New to the Library? Trying to find your way around and understand how the Library works? Here's a list of must-knows to help you get started. The University of Calcutta Library system consists of the Central Library, five Campus libraries, thirty-nine Departmental libraries and four libraries of the Centres of Advanced Studies. The libraries are spread over eight major campuses. The University Library, at present, has a collection of more than twelve lakh books. Besides books, the eight campuses of the University together possess more than two lakh bound journals, Ph.D. theses, proceedings of conferences, reports, maps, standards, patents, manuscripts, CD- ROMs, etc. The central, campus and departmental libraries serve the entire University community. The University libraries provide access to more than fourteen thousand electronic journals and over 3 lakh electronic books for all its users in all the campuses. Our students can download the e-contents from all the campuses through the University website. Please visit the official website of the University http//www.caluniv.ac.in for details. Overdue charges for students and research scholars : for the first 4 days after the due date Re 1 per volume (between first day and fourth day), 5 th day to 7 th day Rs 2 per volume (between 5 th day and 7 th day), and for the subsequent period i.e. after the 7 th day Re 1 per day per volume. Library Fees and other Charges Library fee for students Rs 200/- per year (to be collected at a time for entire academic session) Library fee for research scholar and provisionally enrolled PhD students Rs 200/- per year. Research scholars are allowed to borrow 5 volumes at a time for a period of 60 days from their respective departmental libraries against a refundable deposit of Rs 2000/- for the scholars under the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology, and Agriculture. For scholars of other faculties, a refundable deposit of Rs 1000/- only is applicable in the manner prescribed for the purpose. Temporary use by ex students Rs 100/- for 1 month and Rs 300/- for 3 months (except lending facility). Outside users/ private candidates for M.A. / M.Sc. Exam /dropped candidates Rs 100/- for 1 month and Rs 300/- for 3 months (except lending facility). Undergraduate and postgraduate students of the affiliated colleges of the University Rs 200/- per year (except lending facility). Lost library cards Rs 25/- per card. Another duplicate card for students and research scholars may be issued against a charge of Rs 100/- per card. Thereafter no duplicate card shall be issued. Lost token Rs 25/- per token Lamination Rs 10/- per membership card. Please note Before getting books issued any mutilations or markings should be pointed out immediately to the staff of the library and his/her initials be obtained there, otherwise the borrower shall be held responsible for mutilations and markings discovered afterwards. Students and research scholars found to be defaulters in respect of returning library books more than twice in course of two consecutive months or those who will not return books after a third reminder, may be denied the privileges and facilities of the library, both reading and lending. All library books lost by the borrowers be replaced by them by new copies. If copies are not available in the market, a well-bound photocopy is to be given to the library failing which the current price of the books not returned or double the original price, whichever is higher, is to be paid by the borrower concerned. Library cards are not transferable. At the end of each course of study conducted by the University and ten days prior to commencement of the final examination in different subjects, all regular student members must obtain Library Clearance Certificates issued in their names from the respective departmental/ campus libraries on surrendering library lending cards. Those regular student members who have lost any or both the lending cards must submit declarations to that effect to the University Librarian through the respective Heads of Departments in order to obtain Library Clearance Certificates. For each lost card, the student shall have to pay a fine of Rs 25 only. It may be specifically mentioned that no Admit Card is to be issued to a student without a Library Clearance Certificate. The departmental/ campus libraries shall collect such Library Clearance Certificate from the Central Library. Do s and Don ts Please Do make sure you know what library materials you have borrowed. Return them in time to avoid fines and as a courtesy to others. read or work quietly. bring your Library Membership Card with you. It is required for identification, borrowing library books and internet access purposes. look after library materials, equipment, furniture and facilities. Help keep them in good condition for future users. share the computer terminals they are for all library users. turn off or mute cell phones. offer for inspection any files/ cases/ books you are carrying when you are leaving the library. This is important for security reasons. ask library staff for help in any situation. Don t hesitate! We are here for you. Page 8
