GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS. GIS Foundation Capacity Building Course. Introduction In recent times digital mapping has become part and parcel of our daily lives with experience from Google Maps on your mobile phone to Global Positioning Systems to the regular Satellite Navigation (Sat Nav) installed in most modern cars. Geographical Information Systems are central to this and have allowed us to go beyond simple maps to live and analyse information of many a phenomenon in our world. Governments, local authorities and private organizations have now come to realisation that GIS could leverage their decision making as a tool if adopted as an integral part of their core functions. More often the failure of many key policy makers in these organisations have been discouraged in this undertaking by huge budgets that GIS departments would require to source for software, hardware and staff. Often the proprietary software would be the single most expensive component of GIS start-up. Many organisations are looking towards Open Source GIS software as a money saving opportunity.
This action packed 6 days course comprises a series of presentations and computer-based practical sessions using Quantum GIS software with example data sets taken from a variety of fields. The main elements of the Quantum user interface are introduced and topics covered include: data management, data visualisation, geo-referencing, GPS, analysis, data presentation and reporting. Target This course is targeted to organisations aspiring to implement G.I.S Strategies in their problem solving and decision making processes, professionals who are new to GIS or those who want to advance their skills in using GIS Open Source Software. ANTICIPATED COURSE OUTCOMES / ACHIEVEMENTS Aims and objectives - To provide delegates with an appreciation of the fundamental concepts of GIS including its strengths and limitations - To explain the concept of Open Source software. - To introduce the core functionality of Quantum GIS software package. - To teach the fundamental skills needed to obtain, import, manipulate, analyse, interpret, manage and output spatial data in order to investigate topics in the delegate s area of interest. - To demonstrate real-world uses of GIS
