl NO 2 SF 6 SO 3 Li 2 S KMnO 4 Carbon monosulfide Vanadium (II) phosphide Oxygen difluoride Hydrochloric Gold (I) phosphate heptoxide Cobalt (II) acetate Ammonium cyanide Triboron tetrahydride Tin (IV) sulfide Silver nitrate Bromic Titanium (IV) oxide Zinc chloride Antimony(V) bromide Chlorous Ammonium chloride Cadmium nitrate
