T T September/October 2014 Volume 3 Issue 5 Many stories for children include magic sometimes it s a magical person, an enchanted item, or a magic spell. This issue of Topical Tidbits explores some of the more well-known stories. Maybe you have even read a few of them The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, and quite a few others. If you haven t read them, they should be easy to find at your local library. A lot of the books mentioned in this issue have also been made into movies. Some countries have issued stamps based on the screen versions. It might be fun to try to collect a book version and a film version of your favorite stories! Be sure to enter the contest on page 7. Entries are due by October 31, 2014. 1

The Perforated Press Match each person with the magical item that belongs to him or her. Answers are on page 6. 1. My magic shoes were silver in the book, not red like in the movie. 2. The Lady in the Lake gave me the magical sword, Excalibur. 3. A magic glass slipper helped me find a handsome prince. 4. I used an invisibility cloak at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. 5. Lovely, wonderful thoughts and a bit of fairy dust help children fly in my story. A. Aladdin B. Alice C. Harry Potter D. King Arthur E. Dorothy Gale 6. An enchanted wardrobe transported my siblings and me to a land called Narnia. 7. I ate a magic piece of cake in Wonderland that caused me to grow larger. F. Cinderella G. Bilbo Baggins 8. I rubbed a magic lantern that contained a genie. 9. I m a hobbit who found a magic ring that made me invisible. 10. Every time I told a lie, magic would make my nose grow longer. H. Lucy I. Peter Pan J. Pinocchio 2

The Perforated Press Use what you know about these fairy tales to fill in the chart. Title Good Characters Bad Characters Setting Magical Elements Snow White Sleeping Beauty Rumpelstiltskin 3

Sometimes a book may include a map of the imaginary land where the story takes place. You might have seen a map of Narnia where the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe takes place, or a map of Neverland from Peter Pan. Frank L. Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz books, divided his Marvelous Land of Oz into five countries-the Emerald City was in the middle, surrounded by the Munchkin Country, the Gillikin Country, the Winkie Country, and the Quadling Country. Now, it s your turn! Design a magical land of your own, or take an imaginary place you have read about and make a map of it. Be sure to label and color it. This stamp is a map of the lands mentioned in J.R.R.Tolkien s The Lord of the Rings. The Perforated Press 4

The Perforated Press The Harry Potter books have been a hit with young readers since their debut in 1997. Over 400 million copies have been sold worldwide and have been translated into 68 languages. In the books, Harry and his friends attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where they have many magical adventures. In 2013, the United States Postal Service issued a set of Harry Potter stamps. Hidden on seven of the stamps are tiny words called micro printing. These can be seen using a magnifying glass. The words form a sentence when put together. The secret word on this stamp is YOU. There are many magical items in the Harry Potter series. See how many you can find in the puzzle below. The Perforated Press Q: What did the prince say after the witch turned him into a frog? A: Ribbit! Ribbit! Sign outside a witch s store: Witch s parking only! All others will be toad! The Nutcracker and the Mouse King was originally written in 1816 by E. T. A. Hoffmann. In the story, a young girl receives a nutcracker that comes to life. After defeating the evil Mouse King, they visit a magical kingdom. In 1892, the Russian composer Tchaikovsky turned the story into a ballet which became his most famous composition, and perhaps the most popular ballet in the world. Perhaps you have seen it! The USPS issued some stamps with magic images. In order to see these, you must have a Stamp Decoder. Although these are no longer sold by the USPS, they can still be found on ebay. For more information about these special stamps, visit: www.hiddenimagestamps.info. The Stamp Decoder is a small piece of clear plastic that reveals hidden images on some U.S. stamps.
