How to use this study with your child There are 3 parts to this study: *a copywork/drawing page *an activity page *a lapbook portion in the back Copywork/drawing page At the top of each copywork/drawing page, there is a box with a weather related sentence inside. It tells your child what to draw. Next, there is a short paragraph to read to your child or that your child can read. Last, there is a sentence that your child reads and then copies on the provided lines in his/her best handwriting. Sample Lesson Draw a picture of a water cycle. What is a Water Cycle? The water that we have here on earth is in limited quality. The water moves from the ocean to the air to the land and back again. The endless movement of water in nature is called the water cycle. You can break the cycle down into four main parts; evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection. Nature uses its sources over and over again. The water changes from liquid to a gas or a solid. Activity Page After each major weather topic, there is a fun activity for your child to do that will further his/her understanding of the that weather concept. Match the letter to the picture Sample Lesson A.-Condensation B.-Evaporation C.-Collection D.-Precipitation Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 4

Things to Know Hamburger Fold-Fold horizontally Hotdog Fold-Fold vertically Dotted Lines-These are the cutting lines. Accordion Fold-This fold is like making a paper fan. Fold on the first line so that title is on top. Turn over and fold on next line so that title is on top again. Turn over again and fold again on the next line so that title is on top. Continue until all folds are done. Cover Labels-Most of the booklets that are folded look nicer with a label on top instead of just a blank space. They will be referred to as cover label. Folder 1 How do I know where to place each template in the folder? This placement key tells you the template goes in the first folder at the top of the left flap. Gather the number of folders required for the project. Fold them flat as seen here. For each folder, fold the left and right sides inward toward the original line to create two flaps. Crease so that the highest part of each flap is touching the original line. It is important not to let the two flaps overlap. You may want to take a ruler and run it down each crease to make it sharper. Folding a Lapbook Base Original fold line Highest part of flap. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 5

Draw a picture of Stratus clouds. What are Stratus clouds? Stratus clouds are entirely gray in color. They usually cover the entire sky. They look like fog up in the sky. Sometimes you will feel drops of rain falling from them. Stratus clouds cover the entire sky. They look like gray fog up in the sky. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 13

Draw a picture of Cumulus clouds. What are Cumulus Clouds? Cumulus clouds look like pieces of white puffy cotton. They are called fair-weather clouds. The bottom of these clouds are flat and the tops are round. Cumulus clouds are called fair-weather clouds. They look like pieces of cotton in the sky. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 14

Draw a picture of nimbus clouds What are Nimbus Clouds? Nimbus means rain, so nimbus clouds are full of rain or snow. They are very dark gray in color. When you see nimbus clouds, it is best to go inside. Nimbus clouds are full of rain or snow. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 15

Draw a picture of a tornado. What is a Tornado? A tornado is a storm the turns in a fast circle. The circle stretches from the sky all the way down to the ground. The wind speeds of a tornado can go as fast as 300 mph. Tornados can destroy houses, throw cars, and uproot large trees. Every year, there are around 1000 tornadoes in the United States. A tornado is a storm that turns in a fast circle. The circle stretches from the sky to the ground. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 26

Let s Make a Tornado! Would you like to see a tornado up close? All that you need are two 2-liter coke bottles, a circle cut from a piece of cardboard and some tape. First fill one of the bottles ¾ full with water. Then you need to cut a circle out of the cardboard the same size as the bottle s opening. Cut a ¼ hole in the center of that circle. Now, place the circle on top you re the water bottle. Place the other bottle on top and tape the two bottles together. Make sure that the bottle with the water in it is on the top. Begin to slowly move the top bottle in a circle. You will be able to see a tornado forming! Tornado in a Jar Take a large glass jar like a pickle jar. Remove all of the labels. Fill the jar 2/3 full with water. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the water. Drop in one teaspoon of liquid soap and a teaspoon of vinegar. Screw on the top and give the jar a really good hard shake. Turn the jar in a quick spin and set down. Inside the jar you should begin to see a vortex begin to form. If you look closely, you should be able to see the inside of what a tornado looks like. Copyright 2009,2013 A Journey Through Learning 27
