Cheryl Maxson, Associate Professor 2010-present Developing Effective Gang Strategies For California s Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Worked with the team to develop the youth survey instrument and the staff survey instrument for a study funded by California s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Conducted interviews with incarcerated youth for this project covering state-level youth correctional facilities in California. Assisted with the entry, cleaning and analysis of official and self-reported data for presentations and reports. Helped provide DJJ with policy recommendations on gang membership and violence. George Tita, Associate Professor 2008-2010 Inferring Structure and Forecasting Dynamics on Evolving Networks Assisted with a large-scale research study funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DOD), and Multiple University Research Initiative (MURI). Collected homicide and gang Field Interview (FI) data in-house at the Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Policing Area. Involved in the cleaning, coding and analysis of data for reports, creation of maps, presentations and scholarly articles. Co-Principal Investigator: P. Jeffrey Brantingham, Ph.D (UCLA Anthropology) The Urban Institute 2005-2009 Alcohol Availability, Distribution Policies and their Relationship to Crime Collected and analyzed geospatial data with ArcMap and GeoDa. Designed survey instrument to collect information on single sales practices of alcohol-selling establishments. District of Columbia Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Created maps and analyzed data for PSN executive and planning meetings, for members of Major Narcotics, Violent Crimes, and the Gang Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department. Utilized advanced statistical procedures, including ARIMA and logistical and spatial regressions, to evaluate outcomes of the PSN intervention. Worked with multiple local and federal agencies to create a targeted gang intervention plan. Cost Effectiveness Evaluation of Collecting DNA in High-Volume Crimes Actively participated in the creation and implementation of the project database. Managed three on-site project coordinators. Analyzed monthly data to inform sites of progress and areas of concern.
