MVCA Mission O The mission of the Michigan Virtual Charter Academy is to provide an innovative, intensive academic preparation that inspires and educates students to achieve the highest levels of academic knowledge and skills. Michigan Virtual Charter Academy embraces a collaborative partnership between teachers and parents in order to empower students to reach extraordinary heights. Extraordinary results require extraordinary efforts! Through commitment hard work, consistency, and responsibility, every student will meet the challenge of mastering high expectations.

Objectives O Students will be able to O Explain how reactants enter into chemical reactions that results in products. O Recognize that chemical reactions may involve the formation of a precipitate, the generation of a gas, or a change in color. O Explain the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reaction.

Beautiful Chemistry O Click on the video link below and watch the video. O http://vimeo.com/107976057 O I will call you back after 2 minutes O What did you like from the video?

What do you think a chemical reaction is?

Chemical Reactions O Chemical reaction: the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances. O The process of breaking and forming bonds.

Parts of a Chemical Reaction O Reactants: the starting molecules in a chemical reaction. O Substances that react together O Products: the molecules that result from a chemical reaction. O What is produced in the reaction C 3 H 8 + 5O 2 3CO 2 + 4H 2 O Reactants Products What type of change took place? The chemical reaction produced new compounds (products) with different properties than the compounds in the reactants!

Chemical Reactions Exothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction in which energy (heat) is released. *Hint-Think of the word Exit. Endothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction that requires energy (heat is absorbed). *Hint-Think of the word Enter. Exo means go out or exit Thermic means heat or energy Temperature goes UP during a chemical reaction! Endo means go in Thermic means heat or energy Temperature goes DOWN during a chemical reaction! Example: Example: 2Na + Cl 2 2NaCl + ENERGY 2H 2 O + ENERGY 2H 2 + O 2

Which chemical reaction is it? O Click on the link below to watch a video. O http://safeshare.tv/w/xxkmuxhegx O Think about what type of reaction it is and how do you know it is a chemical reaction taking place. O Give me a green check when you are finished watching the movie!

What did you observe?

Combustion O Combustion Reaction: an exothermic reaction in which oxides are usually formed. O We get energy from fuels as the result of combustion reactions. What happens to the temperature during a combustion reaction? A.) Temperature increases B.) Temperature decreases Use Polling Tools! A combustion reaction is an exothermic reaction. Is energy A.) Absorbed B.) Released

Decomposition Reaction O Decomposition reaction: a kind of chemical reaction in which a single compound is broken down into two or more simpler compounds. O Example: O H 2 O + ENERGY H 2 + O 2

Hint: Look for a NEW substance being produced to identify if it is a chemical reaction. Solid Formation (precipitate) *Precipitate: is a solid substance produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution. Signs of Chemical Reactions Color Change Gas Formation (gas/bubbles)

Activity Time! O Get ready to use your observational skills! O Click on the video link below: O http://safeshare.tv/w/gdrvcqngeh O Make some observations and be ready to share when we return. O Give me a green check when you are finished watching the movie

What did you observe?

When you open a pop it might fizz. Is that an example of a chemical reaction taking place? Why or why not?

Here are some of the fun activities: Chat room Whiteboard room Word Searches Checkers Sudoku Puzzles Tic Tac Toe Web Cam How can you be invited? Complete 10 questions in all 4 of your Science topics in Study Island by October 30 th (4pm).

Exit Ticket! O Click on the link below and answer the questions. Remember to try your best! This gives us a quick snapshot of how you are doing with the lessons taught today It also is how I am taking attendance! O https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1myzns9uw1s5ug 5yUp-0wxKGF3DFwT- HDI_iJwU_GmQ0/viewform?usp=send_form O When you are finished submitting the Exit Ticket, you may leave class Go and take Unit 3 Lesson 2 Chemical Reactions assessment in the OLS. Have a wonderful day! O If you have questions raise your hand!
