Worksheet To Accompany USGS Map Adventures Teaching Packet Lesson 3: View From Overhead Here is the last part of the story about Nikki s adventure. Nikki's Adventure Part Three: The balloon continued to rise. Nikki was now directly over the park. She could no longer see the sides of the buildings. Instead, she saw the tops of the buildings. The red and white top of the carousel now looked like a fancy pie. She was seeing the ground the way the birds see it. Nikki noticed a rope which was dangling by itself from the balloon into the basket. She grabbed the rope to steady herself. This let the air out of the balloon and the balloon started to slowly descend toward the ground. She saw that the balloon was drifting towards a large fenced pasture, located within the park, where she finally landed. Nikki had a wonderful adventure but she was glad to be on the ground and see her mother again. Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 1

Look at the picture of the park from Lesson 2. This is what Nikki saw just after the balloon took off. Look at the new view of the park. This is what Nikki saw when she had floated higher and just above the middle of the park. Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 2

Let s look at the park gate from all three views we have seen in lessons 1, 2, and 3. View from the ground View from above View from overhead All you can see is the top of the gate when you are high above it. You can also only see the top of the dinosaur slide, the top of the red and white roof of the carousel, and the tops of all other buildings from the balloon high above the park. This is not the way most of us are used to viewing things. This is the way most maps are drawn. The map of the part of Oakland around Hillcrest school that was created by MAP CENTER is that way. You can only see the outline of Ostrander Park. You can only see the tops of the streets and the surface of the creeks. Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 3

Think More About It There was a map of the park in the basket of the balloon. How might Nikki have used the map to help her get back to her mother? You ve used the Map Center to draw a map of the part of Oakland around your school. Where else have you seen or used maps? 1. 2. 3. Who might use maps in their work? 1. 2. 3. Why would you need a map? 1. 2. 3. Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 4

Here is an outline map of Oak Island. List things that might be on a map of the island. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Draw the things from your list of the map of Oak Island. Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 5

MAP CENTER Practice Session 2 You can get more than maps from MAP CENTER. You can also get photos taken from an airplane. The photos give you a picture taken from overhead. They are very much like the view of the park from overhead in Nikki s Adventure. Getting To Map Center There are several ways to get to MAP CENTER on the world wide web. The fastest way from any computer is to type the address of the MAP CENTER computer in the Address box of your web browser. The address for MAP CENTER is http://mapstacker.ousd.k12.ca.us/welcome.htm. Most computers at District sites have the District s web page as their home page. If you are already on the District s home page, the easiest way to get to MAP CENTER is to click on the Map Center link in the FEATURES section. 1. Click on the Interactive Maps picture. 1 2 3 2. Click on the Find a school: circle. 3. Click on the down arrowhead. 4. Find the name of your school. 5. Click on the name of your school. 5 4 6. Click on the Reference Map picture in Step 2. 6 Worksheet To Accompany Map Adventures Lesson 3 Page 6

You should get the same map you got in Lesson 1.! Click on the Show The August 1994 Air Photo button. MAP CENTER shows the air photo and not the map. What part of the buildings do you see in the photo? What part of the trees do you see in the photo? Here is a picture of a part the park in Nikki s Adventure as seen from overhead. Do you see the same parts of the buildings and trees in the MAP CENTER air photo that you see in the overhead view of the park in Nikki s Adventure?
