Tachymetre 7. Using the TCHYMTR scale The TCHYMTR dial is mainly used to compute an average speed after noting how long it takes to travel a fixed distance (like one mile or one kilometer), but it can also be used to compute many other things. The dial is a logarithmic scale that uses this formula to compute: TCHYMTR DIL = 3 / lapsed Time In econds The chronograph second hand indicates 1/, 1/, 1/2, 1,, or 1, etc. units (miles, objects, pounds etc.). hen stopped, the second hand points to the number on the TCHYMTR scale by which the number of units (1,, or 1, etc.) must be multiplied to obtain per-hour production rate or per-hour speed. XL UDRTR DMOLITIO TM TRT/TOP XL UDRTR DMOLITIO TM TRT/TOP FT DPTH 1 FT DPTH 1 3 3 2 3 2 3 xample o. 1 car covers one mile in 3 seconds. The second hand, stopped as the mile marker is passed, reads on the TCHYMTR scale. verage speed of the car is x 1, or miles per hour. lthough decimal units ( liters, 1 mile, kilometers) make computing simple, in practice, the TCHYMTR scale can be used to calculate velocities and production rates from any number of units. xample o. 2 To measuring something much slower, such as a bicycle, you must use a shorter distance because the elapsed time must fall within the 7.2 - second range. For this example, it took 3 seconds for a cyclist to travel 1/ of a mile. Reading the TCHYMTR dial displays a speed of mph, but the cyclist only traveled 1/ of a mile, so the actual speed would be 1/ of that or an average speed of 2mph over the quarter mile.
Tachymetre 8. OT - The scale is valid for all elapsed times from 7.2 seconds to seconds. If the duration of the event is outside this range, then the answer on the dial is not valid. ome of the following examples show ways to get around this limitation. XL UDRTR DMOLITIO TM TRT/TOP XL UDRTR DMOLITIO TM TRT/TOP FT DPTH 1 FT DPTH 1 3 3 2 3 2 3 xample o. 3 copier makes copies in seconds. The sweep second hand was thus stopped at the -second mark, which coincides with the figure 8 on the TCHYMTR scale. The hourly rate of this copier is 8 x, or 8 copies. xample o. manufacturing production line timed for 3 seconds produces 72 parts. topped at the 3-second mark, the chronograph second hand points to on the TCHYMTR scale; the production rate of the machine is x 72, or 8, parts per hour. More xamples: uppose you wanted to measure the speed of a jet airplane. fter traveling kilometers, you noted that seconds had elapsed. The TCHYMTR dial displays 9, but you traveled kilometers, so the answer would be times that, or 9 km/hour. You can also measure other things, like fuel consumption. uppose a pound of fuel took 8 seconds to burn. The chronograph second hand indicates on the TCHYMTR dial that you are burning 7 pounds of fuel per hour.

The further you are from the equator, the more accurate this method will be. In the northern hemisphere, bisect the angle between the hour hand and the o'clock * mark and set the bezel s (3s) indicator to that point. Hold the watch horizontal and point the hour hand at the sun; the bezel s indicator will be pointing orth. If there is any doubt as to which end of the line is north, remember that the sun rises in the east, sets in the west, and is due south at noon. The sun is in the east before noon and in the west after noon, so set the bezel s (3s) indicator to the left of * in the M and to the right of * in the PM. *ote: If your watch is set for Daylight avings Time instead of tandard Time, use the midway point between the hour hand and 1 o'clock to determine the north-south line. Miscellaneous t 8 F ( C), sound travels at 3m or 37yds / 1,9ft per second in air at sea level. Therefore, at 8 F ( C) sound will travel: 1 mile (1,7 yards /,28 feet) in.8 seconds 1, yards in 2. seconds 1 kilometer in 2.91 seconds To estimate the distance to an event (such as an explosion, muzzle flash, lightning, etc.), measure the time from the visual flash to the sound and multiply the seconds by the per second speed. For example the measured lightning to thunder time at 8 F is seconds. x 3m or 37yds / 1,9ft would produce 3,m or 3,7yds / 11,29ft. (2.1miles) 3 FT DPTH XL UDRTR DMOLITIO TM 3 2 1. lternately, you can divide the measured time at 8 F by.8 to get miles (s /.8 = 2.1miles), or 2. for thousand yard distance, or by 2.91 for kilometers.
