Name: Astr 102 Lab #2 Lab bjectives 1) Learn hw t use the Stellarium planetarium prgram by becming familiar with the user interface and cnfiguring the planetarium t yur present lcatin n Earth 2) Learn abut the cnstellatins in the Orin regin f the sky 3) Learn abut the stars in the Orin regin f the sky 4) Plt stars n an H- R Diagram Setup This lab will be perfrmed in the Stellarium (versin 0.16.1 r newer) planetarium prgram. Yu can access the Stellarium Planetarium prgram n specific cmputers at the fllwing cmputer labs OC Bremertn: ST 122 Cmputers: 1-4 and 41-50 OC Pulsb: OCP 106 Cmputers: 11-13 OC Sheltn: OCS PA2 Cmputers: 1-2 r yu can dwnlad a free cpy at http://www.stellarium.rg/ (Windws, Mac OS and Linux versins f the prgram are available). Instructins fr installing the prgram and system requirements can be fund in the user s guide. If yu encunter sme prblems, try dwnlading a different versin f Stellarium by clicking n the lder releases link. Yu can access the user s guide frm the link n the Stellarium hmepage. 1) Learning the user interface and setting up yur hme lcatin Start up the Stellarium prgram. T lk arund the sky, pint the cursr t a lcatin n the sky, left- click and hld dwn the buttn, then drag the cursr arund. Use the muse scrll wheel (r Page Up/Dwn) t zm in and ut. At the bttm left f the screen, yu can see the Status Bar. This shws the current bserver lcatin, field f view (FOV), graphics perfrmance in frames per secnd (FPS) and the current simulatin date and time. If yu mve the cursr ver the Status Bar, it will reveal the Main- Tlbar which prvides additinal cntrls. T advance time frward and backward, click n the arrw tlbar. Frm left t right, the buttns will buttns n the Decrease the rate at which time passes and mve back in time (click multiple times t increase the speed) Make time pass as nrmal Return t the current time & date Increase the rate at which time passes (click multiple times t increase the speed)

When the muse is mved t the left, lwer half f the screen, the Left- Tlbar becmes visible. Set Lcatin: Click n the cmpass icn n the Left- Tlbar t bring up the Lcatin pp- up windw. Type Seattle in the search windw and then click n the Seattle ptin. Click n the t clse the Lcatin pp- up windw.

Main- Tlbar (mve the muse ver the Status Bar n the bttm f the screen): Frm left t right, the buttns will start the fllwing actins: Cnstellatins - Draws the cnstellatin lines Cnstellatin Names - Draws the name f the cnstellatins Cnstellatin Art - Superimpses artistic representatins f the cnstellatins ver the stars Equatrial Grid - Draws grid lines fr the RA/Dec crdinate system Azimuth Grid - Draws grid lines fr the Altitude/Azimuth crdinate system Grund - Tggles drawing f the grund. Turn this ff t see bjects that are belw the hrizn Cardinal Pints - Tggles marking f the Nrth, Suth, East and West pints n the hrizn Atmsphere - Tggles atmspheric effects. Mst ntably makes the stars visible in the daytime Nebulae & Galaxies - Tggles n/ff labels t mark the psitins f Nebulas and Galaxies Planet - Tggles n/ff indicatrs t mark the psitin f planets Infrmatin abut the ther buttns can be fund in the user s guide. Click n each buttn t see what actin they perfrm. Click again t tggle the ptin ff. 2) Cnstellatins in the Orin sky 2a) Advance time t arund 21:00 by using the arrw buttns n the Main- Tlbar. Click n the Cnstellatins Icn and Cnstellatin Names Icn n the Main- Tlbar t see the cnstellatins in the Orin regin f the sky. Slwly adjust the time until yu can see Orin lcated due Suth. In the large bx n the next page, plt the stars and draw the cnnecting lines fr the fllwing cnstellatins: Orin, Canis Majr, Canis Minr, Taurus and Gemini. (Draw the cnstellatins precisely) Click n the Equatrial Grid Icn n the Main- Tlbar t bring up grid lines t help align yur drawings. (Nte: yu can prject the sky using a Cylinder prjectin t see rectangular grid lines. Click n the Sky and viewing ptins Icn n the Left- Tlbar. Select the Markings tab at the tp f the View ppup windw. Then select the Cylinder ptin at the bttm f the new windw.) 2b) Label the cnstellatins names and label the main stars: Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Rigel, Sirius, Prcyn, Pllux, Castr and Aldebaran. 2c) Starting frm the cnstellatin f Orin, use the Orin pinter stars t draw dashed (- - - ) lines t cnnect t the fllwing stars: Sirius, Prcyn, Castr and Aldebaran. (Reminder: pinter stars cnsist f 2 r mre stars and the pinter stars will rughly align t the cnnecting star.)

3) Stars in the Orin sky Stars can be classified by their surface temperature and brightness. The spectral type f a star can prvide this infrmatin. Pint the cursr directly n the star and left- click t bring up this infrmatin. Fill ut the table with the spectral class and luminsity class f the stars. Read ver the Spectral Classificatin and Luminsity Class sectins in yur textbk t learn abut what these letters, numbers and Rman numerals mean. If yu see m at the end f the spectral type, it means the star has enhanced metal features. If yu see var at the end f the spectral type, it means the star has variable spectral features. Star Spectral Class Luminsity Class Sun G2 V Betelgeuse Bellatrix Rigel Sirius A0 V Prcyn Pllux 4) H- R diagram 4a) Using the spectral class and luminsity class in the table, plt the stars in a H- R Diagram in the bx. Label the star names. Lk at Figure 17.18a in yur textbk as a guide and draw in the main sequence line and the lines fr luminsity class IV, III, Ib and Ia. 10000L Castr Aldebaran 4b) Using the H- R Diagram, rughly estimate Aldebaran's brightness. Aldebaran is abut brighter than the Sun. 4c) Using the H- R Diagram and Figure 17.18a, rughly estimate the surface temperature f Aldebaran. 100L 1L Abut K 0.01L 0.0001L M O5 B5 A5 F5 G5 K5 M5
