Essential Question:What is matter and how does it change? 31 Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter. Atomic Theory: EVERYTHING around you is made of matter. Matter can be organized, changed, and rearranged. The Atom* Atomic nucleus Neutrons Protons Electron Cloud Not to scale. Electron Cloud What causes matter to change phases? Energy change speeds up or slows down how the atoms that make up matter react. 3 Main Phases of Matter: Solid: Slow moving atoms, rigid, definite volume, mass, and shape Liquid: medium speed atoms, moving, definite mass and volume, no definite shape. Gas: rapidly moving atoms, no definite shape or volume. But what is matter made of? Atoms are the building blocks of all matter. 1 Atom= Protons (+), neutrons(0), and electrons(-).

Essential Question: Is all matter the same? YES and NO! 33 Element: Different proton # in the Nucleus makes different heavier elements. Each element has different characteristics/ properties. These elements are organized in the Periodic Table. Molecules* Everything in the known universe is made up of a different arrangement of the same 118* elements. Elements/atoms are connected to each other through chemical bonds to make larger things like molecules and compounds. Molecule: 2 or more atoms joined together chemically. Compounds Not to scale. Compound: A molecule made up of 2 or more different types of atoms/elements.multiple molecules.
WHY ARE WE LEARNING ABOUT CHEMISTRY? Bio-Compounds a.k.a Organic Compounds Carbohydrates Lipids Proteins Nucleic Acids -Sugars and starch -Made up of C, H, O -A source of energy for the body -Fats, oils, waxes and steroids -Build the cell membrane -Build the structure of bodies: hair, muscles, tendons -Important part of the human immune system -Control chemical reactions (enzymes) -DNA and RNA -Found in the nucleus of cells -Facilitate genetic inheritance of all living things Starch Phospholipid Keratin DNA Not to scale.
