Really Technical Stuff

Benefits of the Geomatics Infrastructure: Counteracts some of the negative effects of a flat org-chart. Promotes consistency through standards Allows us to develop more advanced functionality Reduces repetitive GIS tasks. Gives us the ability to share our data externally through FGP

Challenges: Data centre capacity. Project interruptions & delays Air photos volume, conversions, etc. Map-Cache challenges Choosing a strategy Trouble-shooting, crashes, etc. A multi-year project in a changing world.

Lessons Learned Plan comprehensively Implement Incrementally (Roger Tomlinson) helped us develop a vision that is still relevant. Good system planning (Dave Peters methodology) paid off in working with SSC. A pilot project with ESRI Canada helped us resolve technical questions before we began. Build in time for SSC growing pains. Internal communications were important. Be patient, somewhat stubborn, and keep at it.
