Faithful Tropicalization of the Grassmannian of planes Annette Werner (joint with Maria Angelica Cueto and Mathias Häbich) Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main 2013 1 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Motivation Goal: The Grassmannian of planes is faithfully tropicalized by the Plücker embedding, i.e. the tropical Grassmannian of planes is homeomorphic to a closed subject of the Berkovich analytic Grassmannian. Motivation: Faithful tropicalization results for curves by Baker, Payne and Rabinoff. 2 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Setting K non-archimedean complete field with respect to K. Example: Q p, finite extensions of Q p, C p, Laurent series or Puiseux series, any field with the trivial valuation. X /K variety X an Berkovich analytic space. If X = Spec A affine, then X an = { multiplicative seminorms A R 0 extending K } equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence. Note: Every K rational point a X (K) induces a point in X an by A R 0, f f (a) K. 3 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Example: Berkovich affine line Let X = A 1 K = SpecK[x] and assume K algebraically closed. Put D(a, r) = {x K : x a r} K = A 1 K (K). Then X an consists of the following points (seminorms): Let f K[x]. Points of type 1: Points of type 2: f a,r = sup x D(a,r) f a = f (a) for a K = A 1 K (K). f (x) for a disc D(a, r) with r K x Points of type 3: f a,r = sup x D(a,r) f (x) for a disc D(a, r) with r / K x Points of type 4: f a,r = lim n D(a 1, r 1 ) D(a 2, r 2 )... of discs. f an,r n for a nested sequence 4 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Example: Berkovich affine line The topological space (A 1 K )an can be identified with an R-tree which has infinitely many branches growing out of every point contained in a dense subset of any line segment. Branching occurs at points of type 2. The leaves of the tree are type 1 or type 4 points. In order to get the (compact) Berkovich projective line (P 1 K )an it suffices to add one leaf of type 1. 5 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Berkovich curves (by Till Wagner) Tate curve Genus two curve 6 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Berkovich spaces in higher dimensions! The description of Berkovich curves as R trees relies on the fact that K[x] is a factorial ring. In dimension 2, there is no explicit description of the points in Berkovich spaces. 7 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Tropicalization Trop: (G r m) an R r γ ( log γ(x 1 ),..., log γ(x r ) ) X 0 X very affine, i.e. closed embedding ϕ : X 0 G r m. Associated tropicalization: trop: X an 0 ϕ an (G r an Trop m) R r. More generally: R = R { }, 1 = (1,..., 1) Trop: (P r K )an ( R r+1 \{ 1} ) R1 = TP r γ ( log γ(x o ),..., log γ(x r ) ) + R1 ϕ : X P r K gives rise to tropicalization: trop : X an (P r K )an TP r 8 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Results on curves by Baker-Payne-Rabinoff Assume that dim X = 1 and K non-trivial. Theorem ([BPR]) For every finite subgraph Γ of X an {leaves} there exists a tropicalization mapping Γ isometrically to its image. Theorem ([BPR]) If Γ Trop(X 0 ) for some very affine X 0 X is a finite subgraph with tropical multiplicity one everywhere, there exists a subgraph Γ X an mapping isometrically to Γ under trop. 9 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Higher dimensions Higher-dimensional varieties? In higher dimensions, there is no polyhedral description of Berkovich spaces generalizing the R tree structure of analytic curves. in general there are no semistable models (which play an important role in [BPR]). Example: metrics have to be replaced with piecewise linear structures. Grassmannian 10 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Grassmannian Gr(d, n) Grassmannian of d dimensional subspaces of an n dimensional vector space. Plücker embedding Tropical Grassmannian: ϕ : Gr(d, n) P (n d) 1 K ω d ω ϕan an trop : Gr(d, n) (P (n d) 1 ) T Gr(d, n) =Image (trop). K an Trop TP r 11 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Tropical Grassmannian Gr 0 (d, n) = ϕ 1 (G (n d) m /G m ) T Gr 0 (d, n) = Image ( ) trop Gr0 (d,n) T Gr 0 (d, n) is the tropical Grassmannian G d,n Speyer and Sturmfels 2004. investigated by Theorem (Speyer-Sturmfels) T Gr 0 (d, n) is a fan of dimension d(n d). It contains a lineality space of dimension n 1. Theorem (Speyer-Sturmfels) T Gr 0 (2, n) is the space of phylogenetic trees. 12 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Tropical Grassmannian From now on: d = 2 Plücker coordinates on P (n 2) 1 K : p ij for all {i, j} {1,..., n}; i j. Plücker relations p ij p kl = p ik p jl p il p jk for i, j, k, l pairwise distinct. 13 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Phylogenetic trees A phylogenetic tree on n leaves is a tree T whose leaves are labelled 1, 2,..., n, which is endowed with a weight function ω : edges (T ) R. For every phylogenetic tree (T, ω) and all i, j {1,..., n} let x ij = sum of weights along the path from i to j. 14 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Phylogenetic trees Then x ij satisfy the tropical Plücker relation: For all pairwise distinct i, j, k, l {1,..., n} the maximum among is attained at least twice. x ij + x kl, x ik + x jl, x il + x jk Hence (x ij ) ij is a point in the tropical Grassmannian T Gr 0 (2, n). 15 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Main result Theorem (Cueto, Häbich, Werner 2013) There exists a continuous section σ : T Gr(2, n) Gr(2, n) an of the tropicalization map. Hence the tropical Grassmannian of planes is homeomorphic to a closed subset of the Berkovich analytic Grassmannian. Motivation: T Gr 0 (2, n) has tropical multiplicity one everywhere by Speyer/Sturmfels. On compact subsets of tropical curves this implies existence of a section by [BPR]. 16 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof First idea Fix i j. U = ϕ 1 {p ij 0} big cell. Write u kl = p kl p ij for the affine cordinates on {p ij 0}. Then U A 2(n 2) K with respect to (u ik, u jk ) k i,j. 17 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof Skeleton map R 2(n 2) (A 2(n 2) K ) an r = (r 1,..., r 2(n 2) ) γ r, γ r ( I a I u I ) = max{ a I exp( r, I )} ( ) γr is a norm on the polynomial ring, u = (u ik u jk ) k i,j. In particular, writing r = (r ik, r jk ) k i,j, γ r (u kl ) = max{exp(r ik + r jl ), exp(r jk + r il )} = exp(max{r ik + r jl, r jk + r il }). I 18 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof This provides a section of trop: Gr(2, n) an T Gr(2, n) on all x T Gr(2, n) satisfying x kl + x ij = max{x ik + x jl, x jk + x il }. Ok, if x comes from a phylogenetic caterpillar tree Hence this proves our claim for n = 4. Not ok, if x comes from a tree of the form 19 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof In general, the definition of our section depends 1 on the combinatorial type of the phylogenetic tree 2 on the position in the coordinate hyperplane arrangement in A 2(n 2) K. Strategy: T combinatorial n labelled tree. C T T Gr 0 (2, n) C T T Gr(2, n) set of points corresponding to (T, ω) for some weight function ω. closure. Note: T Gr(n, n) = T Gr 0 (2, n). 20 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof Σ Stratum in coordinate hyperplane arrangement in U A 2(n 2) K. Theorem Depending on Σ, U, T there exists a set I {u kl : k l} of cardinality 2(n 2) which generates the function field K(U), such that R 2(n 2) Spec K[I ]an Skeleton map is a section of trop over Σ an C T. rational Uan 21 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof: example Example: Σ = complement of all coordinate hyperplanes in U. Arrange T as with subtrees T 1,..., T r. Order the leaves of each T j such that the cherry property holds: For leaves k l m either {kl} or {lm} is a cherry in {i, k, l, m} (and similary for {k, l, m, j}). 22 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof: example Write s 1 s 2... s p for the leaves in T 1. Take variables on T 1. u is1, u is2,..., u isp, u js1, u s1 s 2,..., u sp 1 s p I = union of these sets of variables over all subtrees T 1,..., T r. 23 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

The proof: what remains to be done These local sections are independent of all choices and glue. Hence we get the desired section of the tropicalization map. σ : T Gr(2, n) Gr an (2, n) Technical lemma: show that σ is continuous. 24 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Shilov boundaries Proposition The section σ : T Gr(2, n) Gr(2, n) an associates to x the unique Shilov boundary point of the affinoid domain trop 1 ({x}) Gr(2, n) an. What does this mean? Assume σ(x) is contained in the analytification of the big cell U ij = Spec(R ij ) in the Grassmannian. Then σ(x) is a multiplicative seminorm on R ij extending the absolute value on K. For all other such multiplicative seminorms γ satisfying trop(γ) = x we have for all f R ij. γ(f ) σ(x)(f ) 25 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Tropical multiplicities Proposition For all x T Gr(2, n) the tropical multiplicity of x (in the ambient torus) is one. (For x T Gr 0 (2, n) this is due to Speyer/Sturmfels.) Proof: Use the local coordinate system I to calculate the initial degeneration. 26 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Algebraic consequence Corollary Let J be a subset of the Plücker coordinates not containing p ij. Then Gr J (2, n) = ϕ 1 {p kl = 0 p kl J} is an affine variety with coordinate ring K[u ±1 kl : u kl I \J] S, where S is the multiplicative subset generated by all u kl / J. 27 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013

Petersen graph Sturmfels: The spherical complex associated to the tropical Grassmannian T Gr 0 (2, 5) is the Petersen graph. Corollary Our section induces an embedding of the Petersen graph into the quotient (Gr 0 (2, 5)/G 5 m) an of the analytic very affine Grassmannian Gr 0 (2, 5) an. 28 / 28 Faithful Tropicalization 2013
