He who has ears, let him hear THE WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of an ear or mouth. Let this stamp (or sticker) of an ear (or mouth) help you remember Jesus healed a man s ears and tongue. Today s Whisper Verse is He who has ears, let him hear. Teach the Whisper Verse in spoken language and in sign language below. We call it the Whisper Verse so you can whisper it to others.* SIGN LANGUAGE: He who has ears, let him hear. (For visual demonstrations, see www.signingsavvy.com.) Each time we say today s Whisper Verse, let s say it with four hand motions: He Point to the side as if towards a person. (who has) ears, Forefinger and thumb pinch ear. (let) him hear. Point to the side as if towards a person. Use index finger to tap the side of the ear twice. Allow children to enjoy free play until everyone has arrived. Let s sing the Clean Up Song as we put toys away before Praise Time. Praise any child who helps. Allow several minutes for clean up. Clean Up Song : Clean up! Clean up! Everybody, everywhere! Clean up! Clean up! Everybody do your share! Gather and seat children in Praise Time area. *Today s Whisper Verse: He who has ears, let him hear, Matthew 11:15. The Whisper Verse is a tool to help the children learn a major point in the lesson. It is coupled with sign language or hand motions as a memory aid. The verse is not necessarily chosen from today s Bible story. Page 3 of 10

Jesus as the God of Healing THE WORSHIP Teacher Tip: To help the children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play It s Praise Time! as children move to that designated area. It s Praise Time our time to sing praise to Jesus as the God of Healing. To heal is to make well. In today s story, Jesus healed the ears and tongue of a man who could not hear or speak. That reminds me of today s Whisper Verse, He who has ears, let him hear. Let s try it together. Review the Whisper Verse: He who has ears, let him hear. Include sign language. Jesus has ears, too. He hears everything we say. He hears us when we pray. He hears us when we sing to Him. Let s sing a prayer to Him as the one who heals us. Jesus is the one we praise. Sing: Heal Me, O Lord. God gave us our ears. They help us hear the stories about Him. God gave us our tongues to help our mouths speak, so we can tell everyone about the miracles of Jesus. Sing: I Will Remember. Let s thank Him now for all He has given us as we give our offering to His church. Sing: Give Thanks to the Lord while collecting the offering. I know someone with great big ears to hear! It s Delbert! Let s see if Delbert and Lello know about Jesus and the man who could not hear or speak. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: God of Wonders Unit 2, Lesson 9. Jesus helps us hear and speak. He wants to hear us use our tongues and voices to praise Him. Let s use our ears to hear each other sing, and our voices to sing loud praises to Jesus. Sing: Let Everything That Has Breath. Page 4 of 10

Jesus healed the man s ears and tongue THE WORD Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; My mouth quiet as can be, I will listen to hear, How God loves you and me. Point to eyes. Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. Cup hand around ear. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Last time, we learned Jesus healed the sick woman. Today, we will hear how Jesus healed a man who could not hear or speak. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Mark 7:35. WATCH THE WORD: MARK 7:32-37 Read the points below or retell the passage in your own words using the points below as a general guide. To illustrate the story, display the Healed Man Puppet craft sample. Other visual options include Color This Story or any related picture. There was a man who could not speak And his ears - they could not hear. Friends brought him and begged the Lord To heal the man s tongue and ears. Jesus took him away from the crowd And put His fingers in the man s ears. He touched the man s tongue and looked up; He said, Be opened! to the ears. The man's ears opened - he could hear! And he spoke clearly as can be! Everyone heard and spoke about this, For now he could hear and speak! What happened when Jesus touched the man s ears and said, Be opened!? (The man could hear and talk.) Let s find our answer in the Bible. Read Mark 7:35 from the teacher s Bible. With our ears we hear the truth of the Bible stories. What does Jesus say about hearing the truth? (We need to hear it.) Our Whisper Verse tells us the answer. Let s say it together: He who has ears, let him hear. Include sign language or hand motions. Page 5 of 10

We can listen and tell others about Jesus THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: HEALED MAN PUPPET Purpose: To remind the children Jesus healed the man who could not hear or speak. Supplies: Small paper plate, sturdy skin-colored paper, glue, crayons or markers, optional: use wiggle eyes or eye stickers and/or yarn for hair Prepare: Punch a hole in the center lower third of each plate (large enough for a child s finger). Cut 2 ears out of flesh-colored paper (approx. 2-inch x 1-inch ovals). On the front or back plate rim, print: Jesus Healed the Man s Ears and Tongue Mark 7:32-37 Directions: 1. Draw the healed man s nose and eyes above the hole for his mouth. 2. Draw the man s hair. 3. Glue an ear onto each side of the man s head. 4. Put your finger through the mouth hole to be the man s tongue. Craft Discussion: What do our ears help us do? (Hear.) God gave us ears for hearing. Let s say it with our motions right now! Say Whisper Verse together with hand motions: He who has ears, let him hear. How would it feel to hear no sounds at all? (Children respond.) Why would that be hard? (Children respond.) How would it feel to be able to suddenly hear and speak and sing? (Children respond.) What is the most exciting Bible story you have ever heard with your ears? (Children respond.) What is the most important thing you have told others about Jesus? (Children respond.) Page 6 of 10

THE WAY continued GAME: JESUS HEALED THE MAN S EARS AND TONGUE Purpose: For children to experience the story from the perspective of the man who was healed. Supplies: Healed Man Puppet crafts, Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse song, CD player Imagine what it would be like if you could not hear any sounds. Ask the children to talk making no sound. What do you hear? Is it easy to understand what is being said? (No.) What are some ways we can talk to each other when we cannot hear? (We can use sign language, just like we do for our Whisper Verse each week.) Using your Healed Man Puppet crafts, let s have a puppet show of the story of Jesus healing the man s ears and tongue. Teacher: There once was a man who could not hear or speak. Children: Silently hold up their Healed Man Puppets, keeping the tongues [fingers] very still. Teacher: Silently and visibly count to ten on your fingers. Then Jesus said, Be opened! At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. Let s say our Whisper Verse together and sing our Bible Memory Verse. Teacher and Children: He who has ears, let him hear. Wiggle healed man s tongue and sing or chant the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse. Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the One I praise. GAME: HOLD YOUR TONGUE Purpose: For children to experience the frustrations of being mute. Supplies: None Imagine what it would be like if you could not speak. Why would that be hard for you? (Children respond.) Did you know your tongue helps you talk? Your ears, your tongue, and your voice work together to help you make sounds. Directions: 1. Children sit in a circle. 2. When it is your turn, you will hold your tongue and tell us the name of your favorite song. Everyone else will listen with their ears and try to understand you. 3. While holding his or her tongue, the first child says their name and favorite song. 4. Remaining children raise their hands to guess the correct song title. 5. After the children guess, the first child releases their tongue and clearly pronounces the song title. 6. Continue playing until each child has a turn. Page 7 of 10

THE WAY continued SNACK: LOTS OF NOISE SNACK Purpose: Children will eat a crunchy snack while discussing sounds and listening. Snack Suggestion: Crunchy snack (e.g., apples, celery, carrots, potato chips) Directions: 1. Serve snack and drink. 2. Let s sing the Blessing Song. Sing to the tune of Frere Jacques or other familiar tune. God our Father, God our Father. Once again, once again. Thank You for our blessings. Thank You for our blessings. Amen. Amen. 3. Lead discussion below while children enjoy their snack. Who remembers our Whisper Verse? Choose a child to demonstrate the motions to the Whisper Verse: He who has ears, let him hear. Ask the children to explain ways someone who cannot hear or speak might use to speak with us, such as sign language or lip reading. Shhhhhhhhh. As we eat our snack, listen very carefully. What do you hear? Crunching, chewing, and swallowing noises. Listen to the many sounds as we eat our snack. What favorite sound do you like to hear? Ask children to imitate those sounds. The Bible said the man could hardly talk because of his tongue. People could not understand him. How did it feel when you held your tongue and no one understood you? (Children respond.) CIRCLE OF PRAYER God made you and He cares for you. He loves to hear you pray with private words or words you say out loud. Let s fold our hands and close our eyes. As I lift up your name to God in heaven, I will lay my hand on your shoulder. Let s pray together. Dear God, thank You for making us and loving us. We lift up to You a special prayer for,, (read every name). We pray for our families and friends. Thank You for teaching us how to love one another. Amen. When only 5 minutes remain, begin this segment. FINAL FIVE MINUTES COMPLETED CRAFT: Take home your Healed Man Puppet craft. Use it to tell someone the story of Jesus healing the man who could not hear or speak clearly. PONDER, PRAY & PLAY: Distribute Ponder, Pray & Play cards if available. Show this card to your family. Think about ways you can use your ears to hear about God and your tongue to speak to others about His miracles. COLOR THIS STORY: Jesus Healed the Man s Ears and Tongue.
