Environmental Geology Paul Lowery By: Christine Miks and Abseynia Machuca
Volcanos are an eruption, of gases and rock that shoots up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods The danger area around a volcano covers about a 20-mile radius. Fresh volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be harsh, acidic, gritty, glassy and smelly There are four major types of volcanoes, classified according to their shape, composition of their magma, and the way they erupt. They are: Composite Volcanoes (also known as Stratovolcanoes) which are the most common type of volcanoes, generally steepsided cone shaped mountains most of which have a crater at the summit and erupt with different kinds of lava, ash, and rock. Then there are Shield Volcanoes that are wide gentle-sloping volcanoes that have low viscosity lava flows. Cinder cone volcanoes are smaller single-vent volcanoes, that have shortlived eruptions and often have bowl shaped craters at the summit. Lava domes are rounded volcanoes which erupt with very viscous lava that doesn t flow great distances.
First we brainstormed ideas on what type of lab we would like to design. We decided to create a GIS lab. In the process of working on it we came to realize that is was going to be unsuccessful due to the lack of knowledge and skills we had on the GIS system. We got together with Mr. Lowery and created an volcanoes map using excel which we had to input the data from and then transferred it to the GIS map software. We picked seven volcanoes based on the ones study in class and classified them based on activity, latitude, longitude, elevation, width, composition, type, location, eruption and population.
Community The community it serves is Mr. Lowery and other science teachers, as well as future students of theses classes. The community will be served by being able to excess a map about volcanoes on our volcano website. Hopefully as well it will help Mr. Lowery out so he can use this information in his classes for a lab assignment. Community contacts: Mr. Lowery, Empacts lab
Learning objectives was that we developed a project that will benefit the college and the community. We choose to develop a lab for Mr. lowery and a map for students to benefit off of. We learned to use several technologies for this project for example flickers, Arch map and excel. We developed a problem solving skills through project based learning. Which was our lab questions with our map. We improved on our oral communication skills through out this project. We gained a better understanding of the course curriculum though project based learning by understanding the effects of volcanoes and what it has towards the environment as well as to the people living around that environment as well.
GIS map: which it lets you visualize, questions, analyze and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns and trends. Flickers: which is a new app that makes it easier to access organize and share photos from anywhere. Excel: which is a data analysis tool that helps you track and visualize data for greater insight plus with more ways to share.
The methodology process we used to complete our project was the waterfall cycle. Which consents of five steps. First step is requirements; which we had to use while doing our project design. Next step was design: we had to brainstorm ideas and see what technology we wanted to use. Third step was implementation: we tired putting it all together and the first idea didn t work so we had to go back and brainstorm and come up with a better solution. Fourth step is verification: had to verify it with Mr. Lowery to see if this lab design would work best. Maintenance which is the last step was to redesign the new lab and clean it up. The division of labor ended up being 50/50 since we ended up only having two group members. Christine gathered the information up while Abseynia typed the information in excel to design our map. Timeline: September 23 rd thru October 1, 2014 brainstormed ideas and decided on whose going to work on which part of the project. October 13 thru October 30 decided on which volcanoes we liked to do our project on. Gathered the information together. We also had to start looking at programs to help us build our GIS lab. November 12 thru the twenty realized we had to revise our lab. Month of December finished our lab up as well as our PowerPoint.
GIS map which people can locate and use the information to benefit them when needed. Lab that hopefully for the future students of Mr. Lowery environmental geology classes and for him as well. The skills gained from doing this project was; learning new technology skills as well as improving on them. Oral communication skills; within our group members and other peers. Teamwork; working together making sure everyone puts in their effort and dose their job. Forming friendships when having to work with new people can lead to friendships. Expanding our knowledge. From our research on volcanoes we learned their location, formation, composites, and how they effect us and the environment we live in. It also taught us how to meet deadlines so we can apply it to our future job.
