version : 1. abc General ertificate of Education Physics 51 Specification A PHYA Fields and Further Mechanics Mark Scheme

The specimen assessment materials are provided to give centres a reasonable idea of the general shape and character of theplanned question papers and mark schemes in advance of the first operational exams. Mark schemes are prepared by the Principal Examiner and considered, together with the relevant questions, by a panel of subject teachers. This mark scheme includes any amendments made at the standardisation meeting attended by all examiners and is the scheme which was used by them in this examination. The standardisation meeting ensures that the mark scheme covers the candidates responses to questions and that every examiner understands and applies it in the same correct way. As preparation for the standardisation meeting each examiner analyses a number of candidates scripts: alternative answers not already covered by the mark scheme are discussed at the meeting and legislated for. If, after this meeting, examiners encounter unusual answers which have not been discussed at the meeting they are required to refer these to the Principal Examiner. It must be stressed that a mark scheme is a working document, in many cases further developed and expanded on the basis of candidates reactions to a particular paper. Assumptions about future mark schemes on the basis of one year s document should be avoided; whilst the guiding principles of assessment remain constant, details will change, depending on the content of a particular examination paper. (b) The marking scheme for this part of the question includes an overall assessment for the Quality of Written ommunication (QW). There are no discrete marks for the assessment of QW but the candidates QW in this answer will be one of the criteria used to assign a level and award the marks for this part of the question. Level Good Modest Limited 1 escriptor an answer will be expected to meet most of the criteria in the level descriptor - answer supported by an appropriate range of relevant points good use of information or ideas about physics, going beyond those - given in the question - argument well structured with minimal repetition or irrelevant points accurate and clear expression of ideas with only minor errors of spelling - punctuation and grammar - answer partially supported by relevant points good use of information or idea about physics given in the question but - limited beyond this - the argument shows some attempt at structure the ideas are expressed with reasonable clarity but with a few errors of - spelling, punctuation and grammar - valid points but not clearly linked to an argument structure - limited use of information or ideas about physics - unstructured - errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar or lack of fluency Mark range 5-6 - 1-0 - incorrect, inappropriate or no response 0 examples of the sort of information or idea that might be used to support an argument forced vibrations (at 0. Hz)! amplitude fairly large ( 0 mm)! in phase with driver! resonance (at 1.5 Hz)! amplitude very large (> 0 mm)! oscillations may appear violent! phase difference at 90º! Question period is hours (or equal to period of Earth s rotation)! remains in fixed position relative to surface of Earth! equatorial orbit! max (b) same angular speed as Earth (or equatorial surface)! GMm = mω r! r π T = ω! r GMT = π = 11 6.7 10 6.0 10 ( π 600) 1/! (gives r =. 10 km) 6 ΔV = GM 1 1 R r! = 6.67 10-11 6 10 1 1 6 7 6. 10. 10 = 5.1 10 7 (J kg -1 )!
