298 S. Manro, S. Kumar, S.S. Bhatia, S.M. Kang appropriate conditions, the existence and uniqueness of a fixed point. This result of Banach is known as Banach s fixed point theorem or Banach Contraction Principle. Many authors have extended, generalized and improved the Banach s fixed point theorem in different ways. Jungck [1] proved a common fixed point theorem for commuting mappings, which generalizes the Banachs fixed point theorem. This Many aurthors has generalized this theorem, but suffers from one drawback that the continuity of mapping throughout the space. Jungck [2] defined the concept of compatible mappings. Definition 1.1. Let f andg betwo self-mappings of a metricspace (X,d). Then f and g are is said to be compatible if lim d(fgx n,gfx n = 0 whenever {x n } is a sequence in X such that lim fx n = gx n = z for some z X. An immediate consequence [2, Proposition 2.2] is that if f and g are compatibleand fz = gz (z is called acoincidence point of f andg), thenfgz = gfz. In 1994, Pant [4] introduced the notion of R-weak commutativity in a metric space. Definition 1.2. Let f andg betwo self-mappings of a metricspace (X,d). Then f and g are called R-weakly commuting on X if there exists R > 0 such that d(fgx, gfx) Rd(fx,gx) for all x X. In 1997, Pathak et al. [7] generalized the notion of R-weakly commuting mappings to R-weakly commuting mappings of type (A f ) and of type (A g ). Definition 1.3. Let f andg betwo self-mappings of a metricspace (X,d). Then f and g are called R-weakly commuting of type (A g ) if there exists R > 0 such that d(ffx, gfx) Rd(fx,gx) for all x X. Similarly, the two self-mappings f and g are called R-weakly commuting of type (A f ) if there exists R > 0 such that d(fgx, ggx) Rd(fx,gx) for all x X. It is obvious that R-weakly commuting mappings commute at their coincidence points and R-weak commutativity is equivalent to commutativity at coincidence points. It may be noted that both compatible and non-compatible mappings can be R-weakly commuting of type (A g ) or (A f ), but the convse is not true. Definition 1.4. ([3]) Let f and g be two self-mappings of a metric space (X,d). Then f and g are called R-weakly commuting of type (P) if there exists R > 0 such that d(ffx, ggx) Rd(fx,gx) for all x X. In 1998, Pant [5] introduced a new continuity condition, known as reciprocal

COMMON FIXED POINT THEOREMS OF... 299 continuity and obtained a common fixed point theorem by using the compatibility in a metric space and also showed that in the setting of common fixed point theorems for compatible mappings satisfying contraction conditions, the notion of reciprocal continuity is weaker than the continuity of one of the mappings. Also, the notion of pointwise R-weakly commuting mappings made the scope of the study of common fixed point theorems from the class of compatible to the wider class of pointwise R-weakly commuting mappings. Subsequently, several common fixed point theorems have been proved by combining the ideas of R- weakly commuting mappings and reciprocal continuity of mappings in different settings. Definition 1.5. Let f and g be two self-mappings of a metric space (X, d). Then f and g are called reciprocally continuous if lim fgx n = fz and lim gfx n = gz, whenever {x n } is a sequence such that lim fx n = lim gx n = z for some z X. If f and g are both continuous, then they are obvious reciprocally continuous but the converse is not true ([5]). Recently, Pant et al. [6] generalized the notion of reciprocal continuity to weak reciprocal continuity as follows: Definition 1.6. Let f andg betwo self-mappings of a metricspace (X,d). Then f and g are called weakly reciprocally continuous if lim fgx n = fz or lim gfx n = gz, whenever {x n } is a sequence such that lim fx n = lim gx n = z for some z X. If f and g are reciprocally continuous, then they are obviously weakly reciprocally continuous but the converse is not true ([6]). As an application of weak reciprocal continuity, we prove common fixed point theorems under contractive conditions that extend the scope of the study of common fixed point theorems from the class of compatible continuous mappings to a wider class of mappings which also includes non-compatible and discontinuous mappings. In this paper, we prove common fixed point theorems for contraction mappings, which generalizes the result of Pant et al. [6] using the concept of weak reciprocal continuity in metric spaces. 2. Main Results Now, we are ready to give our main theorem.

300 S. Manro, S. Kumar, S.S. Bhatia, S.M. Kang Theorem 2.1. Let f and g be weakly reciprocally continuous self-mappings of a complete metric space (X, d) satisfying (C1) f(x) g(x), (C2) there exists a number h (0,1) such that d(fx,fy) hmax{d(gx,gy),d(fx,gx),d(fy,gy)), [d(fx,gy)+d(fy,gx)]/2} for any x,y X. If f and g are either compatible or R-weakly commuting of type (A g ) or R-weakly commuting of type (A f ) or R-weakly commuting of type (P), then f and g have a unique common fixed point. Proof. Let x 0 be any point in X. Then as f(x) g(x), we can define a sequence {y n } in X as y n = fx n = gx n+1. (2.1) Now, we show that {y n } is a Cauchy sequence in X. For proving this, by (C2), we have d(y n,y n+1 ) = d(fx n,fx n+1 ) hmax{d(gx n,gx n+1 ),d(fx n,gx n ),d(fx n+1,g n+1 ), [d(fx n,gx n+1 )+d(fx n+1,gx n )]/2} hmax{d(y n 1,y n ),d(y n,y n 1 ),d(y n+1,y n ), If d(y n,y n+1 ) > d(y n 1,y n ), then we have which is a contraction. Thus we have Further we can obtain [d(y n+1,y n )+d(y n,y n 1 )]/2}. d(y n,y n+1 ) hd(y n,y n+1 ), d(y n,y n+1 ) hd(y n 1,y n ). d(y n,y n+1 ) hd(y n 1,y n ) h 2 d(y n 2,y n 1 ) h n d(y 0,y 1 ).

COMMON FIXED POINT THEOREMS OF... 301 Therefore, for all n,m N (: set of natural numbers), n < m, we have d(y n,y m ) d(y n,y n+1 )+d(y n+1,y n+2 )+d(y n+2,y n+3 ) + +d(y m 1,y m ) (h n +h n+1 +h n+2 + +h m 1 )d(y 0,y 1 ) (h n +h n+1 +h n+2 + )d(y 0,y 1 ) = hn 1 h d(y 0,y 1 ) 0 as n. Thus {y n } is a Cauchy sequence in X. As X is complete, there exists a point z in X such that lim y n = z. Therefore, by (2.1), we have lim y n = lim fx n = lim gx n+1 = z. Suppose that f and g are compatible mappings. Now, by weak reciprocal continuity of f and g implies that lim fgx n = fz or lim gfx n = gz. Let lim gfx n = gz. Thencompatibilityoff andg gives lim d(fgx n,gfx n ) = 0, that is, lim d(fgx n,gz) = 0. Hence lim fgx n = gz. By (2.1), we get lim fgx n+1 = lim ffx n = gz. Therefore, by (C2), we get d(fz,ffx n ) hmax{d(gz,gfx n ),d(fz,gz),d(ffx n,gfx n ), As n, since h < 1 [d(fz,gfx n )+d(ffx n,gz)]/2}. d(fz,gz) hmax{0,d(fz,gz),0,d(fz,gz)/2} = hd(fz,gz), which is a contraction, so that, we get fz = gz. Again compatibility of f and g implies commutativity at a coincidence point. Hence gfz = fgz = ffz = ggz. Using (C2) we obtain d(fz,ffz) hmax{d(gz,gfz),d(fz,gz),d(ffz,gfz), [d(fz,gfz)+d(ffz,gz)]/2} = hmax{d(fz,ffz),0,0,[d(fz,ffz) +d(ffz,fz)]/2}, which implies that fz = ffz. Hence fz = ffz = gfz and fz is a common fixed point of f and g.

302 S. Manro, S. Kumar, S.S. Bhatia, S.M. Kang Next suppose that lim fgx n = fz. Then by f(x) g(x), there exists u X such that fz = gu and lim fgx n = gu. Compatibility of f and g implies lim gfx n = gu. By virtue of (2.1), this gives lim fgx n+1 = lim ffx n = gu. Using (C2), we get As n, d(fu,ffx n ) hmax{d(gu,gfx n ),d(fu,gu),d(ffx n,gfx n ), [d(fu,gfx n )+d(ffx n,gu)]/2}. d(fu,gu) hmax{0,d(fu,gu),0,d(fu,gu)/2} so that get fu = gu. Compatibility of f and g yields fgu = ggu = ffu = gfu. Finally, using (C2), we obtain d(fu,ffu) hmax{d(gu,gfu),d(fu,gu),d(ffu,gfu), [d(fu,gfu)+d(ffu,gu)]/2} = hmax{d(fu,ffu),0,0,[d(fu,ffu)+d(ffu,fu)]/2}, that is, fu = ffu. Hence fu = ffu = gfu and fu is a common fixed point of f and g. Now, suppose that f and g are R-weakly commuting of type (A g ). Now, weakreciprocalcontinuityoff andg impliesthat lim fgx n = fz or lim gfx n = gz. Assume that lim gfx n = gz. Then R-weak commutativity of type (A g ) of f and g yields d(ffx n,gfx n ) Rd(fx n,gx n ), that is, lim d(ffx n,gz) = 0. This gives lim ffx n = gz. Also, using (C2), we get As n, d(fz,ffx n ) hmax{d(gz,gfx n ),d(fz,gz),d(ffx n,gfx n ), [d(fz,gfx n )+d(ffx n,gz)]/2}. d(fz,gz) hmax{0,d(fz,gz),0,d(fz,gz)/2} so that we get fz = gz. Again, by using R-weak commutativity of type (A g ), d(ffz,gfz) hd(fz,gz) = 0. This yields ffz = gfz. Therefore ffz = fgz = gfz = ggz. Using (C2), we get d(fz,ffz) hmax{d(gz,gfz),d(fz,gz),d(ffz,gfz), [d(fz,gfz)+d(ffz,gz)]/2} hmax{d(fz,ffz),0,0,[d(fz,ffz) +d(ffz,fz)]/2},

COMMON FIXED POINT THEOREMS OF... 303 that is, we have fz = ffz. Hence fz = ffz = gfz and fz is a common fixed point of f and g. Similarly, if lim fgx n = fz, then we can easily prove. Suppose that f and g are R-weakly commuting of type (A f ). Again, as done above, we can easily prove that fz is a common fixed point of f and g. Finally, suppose f and g are R-weakly commuting of type (P). Weak reciprocal continuity of f and g implies that lim fgx n = fz or lim gfx n = gz. Let us assume that lim gfx n = gz. Then R-weak commutativity of type (P)off andg yieldsd(ffx n,ggx n ) Rd(fx n,gx n ),thatis, lim d(ffx n,ggx n ) = 0. Using (2.1), we have gfx n 1 = ggx n gz and ffx n gz as n. Also, using (C2) we get d(fz,ffx n ) hmax{d(gz,gfx n ),d(fz,gz),d(ffx n,gfx n ), [d(fz,gfx n )+d(ffx n,gz)]/2}. As n, d(fz,gz) hmax{0,d(fz,gz),0,d(fz,gz)/2} sothatfz = gz.again, byusingr-weakcommutativity oftype(p),d(ffz, ggz) Rd(fz,gz) = 0. This yields ffz = ggz. Therefore ffz = fgz = gfz = ggz. Using (C2), we get d(fz,ffz) hmax{d(gz,gfz),d(fz,gz),d(ffz, gfz), [d(fz,gfz)+d(ffz,gz)]/2} hmax{d(fz,ffz),0,0,[d(fz,ffz) +d(ffz,fz)]/2} so that fz = ffz. Hence fz = ffz = gfz and fz is a common fixed point of f and g. Similarly, if lim fgx n = fz, then we can easily prove. Uniqueness of the common fixed point theorem follows easily in each of the four cases by using (C2). Remark 2.2. Theorem 2.1 generalizes the result of Pant et al. [6]. Indeed, the condition (C2) is more general than the contractive condition of Pant et al. [6]. We now give an example to illustrate Theorem 2.1.

304 S. Manro, S. Kumar, S.S. Bhatia, S.M. Kang Example 2.3. ([6]) Let (X,d) be a metric space, where X = [2,20] and d(x,y) = x y for all x,y X. Define f,g : X X by { fx = 2 if x = 2 or x > 5, fx = 6 if 2 < x 5, gx = 2 if x = 2, gx = 11 if 2 < x 5, gx = (x+1)/3 if x > 5. Then it can be verified that f and g satisfy the contractive condition (C2) with 4/9 h < 1. Let {x n } be a sequence in X such that either x n = 2 or x n = 5 + 1/n for each n. Then f and g satisfy all the conditions of Theorem 2.1 and have a unique common fixed point at x = 2. References [1] G. Jungck, Commuting mappings and fixed points, Amer. Math.
