Chemwatch How To. Create Labels for Chemicals, Products & Mixtures. Dr Ian Lane Radiation and Chemical Manager Faculty of Science Version 1.0, April 2017

Outline: (i) Important Note! Part A: Creating a label for a Chemical or Product already in Chemwatch Part B:Creating a Mixture - Label / Mini-SDS

IMPORTANT NOTE! Internet Explorer is NOT supported by Chemwatch Developers Use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome when using Chemwatch!

Part A: Creating a label for a Chemical or Product already in Chemwatch Is Simples. but relies on an understanding Chemwatch Need to be familiar with GUI and interfacing nuances

Searches performed here MSDS type, LABELS, emergency info accessed here UQ Inventories accessed here only if you have authorised access

Search for the Chemical / Substance Type chemical / substance here DON T HIT ENTER!! Chemwatch will generate a list. Left click most suitable from selection here

Pick from Selected List. Make sure you have selected Labels

Label Gallery Default vs User Defined Tabs Select TAB Choose size/type required in GHS format Hover over.. Click on ARROW

Finished Label Save as PDF

Part B: Creating a Label for a Chemical Mixture or Product Not Already Listed in Chemwatch Access CREDO module here.

Credo GUI Number of tabs here Important Turn On!! Switches will turn green! Correct selection of items per page required

Product Identification Tab Insert Product Name Insert Catalogue Number this must be entered. It can be anything you like.

Manufacturer s Tab Enter your UQ Organisation Unit details

Credite Posteri Tab Enter Ingredient Name or CAS number (don t hit return) pick from generated list. Enter Ingredient Proportion Enter any further physical property information you may have on mixture.

Using Ingredient Molarity Rather than Percentage to Enter Ingredients in Credo Example: NaCl (0.8M) and NaHCO 3 (0.2M) Aqueous Solution To select Molarity rather than %, click here. To add Water as Balance: Click on Question mark in this field Select Balance A dialogue box may ask you to enter the molecular weight of salts in your mixture. You may also be prompted to enter the molecular weight of water, or the SG (specific gravity) of water: Molecular weight of water = 18; specific gravity of water = 1 Percentages are then calculated within the Review Ingredients tab.

Review Ingredients Tab Make sure the GHS switch is turned on (Green) Click here for each ingredient in the mixture & edit GHS properties further

Review Ingredients Tab (continued) A catalogue number must be entered. Click on the GHS switch to turn this on (will turn Green) Repeat this for all ingredients!

Review Classification Tab Make sure the checkbox for each of the ingredient s applicable Hazard Statements is selected.

Dangerous Goods Tab If you have an SDS for the product you are entering: Find the required information in Section 14 of the SDS.

Dangerous Goods Tab: UN Number If you do not have an SDS for the product or mixture, you are going to require the SDS s for all components of your product/mixture. See section 14 of each of the SDS s. Place the most ideal UN number in the UN/ID field (this should be based on the properties of the mixture.. Hot Tip: see Wikipedia for list of UN numbers Example: Mixture 1 Toluene 70% Hydrochloric acid 10% Water 20% Determining UN Number This would be classified for transport as a flammable liquid (due to toluene) and a corrosive liquid (due to hydrochloric acid), therefore choose IATA classification: Flammable liquid, corrosive, N.O.S.* This selection has UN number UN2924, so place 2924 in the UN number field.

Dangerous Goods Tab: N.O.S. Ingredient Lookup Determining if we need N.O.S. ING lookup: If the proper shipping name contains N.O.S.*, we need to list the hazardous constituents of the mixture as part of the shipping name. Click on the blue N.O.S. Ing lookup field and select the hazardous components of the mixture In Example 1 from above: toluene and hydrochloric acid would be selected by clicking the selection boxes next to them. This results in the correct shipping name: Flammable liquid, corrosive, N.O.S.* (contains toluene, hydrochloric acid)

Dangerous Goods Tab: Packing Group Determining Packing Group: Look at section 14 in each of the ingredient SDS s and choose the highest hazard group: Note: Highest Hazard = PG I Medium Hazard = PG II Lowest hazard = PG III In Example 1: From SDS s of ingredients for this mixture, Toluene and HCl both have PG II, so select PG II.

Publishing a Mini SDS and Printing a Label Once you are happy that all information is correctly entered, you can hit the PUBLISH button at the bottom of the Credo menu. A Mini-SDS should be rendered, showing all GHS and transport label requirements. The Mini-SDS will be stored within the Chemwatch Database. Printing a Label: In order to print a label for the mixture you have created, go back to the list of mixtures produced in Credo and navigate to the SDS ETC column. Hover the mouse cursor over the written page/tick icon for the appropriate mixture. A sub menu will appear with LOC! & LABEL icons. Left click on the purple LABEL icon. The Label Gallery will appear, whereupon you may select a suitable label for GHS compliance, or transport purposes.

Important Notes: Finding the Mini SDS again: Once the mini SDS is created, you can go back to the HOME module and search for the product/mixture you have just generated. Ensure the FULL selection button is selected. USE THE MINI SDS search, not the GOLD SDS search (click on MINI SDS in the SDS and Label menu area so that MINI SDS is highlighted). Chemical Inventory: Placing the Mini SDS into your Room Inventory Once you search for the product in MINI SDS and it appears don t left click on it to bring up the SDS, but use the cursor to hover over the name and right click and you can simply copy it and then open the manifest folder of the room into which it is to be and pasted, right click and paste it into the highlighted folder, as per any other SDS searched for.
