Microplastics All particles <5mm (Arthur et al. 2009) MFSD Indicator 10.1.3 Amount, dristribution and compositon of microparticles. The attribute will establish baseline quantities, properties and potential impacts of microparticles. Microplastic is likely to be the most significant part of this. Barcelona convention common indicator EO10 Trends in the amount of litter in the water column including microplastics and on the seafloor.

Lack of data in the region - Quantities - Types - Distribution - Sources?????
WP5 - Microplastic Emerging and challenging issue (different sources, different behaviour, characteristics, monitoring toll) Part of European and Regional legislation Lack of data in the region Need to share available experience and knowledge with other institutes
Main goal of WP5 To choose common approach to assess microplastic pollution on sea surface (accumulation zones, fishery areas, river outflows), beach sediment and ingested by biota (commercially available fish); Analyse chemical composition of found microlitter; Analyse POPs on pellets and larger pieces; Start research activities on nanoplastic (<0,3mm) analysis.

WP5 Timeline 5.1 - Defining an assessment and monitoring strategy for microplastics in the Adriatic 5.2 - Pilot survey I based on modeling results (sea surface, beach sediment) 5.3 - Data collection, evaluation, processing, validation of modeling 5.4 - Pilot survey II in fishing areas (sea surface, biota) 5.5 - Data analysis and reporting
WP5 Outputs Recommendation document Training for partners on sampling and analysis First data on nanoplastics in the Adriatic region Pilot assessments Regional guidelines on monitoring microplastics Video guidelines on sampling and analysis Proposal of regional management plan for prevention and reduction of microplastic pollution
Sampling (planned) 2014 seasurface + riverine outflow + beach sediment sampling locations will be determined by the calculation of the accumulation zones of pollution by CMCC (accept Bosnia & Hertzegovina and Slovenia) 2015 seasurface + biota sampling locations will be in fishery areas (accept Bosnia & Hertzegovina and Slovenia) Foto: CMCC
