Dr. Ramesh GRU4L5 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions in 2-3 sentences. 1) If the producers absorb 100,000 kcal of energy from the sun, how much will be available to the tertiary consumers? 2) If the primary consumers have 250 J of energy, what will be available to the secondary consumers? 3) Unused energy is lost to the environment as what? Do Now!
Objective! The student will (TSW) analyze the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration using balanced equations.
Why are we learning this?! Ecology helps us understand the connections and relationships between living organisms and their physical environment.
Explore! Why is a solar-powered flashlight a bad idea? How are flashlights normally powered? If a flashlight is just powered by the sun, then when it is dark it won t be able to turn on. Instead we need to use ba@eries that store energy.
That s exactly the idea behind photosynthesis. Plants run off of solar energy, but if they didn t have a way to store it, they would die every time the sun went down (like a solar powered flashlight). So, just like a flashlight runs on a ba@ery (chemical energy), plants convert the sun s energy into chemical energy (sugar).
Photosynthesis!
Photosynthesis! Photosynthesis is the process where plants take in sunlight, water and carbon dioxide and produce glucose (a sugar) and oxygen.
Photosynthesis Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast
Photosynthesis! Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts.
Photosynthesis! Balanced Equation Carbon Dioxide +Water + Sunlight à Glucose + Oxygen 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Sunlight à C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2
Photosynthesis! Balanced Equation Carbon Dioxide +Water + Sunlight à Glucose + Oxygen 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Sunlight à C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 Reactants
Photosynthesis! Balanced Equation Carbon Dioxide +Water + Sunlight à Glucose + Oxygen 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Sunlight à C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2
Photosynthesis! Balanced Equation Carbon Dioxide +Water + Sunlight à Glucose + Oxygen 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Sunlight à C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 Products
Cellular Respiration! Cellular Respiration occurs when organisms take in oxygen and glucose and produce ATP (energy), water and carbon dioxide.
Cellular Respiration! Cellular Respiration is not the same thing as breathing!
Cellular Respiration!
Cellular Respiration! Cellular Respiration takes place in the mitochondria.
CELLULAR RESPIRATION 1. Cells can t use glucose for energy. 2. Cellular respiration is the process ALL organisms use to turn glucose into ATP ATP = Energy
Cellular respiration Cellular respira+on occurs in the mitochondria.
ATP! ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the cell s energy that powers all cell functions.
Cellular respiration ATP is the cell s energy. ATP powers active transport and other cell functions.
Cellular Respiration! Balanced Equation Glucose + Oxygen à Carbon Dioxide +Water + Energy! C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 à 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + 38 ATP
Cellular Respiration! Balanced Equation Glucose + Oxygen à Carbon Dioxide +Water + Energy! C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 à 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + 38 ATP Reactants
Cellular Respiration! Balanced Equation Glucose + Oxygen à Carbon Dioxide +Water + Energy! C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 à 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + 38 ATP Products
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration! Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. Autotrophs carryout photosynthesis to make glucose (stored energy), which the cell can turn into ATP (cell energy) later by the process of cellular respiration when it needs it.
FLOWCHART Photosynthesis Water + Carbon Dioxide Glucose + Oxygen Cellular Respiration Energy (ATP)
Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are opposites. What one creates, the other breaks down. Photosynthesis: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + sun à C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Reactants: 6CO 2 + H 2 O Products: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Cellular respiration: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 à 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + ATP Reactants: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Products: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O
