A Banach space with a symmetric basis which is of weak cotype but not of cotype Peter G. Casazza Niels J. Nielsen Abstract We prove that the symmetric convexified Tsirelson space is of weak cotype but not of cotype. Introduction Weak type and weak cotype spaces were originally introduced and investigated by V.D. Milman and G. Pisier in [0] and weak Hilbert spaces by Pisier in [3]. A further detailed investigation can be found in Pisier s book [4]. The first example of a weak Hilbert space which is not isomorphic to a Hilbert space is the -convexified Tsirelson space (called the convexified Tsirelson space in this paper). This follows from the results of W.B. Johnson in [4]. For a detailed study of the original Tsirelson space we refer to [3]. Let X be a Banach space with a symmetric basis. It was proved in [4] that if X is a weak Hilbert space, then it is isomorphic to a Hilbert space and this has lead to the belief that if X is just of weak cotype, then it is of cotype. However, this turns out not necessarily to be the case. The main result of this paper states that the symmetric convexified Tsirelson space is of weak cotype but not of cotype. We now wish to discuss the arrangement of this paper in greater detail. In Section we give some basic facts on properties related to weak type and weak cotype while Section is devoted to a review of some results on the convexified Tsirelson space which we need for our main result. Most of these results are stated without proofs since they can be proved in a similar manner as the corresponding results for the original Tsirelson space. In Section 3 we make the construction of the symmetric convexified Tsirelson space, investigate its basic properties and prove our main result stated above. 0 000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 46B03, 46B07. Notation and Preliminaries In this paper we shall use the notation and terminology commonly used in Banach space theory as it appears in [8], [9] and [6]. B X shall always denote the closed unit ball of the Banach space X and if X and Y are Banach spaces, then B(X, Y ) (B(X) = B(X, X)) denotes the space of all bounded linear operators from X to Y. We let (g n ) denote a sequence of independent standard Gaussian variables on a fixed probability space (Ω, S, µ) and recall that a Banach space X is said to be of type p, p, (respectively cotype p, p < ) if there is a constant K so that for all finite sets {x, x,..., x n } X we have (respectively ( g j (t)x j p dµ(t) ) p K ( n x j p) p (.) A Banach space X is said to be of weak type if there is a constant C and a δ, 0 < δ <, so that whenever E X is a subspace, n N and T B(E, l n ), then there is an orthogonal projection P on l n of rank larger than δn and an operator S B(X, l n ) with Sx = P T x for all x E and S C T. Similarly X is called a weak cotype if there is a constant C and a δ, 0 < δ <, so that whenever E X is a finite dimensional subspace, then there is a subspace F E so that dim F δ dim E and d(f, l dim F ) C. Our definitions of weak type and weak cotype space are not the original ones, but are chosen out of the many equivalent characterizations given by Pisier [4]. A weak Hilbert space is a space which is both of weak type and weak cotype. If A is a set we let A denote the cardinality of A. Definition. If (x n ) and (y n ) are sequences in a Banach space X, we say that (x n ) is K- dominated by (y n ) if there is a constant K > 0 so that for all finitely non-zero sequences of scalars (a n ) we have a n x n K a n y n. n n The sequences (x n ) and (y n ) are K-equivalent if they K-dominate one another. We will need some information about property (H) and related properties. Definition. A Banach space X has property (H ) if there is a function C(, ) so that for every 0 < δ < and for every normalized λ-unconditional basic sequence (x i ) n i= in X there is a subset F N such that F δn and (x i ) i F is C(λ, δ)-equivalent to the unit vectors basis of l F. If we only have that (x i ) i F is C(λ, δ) dominated by the unit vector basis of l F, we say that X has property upper (H ). Similarly, we define property lower (H ). Definition.3 A Banach space X is said to have property (H) if there is a function f( ) so that for every normalized λ-unconditional basic sequence (x i ) n i= in X, we have f(λ) n/ x i f(λ)n /. Similarly, we can define property upper (H) and property lower (H). The following is clear. Proposition.4 Property upper (resp. lower) (H ) implies upper (resp. lower) (H). i= We will see later that the converses of Proposition.4 fail. The next result shows that any percentage of the basis will work in the definition of (H ). The proof follows from the argument of Pisier [4, Proposition.4, page 93]. 3

Lemma.5 For a Banach space X, the following are equivalent: () X has property upper (resp. lower) (H ). () There exists one 0 < δ < satisfying the conclusion of property upper (resp. lower) (H ). The corresponding result for property (H) is in [3, Proposition Ae, page 4]. Lemma.6 For a Banach space X, the following are equivalent: () X has property upper (resp. lower) (H). () There is a 0 < δ < so that for every λ-unconditional basic sequence (x i ) n i= in X there is a subset F {,,, n} with F δn and (x i ) i F has property upper (resp. lower) (H). The next theorem is due to Pisier [4, Proposition.4]. Proposition.7 Every weak Hilbert space has property (H ). We also have from Pisier [4, Proposition 0.8, page 60 and Proposition.9, page 74]: Proposition.8 The following implications hold for a Banach space X: () Weak cotype implies property lower (H). () Weak type implies property upper (H). The converses of Proposition.8 are open questions. However, for Banach lattices it is known that property (H), property (H ) and being a weak Hilbert space are all equivalent. This is a result of Nielsen and Tomczak-Jaegermann []. Convexified Tsirelson Space Since there is only a partial theory developed for the convexified Tsirelson space T, we will review what we need here. Notation. If E, F are sets of natural numbers, we write E < F if for every n E and every m F, n < m. If E = {k}, we just write k < F for E < F. Definition. Let (t n ) n= be the canonical unit vectors in R N. The convexified Tsirelson space T is (see [3]) the set of vectors x = n a nt n for which the recursively defined norm below is finite. Remark: It follows from Pisier [4, Chapter 3] ([3, Chapter ] for the original Tsirelson space) that there exists a norm satisfying (.) above. We will now list the known results for this space (which we will need) and where they can be found. Although many of the results we need have formally been proved for the original Tsirelson space T, using the fact that T is the -convexification of T we can easily carry these results over to T. The first result can be found in [3] and [4]. Proposition.3 The unit vectors (t n ) form a -unconditional basis for T. The space T is of type and weak cotype but does not contain a Hilbert space. Also, the unit vector basis (e n ) of l -dominates all subsequences of (t n ). That is, for x T, x T x l. Finally, if I {n, n +, n +, } with I n and x = n I a nt n then x l x T. We also need Lemma II., page 9 of [3]. This lemma is stated in [3] for the original Tsirelson space but the proof works the same in T. Proposition.4 Let y n = i I n a i t i (n =,, 3, ) be a normalized disjointly supported sequence in (t n ) and let p n = min I n. Then for every sequence of scalars (a n ) we have n a n t pn T n a n y n T. Next we need to see which subsequences of the unit vector basis of T are equivalent to the original basis. The next result is due to Bellenot []. He does this result in the original Tsirelson s space T, but the proof works perfectly well in T. Proposition.6 A subsequence (t kn ) of (t n ) is equivalent to (t n ) if and only if there is a natural number i so that k n g i (n), for all large n. Moreover, (t kn ) always -dominates (t n ) and there is a constant K so that the equivalence constant is K i for the case k n = g i (n). One important consequence is (see Pisier [4] or Casazza and Shura [3]). Proposition.7 For every natural number i, every g i (n)-dimensional subspace of span (t j ) jn is K i -isomorphic to a Hilbert space and K i -complemented in T. 5

If X is a weak Hilbert space with an unconditional basis, then it follows from [] that the conclusion of Proposition.7 remains true after a suitable permutation of the basis. The next result comes from [3, Theorem IV.b.3, page 39]. The theorem there is proved for the regular Tsirelson space but the techniques easily adapt to convexified space. Also, although the theorem is stated for distances between subspaces, the proof actually checks the equivalence constant of normalized disjointly supported sequences with n-elements in (t n ) and the unit vector basis of l n. So we state this form here. Proposition.8 Every n-dimensional subspace of T is K i log i (n) isomorphic to l n, for every i with log i (n). Moreover, every normalized disjointly supported sequence (x j ) n in T is K i log i (n)-equivalent to the unit vector basis of l n, and if the support of the x js lies in (t j ) j=n, then (x j ) n is -equivalent to the unit vector basis of l n. But there is a theory for the symmetric Tsirelson space. We will list the results we need on this topic. They can be found in Casazza and Shura [3, Chapter X.E]. Notation 3. For T or (T ) we will work with the non-decreasing rearrangement operator D. This result is a special case of results of Reisner [5]. Proposition VIII.a.8 of [3] states that the decreasing rearrangement operator D is a bounded non-linear operator on the original Tsirelson space T. This result then immediately carries over to the -convexification of T which is our convexified Tsirelson space T. By Proposition.9 we have that Theorem 3.4 holds in this case. (3.4) Note that our operator D does not satisfy a triangle inequality, but does with the constant K on the sum side of the triangle inequality. Definition 3.6 The symmetric convexified Tsirelson space is the Banach space S(T ) of vectors for which x S(T ) < with natural unit vector basis (t s n). By Theorem 3.4 this is a reflexive Banach space whose dual space is S[(T ) ]. It is known [3] that every infinite dimensional subspace of S(T )) contains a subspace which embeds into T. In particular S(T ) is a Banach space with a natural symmetric basis which has no subspaces isomorphic to c 0 or l p for p <. Also T embeds into S(T ). Since the unit vector basis of l uniformly dominates all block bases of (t n ) in T, it follows that the unit vector basis of S(T ) is also dominated by the unit vector basis of l. Proposition 3.7 The space S(T ) fails property upper (H) (even for disjointly supported elements) and fails property lower (H ). Hence S(T ) is not of weak type and not of cotype. Proof: First we check property lower (H ). Since (t s n) is symmetric and is dominated by the unit vector basis of l, it follows that if this family had subsets dominating the unit vector basis of l, then (t s n) would be equivalent to the unit vector basis of l which is impossible. Recall that the Maurey-Pisier Theorem (see e.g. [], page 85) states that if X is a Banach space then l px and l qx are finitely representable in X where and p X = sup {p X is of type p}, q X = inf {q X is of cotype q}. However, Proposition 3.9 implies that the only l p -space which is finitely representable in S(T ) is l. This gives the following result. Corollary 3.0 The space S(T ) is of type p for all p < and of cotype q for all < q. Before we go on, we need a criterion for a Banach space to be of weak cotype. We shall say that a Banach space X has property (P ) if there is a constant K so that whenever {x, x,..., x n } X is a finite set with max j n s j n s jx j for all (s j ) R, then n K ( g j (t)x j dµ(t) ) (3.5) It was proved by Pisier [4, Proposition 0.8] that if X is of weak cotype, then it has property (P ). It turns out that (P ) characterizes weak cotype spaces. This fact might be known to specialists but we shall give a short proof here:

Theorem 3. If X has property (P ), then it is of weak cotype. Proof: Let E X be a finite dimensional subspace, say dim(e) = n. Now, (3.7) and the right inequality of (3.6) allow us to use the well-known formulation of Dvoretzky s theorem (see e.g. [], Theorem 4., also [6], pages 5 and 8) to conclude that there is a universal constant η such that if k ηk C n, then there is a k-dimensinal subspace F [x j ] with d(f, l) k. From [4, Theorem 0.] it now follows that X is of weak cotype. We shall say that a sequence (x j ) n in a Banach space X is -separated if x i x j for all i, j n, i j. It follows immediately from Theorem 3. that if every -separated sequence in X satisfies (3.5), then X is of weak cotype. We are now ready to prove that the symmetric convexified Tsirelson space is a weak cotype space with a symmetric basis which is not of cotype. Hence its dual space is a symmetric space which is of weak type but fails to be of type. Theorem 3. The space S(T ) is a weak cotype space. Proof: Let (x j ) n be a -separated sequence in S(T ). Without loss of generality we may assume that for all i n we have x i S(T ). We wish to show that (3.5) holds.
