Name: Date: Social Studies Introduction: Basic Geography Period: Latitude Latitude is defined as a measurement of distance in degrees north and south of the equator. The word latitude is derived from the Latin word, latus, meaning "wide There are 90 degrees of latitude from the equator to each of the north and south poles. Latitude lines are pictured on the globe above. Latitude lines are parallel, that is they are the same distance apart. In fact, they are sometimes called parallels. At 7,926 miles (12, 756 km) in length, the equator is the longest of all lines of latitude. It divides the earth in half and is measured as 0 (zero degrees). Positions on latitude lines above the equator are called north and are in the northern hemisphere. Positions on latitude lines below the equator are called south and are in the southern hemisphere. Complete the following: a. Lines of latitude are parallel to the equator. b. There are 90 degrees of latitude north and south of the equator. c. The equator is at 0 degrees. d. Another name for latitude lines is parallels. e. The equator divides the earth into 2 equal parts. Write your own definition of latitude.

The reason for the location of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 north and south respectively is due to the axial tilt of the Earth. The Earth is titled 23.5 degrees from the plane of the Earth's revolution around the sun each year. The area bounded by the Tropic of Cancer on the north and Tropic of Capricorn on the south is known as the "tropics." This area does not experience seasons because the sun is always high in the sky. Only higher latitudes, north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, experience significant seasonal variation in climate.

What is Longitude? Longitude is defined as measurement of distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. The word longitude is derived from the Latin word, longus, meaning "length". The prime meridian divides the earth in half too. It is also 0. It passes through the community of Greenwich, England. The prime meridian, as do all other lines of longitude, pass through the north and south pole. This is shown in the diagrams below. Longitude lines are not parallel. They make the earth look like a peeled orange. There are 180 lines of longitude on the each side of the prime meridian. But on the opposite side, the prime meridian is not zero degrees but 180. Here, it is called the International Date line. Longitude lines to the left of the prime meridian give locations west, in the western hemisphere. Longitude lines to the right of the prime meridian give locations east, in the eastern hemisphere. Complete the following: a. Longitude lines connect the north pole with the south pole. b. The line of 0 longitude is called the prime meridian c. Longitude lines give directions east and west of the prime meridian. d. There are 180 degrees of longitude each side of the prime meridian. e. Longitude lines are not parallel like latitude lines.

Use the drawings below to answer the questions that follow. 1. Which picture shows lines of longitude? 2. Which picture shows lines of latitude? 3. Which picture shows the Western hemisphere? 4. Picture D shows which hemisphere? 5. The measure that demonstrates how far north or south a place is from the equator is shown in picture 6. The measure that demonstrates how far east or west a place is from the prime meridian is shown in picture Practice Determine the approximate positions (latitude and longitude) of the following cities by using the map on the next page. Notice that the latitudes and longitudes are both given in 5 increments, so you will have to estimate where the latitudes and longitudes are in between them. City Latitude (N or S) Longitude (E or W) Shanghai, China Hong Kong, China Keelung, Taiwan Pusan, South Korea Tokyo, Japan
