MODULI OF SHEAVES, FOURIER-MUKAI TRANSFORM, AND PARTIAL DESINGULARIZATION KIRYONG CHUNG AND HAN-BOM MOON Abstract. We study birational maps among 1) the moduli space of semistable sheaves of Hilbert polynomial 4m + 2 on a smooth quadric surface, 2) the moduli space of semistable sheaves of Hilbert polynomial m 2 + 3m + 2 on P 3, 3) Kontsevich s moduli space of genus-zero stable maps of degree 2 to the Grassmannian Gr(2, 4). A regular birational morphism from 1) to 2) is described in terms of Fourier-Mukai transforms. The map from 3) to 2) is Kirwan s partial desingularization. We also investigate several geometric properties of 1) by using the variation of moduli spaces of stable pairs. 1. Introduction In this paper, V is a fixed complex vector space of dimension 4. Let {x, y, z, w} be a basis of V. In P 3 = P(V ), Q = Z(xy zw) is a smooth quadric surface. Let Gr(2, 4) be the space of lines in P(V ). The aim of this paper is to understand birational maps between several moduli spaces. Here are the three main characters in this article. The space M 2 is the moduli space of semistable sheaves F on Q with Hilbert polynomial 4m + 2 and c 1 (Supp(F)) = (2, 2). The space R is the moduli space of semistable sheaves on P 3 with Hilbert polynomial m 2 + 3m + 2. The space K is Kontsevich s moduli space of genus-zero stable maps of degree 2 to Gr(2, 4). Note that all of these moduli spaces are main ingredients in curve counting theories, in particular, generalized Donaldson-Thomas (or Pandharipande-Thomas) theory and Gromov-Witten theory. One of the central problems in modern algebraic geometry is to understand the relation between these curve counting theories. For an excellent survey, see [32]. By using the standard deformation theory on each moduli space, it is not difficult to show that all of those three moduli spaces are 9-dimensional varieties. Although it does not quite seem obvious, they are indeed birational. The fact that they share a common open dense subset can be seen as follows. (We provide details in Section 4.) A general point on M 2 parametrizes a line bundle O C (p + q) of degree 2 on a smooth elliptic quartic curve C on Q. On R, a general point parametrizes a pair (Q, l) where Q is a smooth quadric surface in P 3 and l is one of two rulings on Q = P 1 P 1. (This pair was called a regulus in [29].) By imposing the condition that the line p, q is in Q 1, we can uniquely determine a quadric and assign a ruling class p, q. Thus we can assign [(Q 1, p, q )] on R. One can check that this is indeed a bijection on an open dense subset. Furthermore, from (Q, l), we can obtain a family over P 1 of lines in Q P 3 which is in the class of l. So we have a map P 1 Gr(2, 4). This map has degree two, hence it is an element of K. 1.1. Main results. In this paper, we study the birational maps between these spaces. More precisely, we show that the birational morphisms can be described in terms of Fourier-Mukai (shortly, FM) transforms and Kirwan s partial desingularization. Theorem 1.1 (Theorem 5.7). There exists a birational morphism Ψ : M 2 R. The map Ψ is a composition of two FM transforms Ψ 1 : D b (Q) D b ((P 3 ) ) and Ψ 2 : D b ((P 3 ) ) D b (P 3 ). Furthermore, Ψ is a smooth blow up of two points on R. By the work of Le Potier in [24], R can be constructed as an elementary (PGL 2 PGL 2 )-GIT quotient of a projective space P(C 2 V, C 2 ). This GIT quotient has strictly semistable points, and R has some bad singularities. Surprisingly, its partial resolution of singularities has a very different moduli theoretic interpretation. Theorem 1.2 (Theorem 6.1). There is a birational morphism π : K R, which is Kirwan s partial desingularization of R. It is a composition of two blow ups along the singular loci of R. In summary, we have a common contraction M 2 K Ψ R. Because these two maps are blow ups along disjoint centers, on the log minimal model program (MMP) of M 2 or K, the other space does not appear. In the past few years, there has been an explosion of the study of birational geometry of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves from the viewpoint of log MMP. Indeed many of these birational models are moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves ([2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 13]). Our work arose from the study of the geometry of M 2 in the viewpoint of the Bridgeland wall-crossing on moduli spaces of torsion sheaves on rational surfaces with Picard number 2. During this study, the first author observed that by applying the work of Le Potier in [24, Section 4], one may describe the birational morphism between its birational models in terms of FM transforms. In [24], Le Potier applied a FM transform to obtain a birational map from a moduli space of torsion sheaves on P 2 with Euler characteristic zero to a moduli space of torsionfree sheaves on its dual plane (P 2 ). Theorem 1.1 tells us that a FM transform may provide a birational map between two moduli spaces of sheaves on different projective varieties. π

MODULI OF SHEAVES, FM TRANSFORMS, AND PARTIAL DESINGULARIZATION 3 1.2. Desingularization of M 2. Along the locus of strictly semistable sheaves, M 2 has some singularities. Finding a desingularization of a singular moduli space is a problem with a very long history and interesting implications. Finding a resolution of a given moduli space is useful to study the geometry of the singular moduli space. For instance in [23], by using her desingularization method, Kirwan computed the rank of intersection cohomology groups of the moduli space of vector bundles on a curve when it is singular. In the case of moduli spaces of vector bundles on a curve, several desingularizations with certain moduli theoretic interpretations are constructed in [28, 33]. Furthermore, the desingularization can be a highly nontrivial example of a variety with a desired geometric property. In [30], O Grady constructed a new compact hyperkähler manifold by taking a desingularization of a certain singular moduli space of torsion-free sheaves on a K3 surface. Two main theorems in this paper combined with [12, Theorem 1.2] provide an explicit desingularization of M 2. K is singular along the locus D of stable maps that are two-to-one maps to their images. By [12, Theorem 1.2], the blow up of K along D is a smooth projective variety CC 2 := CC 2 (Gr(2, 4)), namely, the space of complete conics. On R, two blow up centers for M 2 R and K R are disjoint. Thus the fiber product M 2 := M 2 R CC 2 is a desingularization of M 2. It would be very interesting to find a moduli theoretic interpretation of M 2. M 2 CC 2 K M 2 R Question 1.3. What is the moduli theoretic meaning of M 2? 1.3. Rationality. The original motivation of this paper was to show the rationality of M 2, which was asked in [3, Conjecture 35]. The fact that M 2 is birational to K gives the rationality of M 2, because the rationality of K, or more precisely, the space of conics in Gr(2, 4) is well-known, for example in [29, Section 3.10] or in [8]. On the diagram below, H = Hilb 2m+1 (Gr(2, 4)) is the Hilbert scheme of conics in Gr(2, 4), and C = Chow 1,2 (Gr(2, 4)) is the normalization of the irreducible component of the Chow variety containing smooth conics. All maps are birational morphisms. K H C Gr(3, 6) 1.4. Geometry of M 2 and its numerical invariants. Besides the result described above, by using the moduli space M α 2 of α-stable pairs, we computed some topological invariants of M 2. In Section 3, we study 1) the variation of the moduli space of α-stable pairs from α = to α = 0 + and 2) the fiber of the map φ : M 0+ 2 M 2. Indeed, when α = 2, there is a single wall-crossing which is a

In Section 3 we show that there is a diagram M 2 M 0+ 2 π O Q (2, 2) M 2 2 M 2 where φ, π are algebraic fiber spaces and the other two maps are birational morphisms. As consequences, we compute 1) the singular locus, 2) the rank of the Picard group, and 3) the virtual Poincaré polynomial of M 2. Also we obtain a classification of all free resolution types of objects in M 2, which is crucial in Section 5. 1.5. Organization of the paper. This paper is organized in the following way. In Section 2, we give definitions of moduli spaces appearing in this paper and review some well-known properties. In Section 3, we study the geometry of M 2 and compute its numerical invariants. Section 4 offers an elementary and classical argument to show the rationality of M 2. In the next two sections, we describe the birational map in Section 4 in terms of FM transforms and partial desingularization. In Section 5, we prove Theorem 1.1. Finally, in Section 6, we show Theorem 1.2. 1.6. Notation and conventions. We work over the complex number C. We will denote the direct sum F m of m-copies of a coherent sheaf F by mf if there is no confusion. The boldface letters R, M, K, N refer to (coarse) moduli or parameter spaces. Acknowledgements. Preliminaries In this section, we review definitions and several well-known properties of moduli spaces we will discuss. 2.1. Moduli space of semistable sheaves. Let X be a smooth projective variety with fixed polarization L. For a coherent sheaf F on X, the Hilbert polynomial P (F )(m) is χ(f L m ), where χ is the Euler characteristic. If the support of F has dimension d, P (F )(m) has degree d and it can be written as P (F )(m) = d i=0 a i m i i!. The coefficient r(f ) := a d of the highest power is called the multiplicity. For each semistable sheaf F, there is a filtration (the so-called Jordan-Hölder filtration) 0 = F 0 F 1 F n = F such that gr i (F ) := F i /F i 1 is stable and p(f )(m) = p(gr i (F ))(m) for all i. Finally, two semistable sheaves F 1 and F 2 are S-equivalent if gr(f 1 ) = gr(f 2 ) where gr(f ) := i gr i (F ). In his monumental paper [34], Simpson proved that there is a projective coarse moduli space M L (X, P (m)) of S-equivalence classes of semistable sheaves of fixed Hilbert polynomial P (m). There is an open subset M L (X, P (m)) s parametrizing stable sheaves. For a great introduction and the details of proofs and related results, see [19]. In this paper, we will focus on two examples. Let Q P(V ) be a smooth quadric surface. Since Q = P 1 P 1, we may denote a line bundle as O Q (a, b) for two integers a, b. Take L = O Q (1, 1) as a polarization. Consider M L (Q, 4m + 2). This moduli space has several connected components, which are parametrized by β H 2 (Q, Z) representing the scheme theoretic support of F. Thus we may write M L (Q, 4m + 2) = M L (Q, β, 4m + 2). β H 2(Q,Z) Definition 2.1. Let M 2 := M L (Q, c 1 (O Q (2, 2)), 4m + 2). So M 2 is the moduli space of S-equivalence classes of semistable torsion sheaves of multiplicity 4, of the support class c 1 (O Q (2, 2)) and χ = 2. It is a c 2 1 + 1 = 9-dimensional variety (see [24, Proposition 2.3]). Definition 2.2. Let R := M OP 3 (1)(P 3, m 2 + 3m + 2). It is also a 9-dimensional variety. 2.2. Moduli space of stable pairs. To analyze some geometric properties of M 2, we will use the moduli space of stable pairs. As in the previous section, let Q = P 1 P 1 be a smooth quadric surface and let L = O Q (1, 1). A pair (s, F ) s consists of a coherent sheaf F on Q and a nonzero section O Q F. Fix a positive rational number α. A pair (s, F ) is called α-semistable if F is pure and for any subsheaf F F, the inequality P (F )(m) + δ α r(f ) P (F )(m) + α r(f ) holds for m 0. Here δ = 1 if the section s factors through F and δ = 0 otherwise. When the strict inequality holds, (s, F ) is called as an α-stable pair. As in the case of sheaves, we can define the Jordan-Hölder filtration and S-equivalence classes of pairs. There exists a projective scheme M α L (Q, P (m)) parameterizing S-equivalence classes of α-semistable pairs with Hilbert polynomial P (m) ([25, Theorem 4.12] and [18, Theorem 2.6]). Also, we have a decomposition of the moduli space M α L(Q, 4m + 2) = M α L(Q, β, 4m + 2). β H 2(Q,Z) We denote the moduli space M α L (Q, c 1(O Q (2, 2)), 4m+2) by M α 2. The extremal case that α is sufficiently large (resp. small) is denoted by α = (resp. α = 0 + ). The deformation theory of pairs has been studied by many authors. For our purpose, see [18, Corollary 1.6 and Corollary 3.6].

MODULI OF SHEAVES, FM TRANSFORMS, AND PARTIAL DESINGULARIZATION 6 2.3. Kontsevich s moduli space of stable maps. For a smooth projective variety X, fix a Chow class β A 1 (X, Z). Let (C, x 1,, x n ) be a projective connected reduced curve with n marked points. A map f : (C, x 1,, x n ) X is called stable if C has at worst nodal singularities; x 1,, x n are n distinct smooth points; Aut(f) <, or equivalently, ω C ( x i ) is f-ample. Let M g,n (X, β) be the moduli stack of n-pointed stable maps with g(c) = g, f [C] = β. It is well-known that M g,n (X, β) is a proper Deligne-Mumford stack and its coarse moduli space M g,n (X, β) is a projective scheme ([17, Theorem 1]). In this paper, let K := M 0,0 (Gr(2, 4), 2L) and let K 1 := M 0,1 (Gr(2, 4), 2L) where L be the effective generator of A 1 (Gr(2, 4), Z). By [21, Corollary 1], these are normal irreducible varieties. There is a natural forgetful map π : K 1 K which forgets the marked point. One can compute the dimension of K (resp. K 1 ), which is 9 (resp. 10), by using [17, Theorem 2]. 3. Geometry of M 2 In this section, we compute some numerical invariants of M 2 by using the variation of moduli spaces of stable pairs. 3.1. Wall-crossing and geometry of M 2. Recall that M α 2 is the moduli space of α-semistable pairs on Q with Hilbert polynomial 4m + 2 and support class c 1 (O Q (2, 2)). In two extremal cases α = and α = 0 +, we have well-known structure morphisms on M α 2. Lemma 3.1. (1) The moduli space M 2 is isomorphic to the relative Hilbert scheme Hilb 2 (C/ O Q (2, 2) ) of two points over the universal quartic curve C O Q (2, 2) in Q. The latter space is a P 6 -bundle over the Hilbert scheme Hilb 2 (Q) of two points. (2) There exists a forgetful map φ : M 0+ 2 M 2 which associates F to the pair (s, F ). Proof. The isomorphism in Item (1) is given in the following way (see [31, Proposition B.8] and [18, 4.4]). For a pair (Z, C) Hilb 2 (C/ O Q (2, 2) ), we associate an -stable pair (s, I D Z,C := Ext1 Q(I Z,C, ω Q )) M 2 where s is constructed in the following way. The first map is injective since O Z is supported on a zero-dimensional scheme ([19, Proposition 1.1.6]) and the second map is surjective because of the pureness of O C. One can easily see Ext 1 Q(O C, ω Q ) = O C by using a resolution of O C. By composing the restriction map O Q O C and the second map in (3.1), we have a canonical section s : O Q I D Z,C. Note that the length l(ext2 Q(O Z, ω Q )) = 2, so I D Z,C has Hilbert polynomial 4m + 2. The second part of Item (1) comes from the fact that h 0 (I {p,q} O Q (2, 2)) = 7 for any two points {p, q} on Q (possibly p = q) (see [6, Example 6.1]).

We denote the pair (s, F ) by (1, F ) if the section s H 0 (F ) is non-zero and (0, F ) otherwise. Proposition 3.2. There is a simple wall crossing M 2 M 0+ 2 M 2 2 at α = 2. When α = 2, an irreducible component of the flipping locus is the subvariety parametrizing S-equivalence classes of (1, F ) = (1, O C ) (0, O L ) for a rational cubic curve C of the class O Q (2, 1) (resp. O Q (1, 2)) and a line L of the class O Q (0, 1) (resp. O(1, 0)). Furthermore, the moduli space M 0+ 2 is a smooth variety of dimension 10. Let (1, F ) P Ext 1 Q((1, O C ), (0, O L )) = P 2 be an -stable pair. Then it fits into the exact sequence 0 (0, O L ) (1, F ) (1, O C ) 0. Geometrically, the pair (1, F ) corresponds to a pair of subschemes (Z, L C) such that Z is contained in L. After the wall-crossing, the pair (1, F ) is replaced by a pair (1, G) in an extension obtained by switching the sub pairs and the quotient pairs: 0 (1, O C ) (1, G) (0, O L ) 0 ([18, Proof of Lemma 4.24]). Hence we obtain 0 + -stable pairs (1, G) P Ext 1 Q((0, O L ), (1, O C )) = P 1. Proof of Proposition 3.2. Consider a pair (s, F ) on Q. From an upper bound of the dimension of the space of global sections of semistable sheaves ([9, Theorem 1.3]), one can see that the possible wall is one of the following: (1) (1, F 4m+2 ) = (1, F 3m ) (0, F m+2 ) or (2) (1, F 4m+2 ) = (1, F 3m+1 ) (0, F m+1 ). Here F k means a semistable sheaf with Hilbert polynomial k. But the case (1) cannot occur because F 3m = OC for some plane cubic curve C and thus it is not contained in the quadric surface Q. Hence the wall occurs if and only if (1, F 4m+2 ) = (1, F 3m+1 ) (0, F m+1 ). By the classification of stable sheaves with small Hilbert polynomials in P 3 ([16]), we know that F 3m+1 = OC and F m+1 = O L for some twisted cubic curve C and a line L. We show that M 0+ 2 is a smooth variety. Since the complement of the wall crossing locus in M 0+ 2 is isomorphic to the corresponding locus in M 2 and χ(ext ((1, F ), (1, F ))) = 10, it is sufficient to check that the obstruction space Ext 2 ((1, F ), (1, F )) vanishes for the pairs (1, F ) in the wall crossing locus of M 0+ 2 ([18, Corollary 3.10, Theorem 3.12]). The pair (1, F ) fits into a nontrivial extension 0 (1, O C ) (1, F ) (0, O L ) 0. This implies that H 1 (F ) = 0 and F is a semistable sheaf on Q. From [18, Corollary 1.6], we have an exact sequence Hom(C, H 1 (F )) Ext 2 ((1, F ), (1, F )) Ext 2 (F, F ) = Ext 0 (F, F ( 2, 2))

Let F M 2 \ M s 2 be a polystable sheaf, that is, a semistable sheaf satisfying F = gr(f ). Then F = O C1 O C2 for two conics C 1 and C 2 on Q. Proof. Note that if F M 2 is strictly semistable, then the destabilizing subsheaf must have the Hilbert polynomial 2m+1, because this is the only nontrivial integer valued polynomial dividing 4m + 2. The only semistable sheaf with this Hilbert polynomial is O C1 for some conic C 1 in Q. The quotient sheaf also has the same Hilbert polynomial 2m + 1 and hence it is O C2 for some conic C 2 in Q. Therefore F = gr(f ) = O C1 O C2. Corollary 3.4 ([3, Corollary 23]). The strictly semistable locus M 2 \ M s 2 is isomorphic to P 3 P 3 /Z 2. In the next proposition we compute analytic locally the fibers of the last forgetful map φ : M 0+ 2 M 2. Proposition 3.5. Let φ : M 0+ 2 M 2 be the forgetful map (s, F ) F. (1) Over M s 2, φ is a P 1 -fibration; (2) Let D P 3 P 3 /Z 2 be the diagonal. Over (P 3 P 3 /Z 2 \ D) M 2 \ M s 2, φ is a P 2 p=q P 2 -fibration over P 3 P 3 /Z 2 \ D, where P 2 p=q P 2 is a reducible variety obtained by gluing two P 2 s along two closed points p and q. On (P 2 \ {p}) (P 2 \ {q}), the fiber parametrizes extensions (1, F ) P Ext 1 ((1, O C1 ), (0, O C2 )) = P 2 for C 1 C 2 O Q (1, 1) = P 3. The gluing point p (= q) parametrizes the unique pair (s, O C1 O C2 ) for conics C 1 C 2. Suppose that (s, F ) is in the inverse image of the strictly semistable locus. We may assume that gr(f ) = [O C1 O C2 ] for two conics C 1, C 2 O Q (1, 1). First assume that C 1 C 2 and F O C1 O C2. Then by the same computation as in the case (2), one can see that P Ext 1 ((1, O C ), (0, O C )) = P 2. 3.2. Some numerical invariants. Here we leave computations of some numerical invariants of M 2. Proposition 3.6. The rank of the Picard group of M 2 is 3. Furthermore, M 2 is Q-factorial. Proof. In Theorem 5.7 we will show that Pic(M 2 ) is a blow up of R at two smooth points. Since rank Pic(R) 1, rank Pic(M 2 ) 3. On the other hand, for a smooth projective surface X with q(x) = 0, it is wellknown that rank Pic(Hilb n (X)) = rank Pic(X) + 1 ([15]). So rank Pic(Hilb 2 (Q)) = 3. Then by Item (1) of Proposition 3.2, rank Pic(M 2 ) = 4. Note that M 2 is isomorphic to M 0+ 2 up to codimension 2. So rank Pic(M 0+ 2 ) = 4. By Proposition 3.5, the forgetful map φ : M 0+ 2 M 2 is a dominant morphism between two normal varieties with connected fibers. Thus φ is an algebraic fiber space. The same is true for its restriction to M 0+ 2 φ 1 (M s 2 ) M s 2. Thus Pic(M s 2) is embedded into Pic(M 0+ 2 φ 1 (M s 2 ) ). Moreover, since there is a relative ample divisor on M 0+ 2 φ 1 (M s 2 ) which is not a pull-back of a divisor on M s 2, rank Pic(M 0+ 2 φ 1 (M s 2 ) ) > rank Pic(M s 2). From the dimension-counting using the explicit description of the base and fibers in Items (2) and (3) of the same proposition, codim M2 (M s 2) c 2 and codim M 0 + φ 1 (M s 2) c 2. For the motivic properties of the virtual Poincaré polynomial, see [27, Section 2]. The classification of stable pairs in Proposition 3.5 enables us to compute the virtual Poincaré polynomial of M 2. For P 3 P 3 /Z 2 \ D, if we remove the section p, we obtain (P 2 \ {p}) (P 2 \ {q})- fibration. By taking a degree 2 étale cover P 3 P 3 \ D of P 3 P 3 /Z 2 \ D, we obtain two disjoint (P 2 \ pt)-fibrations. By adding two sections, we obtain two P 2 -fibrations. By [27, p.21 (6)] again, the computational result is the same as in the case of Zariski bundles. On the other hand, by the proof of Proposition 3.5, we have P (M 0+ 2 ) = P (P 1 )P (M s 2) + (2P (P 2 ) 1)(P (Sym 2 P 3 ) P (P 3 )) + P (P 2 ) P (P 3 ) and thus obtain P (M s 2). Finally, P (M 2 ) = P (M s 2) + P (Sym 2 P 3 ). 3.3. Free resolution of elements of M 2. Another application of the wall crossing analysis is the classification of free resolutions of elements in M 2. We will use the result of this section in Section 5. Proposition 3.8. Let F M 2. Then F has one of the following free resolutions: (1) 0 2O Q ( 1, 1) 2O Q F 0; (2) 0 O Q ( 1, 2) O Q (1, 0) F 0; (3) 0 O Q ( 2, 1) O Q (0, 1) F 0. Proof. If the line L = p, q generated by p and q is not one of two rulings of Q, then {p, q} is a complete intersection of two conics in Q. Then (1, F ) fits into the short exact sequence 0 (1, O C ) (1, F ) (0, O L ) 0 for a cubic curve C and a line L in Q. If F is strictly semistable, then gr(f ) = O C1 O C2 for two conics C i, and by the horseshoe lemma type argument, F has the resolution of the form (1). Now assume that F is stable. Then every pair (s, F ) with a nonzero section s H 0 (F ) = C 2 is 0 + -stable. Also, the pair (1, F )

Then obviously (s t, F ) for all t 0 is contained in the complement of the wall crossing locus. Hence, as we discussed before, the possible resolutions of the underlying sheaf F are given by the list. This proves the claim. Definition 3.9. Let D 1,0 (resp. D 0,1 ) be the locus of semistable sheaves F M 2 having the resolution of type (2) (resp. type (3)) of Proposition 3.8. Both of them are isomorphic to the complete linear system O Q (2, 2) = P 8 because the isomorphism class of sheaves is completely determined by the support. Note that D 1,0 D 0,1 M s 2. Remark 3.10. By using the language of derived categories, a point in D 1,0 or D 0,1 can be described by an extension class. If F D 1,0 (similarly for D 0,1 ), then F fits into an exact triangle 0 O Q (1, 0) F O Q ( 1, 2)[1] 0. Conversely, for every nontrivial triangle of such form, F is in the locus D 1,0 because Ext 1 (O Q ( 1, 2)[1], O Q (1, 0)) = Ext 0 (O Q ( 1, 2), O Q (1, 0)) = H 0 (O Q (2, 2)) = C 9. These objects form one of the walls in the sense of Bridgeland. After the Bridgeland wall crossing, we have a unique nontrivial triangle 0 O Q ( 1, 2)[1] G O Q (1, 0) 0 because Ext 1 (O Q (1, 0), O Q ( 1, 2)[1]) = Ext 2 (O Q (1, 0), O Q ( 1, 2)) = C. Thus the wall crossing is a (divisorial) contraction. Compare with the P 2 case in [7, 6] and [26, 6]. In Section 5, we will describe the contraction in terms of FM transforms ([24, 4]). 4. Rationality of M 2 In this short section, we answer the rationality question. Later in Sections 5 and 6, we will provide a more theoretical description of the birational map. Here we leave a very elementary proof of the rationality of M 2 for readers who are interested in the description of the birational map in classical terms. Proposition 4.1. Two spaces K and M 2 are birationally equivalent. Proof. It is sufficient to construct an injective map on some Zariski dense open subset of the space K since both varieties have the same dimension and are irreducible. We begin with K 1 := M 0,1 (Gr(2, 4), 2L), the moduli space of 1-pointed stable maps. Let K 0 1 be the open subset parametrizing smooth 1-pointed conics in Gr(2, 4) such that 1) it generates a smooth quadric in P(V ) = P 3 and 2) the smooth quadric is not equal to Q. Let K 0 := π(k 0 1) for the forgetful map π. For each stable map [f : (P 1, x) Gr(2, 4)] K 0 1, we have a pair (Q, l) of a quadric surface in P 3 and a line l Q obtained by a pointed conic in Gr(2, 4). Clearly, it is well-defined on families. Define C := Q Q. Then C is a quartic curve since Q Q. Let {p, q} = l Q be the set of intersection points. Then the line bundle L := O C (p + q) on C is

A different choice of a marked point x P 1 defines a different line l in the same ruling class. But the line bundle L does not depend on the choice of x, because the natural map P 1 Pic 2 (C) is constant, since the image is a smooth elliptic curve. Therefore the map descends to a map ψ : K 0 M 2. Now we show that ψ is injective. Let F 1 := O C1 (p 1 + q 1 ) = O C2 (p 2 + q 2 ) =: F 2 where C i = Q Q i and {p i, q i } = Q Q i for i = 1, 2. Also let l i = p i, q i. Obviously C 1 = C 2, so let C := C 1 = C 2. Then Q, Q 1, Q 2 H 0 (I C (2)) = C 2. So the set {Q, Q 1, Q 2 } is linearly dependent. Without loss of generality, we may assume that (4.1) Q 1 = aq 2 + bq. Note that a 0 because Q 1 Q. If b 0, we have {p 1, q 1 } Q 2. If l 1 = p 1, q 1 Q 2, then l 1 Q since l 1 Q 1 and (4.1). This is a contradiction to the fact that l 1 Q = {p 1, q 1 }. So l 1 Q 2 = {p 1, q 1 } and l 1 is not a ruling of Q 2. Now, by using their different resolutions of the sheaves F i on Q 2 (see Proposition 3.8), one can check that F 1 F 2, which makes a contradiction. Thus b = 0 and Q 1 = Q 2. By Proposition 3.8 again, if l 1 and l 2 are on the different ruling classes, then F 1 F 2. Thus l 1 and l 2 are on the same ruling class and (Q 1, l 1 ) and (Q 2, l 2 ) come from the same stable map. As a consequence, we obtain the following result, which gives an affirmative answer for [3, Conjecture 35]. Corollary 4.2. The moduli space M 2 is rational. Proof. The moduli space K is birational to H := Hilb 2m+1 (Gr(2, 4)), the Hilbert scheme of conics in Gr(2, 4). The latter space is birational to Gr(3, 6) ([29, Section 3.10]), which is a rational variety. 5. Birational map between M 2 and R via Fourier-Mukai transforms 5.1. The geometry of the moduli space R. Recall that R is the moduli space of semistable sheaves in P 3 with Hilbert polynomial m 2 + 3m + 2. Here we collect well-known properties of R intensively studied in [25, Section 3]. Proposition 5.1. [25, Proposition 3.6, Remark 3.8] (1) Every semistable sheaf F R has a free resolution 0 2O P 3( 1) 2O P 3 F 0. For the converse, see Lemma 5.2. (2) (a) If F R s, then F = I L,S (1) for an irreducible quadric surface S and a line L S. (b) If F R \ R s, then gr(f ) = O H O H for planes H and H in P 3. (3) The map π : R O P 3(2) = P 9 defined by the Fitting ideal of F is a double covering ramified along the discriminant divisor. Here, denotes the locus of singular quadric surfaces in P 3, which is a degree 4 singular hypersurface. We believe that the following result has also been observed by Le Potier. Since we could not find the precise statement and its proof, we leave it as a lemma.

Hence, F is semistable because gr(f ) = O H O H. So we have the following result. Proposition 5.3. [25, Corollary 3.7] The space R is isomorphic to the space N(4; 2, 2) of Kronecker modules. By definition, the space N(4; 2, 2) is constructed as the GIT quotient P Hom(O P 3( 1) 2, O 2 P 3)//G = P Hom(C 2 V, C 2 )//G = P(V gl 2 )//G, where G = PGL 2 PGL 2 acts as (A, B) M = AMB 1 ([25, Corollary 3.7]). Therefore R = N(4; 2, 2) is a normal variety. For this action, there are strictly semistable points and the GIT quotient is singular. In the next section, we will discuss a systematic (partial) resolution of these singularities, the so-called Kirwan s paritial desingularization ([22]). As a simple corollary of Proposition 5.1, we have: Corollary 5.4. The canonical divisor K R is 8π O P 9(1). Proof. The singular locus Sing( ) of is isomorphic to P 3 P 3 /Z 2. Thus the codimension of Sing( ) in is two. Hence if we apply the covering formula for the map π, then we have K R = π K P 9 + 1 2 [ ].
