Geography Curriculum Overview 2016-2017 Suggest one topic a year for each year group based on another city/country or possible local. Suggested ideas for some year groups have been put in as they will allow for coverage of most objectives in one topic. Year 1 Year 2 Suggested Geographical study- Our local area Observe and record in fieldwork Remember what was seen in field work Use digital camera Draw pictures to communicate Label things seen in field work Collect simple stats Fill in class weather Use simple maps Make simple plans and talk about them Mark location of school on map Make a map of things seen on school visit. Describe places using words and picture Talk about places seen in books videos and internet Describe buildings Use simple vocabulary eg. House, street, wood Understand the concept of close and far away. Suggested Geographical study- Our British Isles Ask simple geographical questions Take and use digital photos Make detailed sketches of a location Draw labelled diagrams to show study Identify buildings and land use through aerial photographs. Use vocabulary of size to classify- hamlet, town, city. Discuss changes in weather and seasons from chart. Use tally charts and simple tables. Identify features on a map Know the main aspects of the british isles using maps

Year 3 Draw simple maps and plans Mark own locations on map of uk. Idenitfy main regions of the world- continents, equator, tropics Begin to use concepts of NSEW. Describe physical and human features of places. Know places are linked by paths or roads. Recognise characteristic features of places Sort features of a place into groups Use vocabulary to describe, built up, noisy busy Identify parts of some physical features e.g coast Understand similarities between places. Begin to compare own locality with others. Express views about local area and environment. Use specific geographical vocabulary: Town, region. Find out about unknown places using prediction and prior knowledge Use a combination of observation and research Use a range of primary and secondary resources Use the internet to help find out more about an area use goole earth Present findings in a graph and in writing Suggest own ways of presenting information Make detailed field sketches Make field measurements over time Devise a questionnaire to find out local opinions use a range of information and apply it in different ways Collect stats Collect temperature and rainfall using a range of instruments Use a range of measurements locally and from the internet to discuss weather and climate. Begin to use the computer to draw graphs Draw maps and sketches of local places Use and draw maps with a simple key Use maps with simple grid references Work out routes on maps and plans Find longest and shortest routes using maps Plan routes using 4 points of the compass

Compare atlases with a globe Use atlases which show physical and human features Use contents and index pages in atlas. Use information from buildings to work out location Understand similarities and differences between places Understand physical and human features Understand different use of places Economic development Part of a river and land use around it. Summarise environmental issues Describe how places change Express how people effect the environment. Recognise how people effect the environment How weather changes an environment Know difference between weather and climate Suggest ways of improving local environment Suggest ways towards reduction of climate change. Year 4 Suggested Geographical study- Rainforest and its people ( deforestation) Use aerial photographs to identify pattern Examine, question and analyse using a range of evidence Prepare questionnaires to investigate people s views on environmental issues. Read and use symbols on an os map Use four figure grid references to locate points on a map Identify time differences around the world Plan a route and work out distance using map scales. Understand why people chose to live in contrasting areas Begin to recognise and describe geographical patterns Consider the future of some physical and human features, based on understanding Understand how people can both improve and damage environment. Compare lives of people in two different environments. Offer explanations for some features

Explain views people hold on environmental change and environmental issues. Show how people with different viewpoints support their own arguments Explain the process of erosion and deposition and its effects on people. Test conclusions Measure wind speed, rainfall and noise levels Make good use of ICT in charts and graphs Use database to find out information Make database to record information Year 5 Year 6 Very child lead- Children pick locality and questions they would like to answer? Suggest suitable questions for study Rank information in order of importance Use information accurately to come to conclusions Use careful measurement of rainfall, noise level and distance Collect statistics about people and plac3es Begin to use a range of graphs, including pie charts Set up database from fieldwork or research Use knowledge of time zones to work out journey time Use and understand simple scale Begin to understand geographical pattern e.g industry by river Describe and begin to explain patterns and processes Describe how processes can lead to similarities between different places. Justify own view point or decision using information Adapt own view point. Suggest relevant issues for further study Select information sources of evidence Collect stats about people and places Analyse population data using similarities and differences Suggest conclusion Use 6 figure grid reference

Use a compass to follow a route Speculate and hypothesises Suggest how human activity can cause change to environment and to the different views people hold Evaluate across a range of geographical concepts and ideas Recognise dependent links and relationships Construct plausible and convincing arguments for change, interpreting their viewpoints.
