No Peggy didn t get impeached, she just moved away and we will miss her! As your new leader, I ll try to carry on with her ideas for programs for the remainder of the spring. We had a nice program in February highlighting WOW Phalaenopsis by myself showing where those big beautiful moth orchids that we take to shows come from, and how they are staked in preparation for displays. Our March program will be Tips and Tidbits on Orchid Growing presented by YOU, the members. Several of you have submitted photos of your growing areas and I will show them so you can tell the group your secrets! If you haven t submitted photos please send to me ahead of the meeting. Page 2 Eastern Iowa Orchid Society receives a Silver Certificate from AOS Our club set up an amazingly beautiful, color balanced display at the Minnesota Winter Carnival Orchid Show, Como Park Arboretum, Jan. 27-28. we received the Show Trophy for the best display in the show and then it was scored by the American Orchid Society Judges and was awarded a Silver Certificate with 85 points. This is akin to a national AOS flower award. We named the display Hawkeye Snowmen for little statues discretely placed in amongst the plants. (The Hawkeye Gopher rivalry continues). This is the first time one of our exhibits has scored this well. Scoring is equally apportioned between plant variety, plant quality, and display presentation. Congratulations are in order to all those who contributed plants and especially the Hamptons, Bill Page, and the Dusdiekers who set up the display. By Nile D

Page 3 Burr! Madison Orchid Quest was cold and snowy By Nile Dusdieker It seems almost every year we encounter inclement conditions going to one orchid show. As temperatures hovered around zero we transported flowers to the Olbricht Botanical Gardens in Madison Wisconsin one week after the Minnesota Show. A couple paphs got nipped but the resulting exhibit still was successful receiving a first place and Best of Class ribbons for Orchid Society Displays. A good share of the plants were second timers, having been at the previous show and were well travelled over 1000 miles in transit. The bright Phalaenopsis were the focus of the presentation and really added a wow factor against a rock wall background. Above-the display room at Olbricht Botanical Gardens and the pinks at the center of our display. Below-Set up crew, our white collection and what a frosted paph looks like!

Page 4 Rockin at the Fair Grounds: Batavia Orchid Show By Nile D Fifty five plants, 43 ribbons, 1 AOS award for the Show Trophy, EIOS had a good day at the Fair! The Batavia Orchid Society show is held at the Du Page County Fairgrounds each year; the only change this time was that we were in the smaller café building which meant the quarters were a little tight and the lighting was dark, We managed a broader exhibit and placed halogen lights at each side. Indeed, we had some unusual plants including species Vanda, coerulescense, some pleurothallis, the Bee Orchid shown on the front page, and some real heritage cattleyas from the 1970s from Doc Bannister that one just doesn t see anymore today! Six club members were present to help compose the display in short time flat! In addition to the Show Trophy for best display in the show, Dusdiekers received the Best of Class for their Phrag. Cardinale; Doc Bannister got the Anything Orchids Cattleya Award for C. Don De Michaels, and Lois Dusdieker received the Best of Class Phalaenopsis for Phal. Sogo Yukidian V3. A bit of controversy here, however! The plant was registered in her name but it looked remarkably like the white phal we picked up at Doc Bannisters in Des Moines earlier in the week. So how did this occur? Actually we had 4 white phals and can only enter 3 in a single class. Lois got the left over which turned out to be the winner! All is fair in the Olympics and orchid ribbon judging! C. Don De Michaels Razzmatazz left Phrag. Cardinale below Set up crew: Hamptons, Bill Page, Dusdiekers and Andy Coghill-Behrends above White Phals from Doc. Bannister guess which was the winner registered to Lois! right

Page 5 EIOS MEMBER WINS Joe Koss Award 2017 We honor those who came before us, who worked hard to establish the Illinois Orchid Society and give us a strong foundation to build on. We honor Joe Koss as one of our founding members, as a Past President, and as the driving force to establish an AOS judging center in the Chicago area. The Illinois Orchid Society in conjunction with the Chicago Judging Center honor Joe Koss with a trophy awarded at each of our (Illinois) shows. We also have named an annual trophy for him, for the plant that receives the highest AOS point score at Illinois Orchid Society shows or at Chicago Judging Center monthly judging sessions. This year, the recipient is Deno Kandis, member of the Illowa Orchid Society and Eastern Iowa Orchid Society. His Paph. A P Philip Kandis Emperor FCC-AOS was given 90 points at the August Chicago Center monthly judging session. It was awarded for its clear, deep color, for wonderful size and symmetry, and elegant presentation. An engraved crystal bowl was presented to Mr. Kandis at an Illowa Orchid Society meeting by Nile S. Dusdieker Feb. 7th, 2018. We congratulate Deno Kandis for his excellent growing.
