What is a Biome? A biome is a large region characterized by a specific climate, as well as specific plant and animal communities Climate Climate = weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, humidity, winds, etc). Climate Most organisms are adapted to live within a certain range of temperatures and will not survive at temperatures too far outside of that range 4%
Tropical Rainforest Biome Rainforest Biome Located on a belt around the earth near the equator The tropical forest covers about 7% of Earth s surface Rainforests have high biodiversity (many different species exist here). Climate Rainforest Biome: Climate Tropical rainforests are always humid and warm Receives about 200-650 cm of rain a year 5%
Climate Because they are located around the equator, rainforests receive strong sunlight and maintain a relatively constant temperature year round Rainforest Biome: Facts Facts Tropical rainforests grow on top of very poor soil; most nutrients are found in the plants Facts Some fungi actually live directly on the tree to transfer the nutrients from the decaying matter directly to the tree Facts Many trees have above ground roots to provide support in the thin soil Rainforest Biome: Layers 6%
Which layer gets the most sunlight? The least? Emergent layer = tallest layer - these trees grow far above the other trees. Canopy = dense layer of trees that absorbs almost 95% of sunlight 7%
Epiphytes, such as orchids, are specialized plants that live on the surface of trees instead of the ground They can live high up in the canopy to get sunlight for photosynthesis They can also absorb water and nutrients that trickle down Most animals that live in the rainforest live in the canopy because they depend on plants like epiphytes for survival (for their flowers and fruits) Understory = Very little sunlight reaches this layer Plants are shorter with large, flat leaves to absorb as much sunlight as possible Many insects live in this layer Forest Floor = Extremely dark, bottom layer. Very few plants can live here. Decay occurs quickly due to lack of sunlight Ex/ a leaf that might take a year to decompose normally will decompose in 6 weeks here. Rainforest Biome: Animal Adaptations 8%
Species Adaptations and Diversity Most rain forest animals are specialists Ex/ The giant anteater has a long tongue to reach hidden insects Species Adaptations and Diversity Ex/ The great hornbill uses its strong curved beak to crack open nutshells Species Adaptations and Diversity Ex/ Costa Rican hooded praying mantis uses camouflage to avoid predators Rainforest Biome: Human Impacts Human Impacts Every 60 seconds nearly 150 acres of tropical rainforest are cleared due to logging operations, agriculture, cattle ranching, or oil exploration This habitat destruction can lead to the extinction of species Pair-Share-Respond 1. Where do you find most tropical rainforests? 2. Describe the general climate of a tropical rainforest 3. Identify the four layers of a tropical rainforest 4. What are epiphytes and where do you find them? 5. Identify one way a plant or animal is adapted to living in a tropical rainforest 9%
