Aim What is the difference between mass and weight? How do you convert from mass to weight? How would the weight of an object change if it was taken to the moon? Keywords Mass Weight Gravity -

Starter If you went to the moon, would the forces on you be different to when you were on Earth? If so, how? And why?

The big picture Why can you jump higher on the moon?

What is gravity? Gravitational attraction All objects have a gravitational force that attracts other objects. But you only notice it when an object is very large. The gravitational force (gravity) of the Earth attracts us to Earth.

What would it be like on the largest planet in the solar system? Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It has a gravitational force that is 2.6 times as strong as Earth s. (It s very attractive!).

If you were a scientist.. What word would you use for the amount of force with which gravity pulls something towards the Earth? Scientists call it weight.

Mass and weight In Science: Mass is the amount of matter (stuff) that something is made of. It is measured in kilograms (kg) or grams (g). Weight is the amount of force with which gravity pulls something towards the Earth. It is measured in Newtons (N). If you went to the moon, which one would change and which would stay the same?

Mass and weight Mass Weight Definition How much of something there is A force due to gravity Units Kilograms, Kg Newtons, N Depends which planet you re on x

Mass and weight on different planets

How do we calculate an objects weight? The weight of an object depends on its mass and the gravitational field strength. It s calculated using the equation: weight = mass x gravitational field strength The units for these quantities are as follows: Weight is measured in Newtons (N). Mass is measured in kilograms (kg). Gravitational field strength is measured in Newtons per kilogram (N/kg). The gravitational field strength depends on the force of gravity. On Earth it is 10 N/kg, but it varies depending on planet size.

Calculating the weight of a car A car has a mass of 10,000 kg. Calculate the weight of the car. Use the gravitational field strength: 10 N/kg. weight = mass x gravitational field strength weight = 10,000 kg x 10 N/kg weight = 100,000 N

Practice 1. Mrs Smith has a mass of 60kg, what is her weight? 2. A bag of flour has a mass of 2 kg, what is its weight? 3. An apple has a mass of 100g, what is its weight? Answers 1. 600N 2. 20 N 3. 1N

Plenary: Plus/minus/interesting Think of 3 things that could happen - one plus - one minus and - one interesting If gravity on Earth was weaker.

True or False? Orbiting space craft are above the Earth s atmosphere and so are beyond the pull of gravity. The force from gravity is smaller at the top of Mount Everest than at the bottom. We get tides because the force of gravity from the moon moves water in the oceans.

Key words Mass The amount of matter an object has Weight the amount of force with which gravity pulls something towards bigger object Gravity Gravitational force of attraction between two objects. Gravitational force is everywhere, on Earth, on the moon, in vacuum
