Giant Planets Or Why the Solar System Is the Way It Is Dr. Josh Colwell University of Central Florida

Almost everything you see in this image is a galaxy containing tens of billions of stars each.

Figure 1.1

Figure 1.7

Planets are very tiny compared to distances between them.

Mercury Made of metal and rock; large iron core Desolate, cratered; long, tall, steep cliffs Very hot and very cold: 425 C (day), 170 C (night) MESSENGER spacecraft will go into orbit next March.

Venus Nearly identical in size to Earth; surface hidden by clouds Hellish conditions due to an extreme greenhouse effect Even hotter than Mercury: 470 C, day and night

Earth Earth and Moon to scale (size, not distance) An oasis of life The only surface liquid water in the solar system A surprisingly large moon

Summary of Standard Model of Solar System Formation 1. Start with a cloud of gas and dust. 2. Stuff condenses at different distances from the Sun. 3. Once we have our seeds, gravity helps them grow through collisions into planets. 4. Jovian planets big enough to capture gas and form moons and rings. 5. Earth gets smacked and a Moon forms. 6. Solar wind gets rid of leftover gas.
