Ralph Waldo Emerson It is very heartening to note that the students of Jyotisha Bharati of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, India, have decided to launch a data base project on Progeny, the first of its kind in the country under the leadership of Mr. Neeraj Kumar, an engineer in computer engineering and also a student of Jyotisha Bharati. At the outset, I would like to state that this write up is a collection of a few concepts on progeny. The subject is so vast that it would need hundreds of case studies and reference to the classics and granthas of the tropical and sidereal astrology, to do justice. Among all, Time is the greatest constraint. This write up could only be a pointer that the learned students and lovers of astrology have a stupendous task of research and soul finding ahead of them, thereby making the divine science of astrology a noble art, where the light within the human soul merges with the light of Divinity. While, thanking the management of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Jyotisha Bharati, especially Prof. G.B. PROGENY - TROPICAL OR SAYANA ASTROLOGY CHILDREN PROGENY OFFSPRING - ISSUE Max Handiel, in The Message of the Stars states: Whether a person will have children or not cannot be judged from his or her individual horoscope with any degree of accuracy for this matter is not dependent on one only, therefore the horoscope of the prospective parents should be compared and the individuals indications blended, then if both horoscopes show a fruitful nature many children will be born, but if both are only moderately fertile, or if one is very fruitful and the other barren, the forecast must be made accordingly. Principal houses of children Givers of children Planets denying children and causing bareenness Role of Mercury in progeny 5 th and 11 th houses. Jupiter, Venus and Moon in the houses of children, well-aspected and in fruitful signs. Saturn and Mars - Depends on the stars and planets with which it is configurated. - If oriental, it tends to give children - If occidental, it tends to deny and cause barrenness. Barrenness No children, Sterility, Impotence, Unfruitful. Barren signs Aries, Gemini, Leo and Virgo. Planets classed as barren: The Sun, Uranus, Saturn and Mars. Ketu (Cauda) is classed as a barren influence. Page3

Houses of children according to Ptolemy: - Principal rules of children 10 th and 11 th houses, planets in them or configurated with them. - If there are no planets in them, then take the 4 th and 5 th houses. A few causes of barrenness: - The Sun and malefic in barren signs and dominating the houses of children. - The Sun and malefics being the rulers of offsprings in the chart and in barren signs; without the benefic aspects of Jupiter or Venus and the malefic elevated above the benefics. - The Sun afflicted in Capricorn. - The Sun and Mercury afflicted in barren signs. - The Sun, Uranus, Saturn or Mars in the 5 th or 11 th houses and afflicted. - The Sun, Saturn, Mars or Ketu in the 5 th house or a barren sign. - When the lord of the 1 st and 5 th b e in evil aspect. - Mars in evil aspect to 5 th cusp and Saturn in the 11 th house. - No children: When the Moon in the Husband s chart or Sun in the wife s chart are applying to Uranus, Saturn or Ketu in the 5 th house. If children have be born then there should be powerful testimonies of fruitfulness. - A native unfit for procreation: The with Mercury in conjunction to, parallel of declination and in opposition of both Saturn and Mars, especially in Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius. Impotence: - Dr. L.H. Cornel state on page 385 in his magnum opus Encyclopedia of Medical Astrology that impotence is a Venusian disease, caused by affliction to Venus. - The 17 th degree of Gemini on the Ascendant is a degree of impotence. - Impotence in males Venus be in angle, especially the western angle, and Saturn in conjunction with her or in,mutual reception and Mars elevated, above Venus. Eclipses: - At a Solar Eclipse solar activity is low and depleted. An eclipse of the Sun falling on the places of malefic in the birth chart increases the original strength of such malefic, whether it relates to trouble, sickness or death. - At the new moon, if there be an eclipse of the Moon, Lunar activity is more depleted than that of the Solar eclipse. - The effect of an eclipse can never be good, even though it falls on the place of benefics. - A male born at an eclipse of the Sun may never live, or expires soon after birth. - The case is the same with females born at a Lunar eclipse. Indications of progeny: - The Moon becomes the most significant of all for it is the planet of fecundation, showing the inclination of the male and the power of the female. - Venus is the planet is love and attraction - Jupiter, known as Putra Karak is the planet of benevolence. - If either of these planets is in the Fifth House, which indicates children, and in one of the fruitful or double-bodies signs, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Gemini, or Sagittarius, it is an indication that the person has a fruitful nature and will have a number of children who will be of good and pleasant disposition. - Taurus, Virgo, Libra and Aquarius are considered as moderately fruitful signs Page5

- Aries, Leo and Capricorn are considered as barren signs. When the violent, turbulent Mars, or Saturn, famed in ancient mythology as a destroyer of children, or the Sun or Uranus, are in the Fifth or Eleventh Houses, they either prevent the birth of children or destroy them during childhood. This is particularly true if Aries, Leo or Capricorn are on the cusps of either of these Houses. The Moon in these signs, when afflicted by the Sun, Saturn, Mars and Uranus give very little chances of children being born. - When the Moon is in Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Gemini, or Sagittarius, in good aspect to Jupiter or Venus, a large family is indicated. But when the Moon is in Aries, Leo, or Capricorn, and afflicted by one of the malefics or by the Sun, the marriage is usually barren. Saturn and Venus in the Seventh House is also a sign of marriage without issue. Large Family - The Moon in Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces in good aspect to Jupiter or Venus promise a big family. - The signs Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus or Virgo on the Vth cusp with Moon well-aspected also promises a large family. - The Moon in the 5 th house or 11 th house in a fruitful sign. - The Moon in the 5 th house, other than barren signs and well-aspected by benefics. - Rulers of 1 st and 5 th well-aspcted. - Rahu in the 5 th house well-aspected by by Moon or Venus. - Jupiter, Venus or Moon well aspected in the 5 th house. Few children who do not live long: - The Sun, Uranus, Saturn, Mars and Ketu give few children or deny them. - The Sun in 5 th house, the Sun afflicted in Capricorn. - The Sun, Uranus, Saturn, Mars or Mercury in the 5 th house give few children; but when afflicted they may die early. - Mercury occidental in barren signs and configurated with barren planets. - Leo sign on the cusp of the 5 th house. - Lord of the Ascendant in 5 th house and afflicted by Saturn, Mars, or Ketu. Children who are a blessing to the parents: When Jupiter or Venus are in the 5 th house, well-aspected but with no evil aspects. Page7

THE FIXED STARS INFLUENCING PROGENY/NATIVITY William Lily in Christian Astrology, 1647; p.621 states: The fixed stars give great gifts, and elevate even from poverty to an extreme height of fortune In this chart the good and the bad can be seen in his horoscope, and particularly in a study of the fixed stars prominent at his birth. The native had a tragic death and lived upt the age of 29 years only. Page8

Deborah Houlding in Skyscript states about the birth chart of the world renowned romantic poet, P. B Shelly, in relation to the influence of the fixed stars on the nativity : Page10 - The gloomy and melancholic attraction to water:the Saturn / Neptune opposition across the ascendant / descendant axis is an obvious warning of difficulties and sadness, and together with the 12th house Moon in Pisces. Even as a child he was fascinated by it, and is reported to have spent long hours playing with model boats and sailing little notes in bottles. - The Saturn / Neptune opposition across the angles, describes him as fragile and weak in constitution and slight of build. Ascendant ruler Venus adds to his effeminate appearance: he had long, curling hair and a "delicate almost feminine appearance". - The fixed stars aggressive and vicious influence: Mesartim and Sharatan of the constellation Aries rise in the chart at 0 Taurus 17, and 1 Taurus 04 respectively on the ascendant which assists the malefic influence of other stars to manifest as considerable harm. - Ascendant lord, Venus is badly afflicted: without dignity, combust of the Sun and conjunct the violent fixed star Dubhe (nature: Mars), then at 12 Leo 17. It makes an even more powerful conjunction with Acubens (nature: Saturn & Mercury) at 10 Leo 44, because this star is within 1 of latitude as well. Acubens is an unfortunate star on the southern claw of the Crab whose influence is associated with "malevolence and poison", as stated in Vivian Robson, Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology; p.116. Besides his own suicide attempt involving the use of poison, the death of at least two of his children was, in effect, the result of poisons entering their bodies.

- A tendency to suffer misfortune through his children is indicated by the affliction of the 5th house ruler, the Moon - weak, peregrine and void of course in the 12th house; his children (and love affairs) become the source of sorrow and private grief. That he was able to convey the depth of his emotions through artistic expression was probably of small recompense to Shelley the man, but became the major accomplishment of the native as a poet. - Accolades and expert achievement are marked by the position of the 10th-house ruler - Saturn - on the ascendant. Saturn on the trine of Mercury, ruler of his third house, shows an effortless gift to find success through writing and communicating ideas. Otherwise Saturn is not especially dignified, and for one so young would seem hardly capable of denoting the level of lasting fame that he aspired to, were it not for the influence of several beneficial fixed stars on his Midheaven. Ascella (nature: Mercury & Jupiter), then at 10 Capricorn 38, was close by longitude and latitude, promising good fortune and success in literary pursuits. The benefic Mercury/Venus star Vega, from the artistic constellation Lyra, was closely conjunct his Midheaven at 12 Capricorn 25, bringing artistic and optimism into his work. The closest star by longitude and latitude was Manubrium from the constellation Sagittarius, at 12 Capricorn 06. Its influence combines the nature of the Sun and Mars, giving a dynamic flair to his writing that made it compelling and controversial at the same time.. Page11 The manner of death - drowning - is illustrated by many factors in the chart. Principally we would expect this to be shown by the 8th-ruler, Jupiter, and certainly it is dangerously placed, almost conjunct the descendant and weighed down by Mars and Neptune. Neptune is boding evil because of its inconjunct aspect with the malefic Ketu in the 12th house, particularly since this falls exactly on the fixed star Scheat at 26 Pisces 30, a disreputable star in the heavens, supposed to cause "extreme misfortune, murder, suicide and drowning".

- He died during his Saturn return whilst progressed Venus drew to an opposition of the North Node / Scheat conjunction, with a New Moon at 26 Cancer emphasising its power. - Canopus (nature: Saturn & Jupiter), denoting significant events at sea, is appropriately placed on his 4th house of 'grave'. PROGENY - SIDEREAL OR NIRAYANA ASTROLOGY In Manusmrti, 2.27, in Garbhdhanasamskaram, गभ ध न Garbhadhana, literally gifting the womb or placing the seed in the womb, is the act of conception. This is the first sacrament which followed immediately on every matrimonial union. In Fruits of Worshipping Each Nakshatra Vedacharya Dr. david Frawley states : - Twashtar desired, "May I gain a wonderful progeny." One who makes the appropriate offering to Twashtar, to Chitra, gains a wonderful progeny. - Prajapati desired, "May I find the root of progeny." One who makes the appropriate offering to Prajapati, to Mula, gains the root of progeny. In mythology were are told that during the wedding ceremony of Shiva and Parvati, Shiva asked Parvati to come to his left after the agni pradakshina, symbolizing that they had been married. Parvati said she would not accept this as a marriage until Shiva granted her seven wishes. Shiva did so, and then made seven provisions, which Parvati acknowledged, and then came to his left. From time immemorial, it is customary that with each step, the bride and groom pray for food, strength, wealth, happiness, progeny, cattle and devotion. Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra: chapter 16, Effects of 5th House the following shlokas on progeny : mentions 1-3. O Brahmin, now I tell you the effects, related to 5th House. Page13 - If the Lords of Lagna and 5th are in their own Rāśis, or in an angle, or in a trine, one will enjoy thorough happiness through his children. - Should 5ths Lord be in 6th, 8th, or 12th House, there will be no offspring

- Should the Lord of 5th be combust, or be with malefics and be weak, there will be no children; even, if per chance issues are obtained, they will only quit the world soon. - The Conjunct of 5ths Lord with Lagnas Lord in a good House will ensure early obtainment of children apart from happiness through them. - If they join in an evil House, they will prove a defect in this respect. 4. If 5ths Lord is in 6th House, as Lagnas Lord is conjunct with Mars, the native will lose his very first child, where after his female will not be fertile to yield an offspring. 5. Should 5ths Lord be in fall in 6th, 8th, or 12th House, while Mercury and Ketu are in 5th House, the natives wife will give birth to one child only. 6. If 5ths Lord is in fall and be not in Aspect to 5th, while Saturn and Mercury are in 5th, the natives wife will give birth to one child only. 7. Should 9th Lord be in Lagna, while 5ths Lord is in fall and Ketu is in 5th along with Mercury, obtainment of progeny will be after a great deal of ordeal. 8. If 5ths Lord is in 6th, 8th, or 12th House, or be in an inimical Rāśi, or be in fall, or in 5th itself, the native will beget issues with difficulty. 9. Should 5th House be owned by Saturn, or Mercury and be occupied, or aspected by Saturn and Mandi, one will have adopted issues. 10. Should Sun and Moon be together in a Rāśi and in the same Navāmśa, the native will be brought up by three mothers, or two fathers. 11. Adopted issue is indicated, if 5th is tenanted by six Planets, while its Lord is in 12th House and Moon and Lagna are endowed with strength. Page14 12. There will be many children, if 5ths Lord is strong, while 5th is aspected by strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.

13. If 5ths Lord is with Moon, or is in her Decanate, the native will beget daughters. 14. If 5ths Lord is in a Movable Rāśi, while Saturn is in 5th, as Rahu is with Moon, the child (so born) is of questionable birth. 15. Undoubtedly the native is born of others loins, if Moon is in the 8th from Lagna, while Jupiter is in the 8th from Moon. Malefics Aspect, or Conjunct is essential in this Yoga. 16. If 5ths Lord is exalted, or be in 2nd, 5th, or 9th House, or be conjunct with, or aspected by Jupiter, obtainment of children will be there. 17. One will obtain children, that will indulge in mean deeds, if 5th is occupied by three, or four malefics, while 5ths Lord is in fall. A benefic (including Mercury) in 5th is excluded in the said combination. 18. If 5th is occupied by Jupiter, while its Lord is with Venus, one will obtain an offspring in his 32nd, or 33rd year. 19. Should 5ths Lord be in an angle along with Jupiter, the Karak, one will beget a child at the age of 30, or 36. 20. If Jupiter is in 9th House, while Venus is in the 9th from Jupiter along with Lagnas Lord, one will beget a child at the age of 40. 21. The native will at the age of 32 lose his child, if Rahu is in 5th, 5ths Lord is in Conjunct with a malefic and Jupiter is in debilitation. 22. There will be loss of children at 33 and 36, if a malefic is in the 5th from Jupiter, while another is in the 5th from Lagna. 23. Should Mandi be in Lagna, while Lagnas Lord is in fall, grief on account of loss of child at the age of 56 will come to pass. Page15

24-32. Number of Children. - There will be 10 sons, if 4th House and 6th House are occupied by malefics, while 5ths Lord is in deep exaltation, joining Lagnas Lord, as Jupiter is with another benefic. - Nine will be the number of sons, that one will beget, if Jupiter is in deep exaltation, as Rahu is with 2nds Lord and 9th is occupied by its own Lord. - There will be eight sons, if Jupiter is in 5th, or 9th House, while 5ths Lord is endowed with strength and 2nds Lord is in 10th House. Saturn in 9th House, while 5ths Lord is in 5th itself, gives 7 sons, out of which twins will be born twice. - If 5ths Lord is in 5th in Conjunct with 2nds Lord, there will be birth of 7 sons, out of which 3 will pass away. - Only one son is denoted, if there be a malefic in 5th House, while Jupiter is in the 5th from Saturn, or vice versa. If 5th House has a malefic in it, or, if Saturn is in the 5th from Jupiter, the native will beget offspring only through his second, or third wife. - Should 5th be occupied by a malefic, while Jupiter is conjunct with Saturn in 5th House, as Lagnas Lord is in 2nd House and 5ths Lord is conjunct with Mars, one will live long, but lose his children one after the other, as they are born. Remedial Measures in Vedic astrology : Sadhana for Progeny It is believed from ancient times that women whose children always remain sick or die prematurely, who get only male or female issues, who are infertile, may get rid of their anxiety by ardently praying to Vedmata Gayatri. There are several instances within my knowledge in which childless women had begged the favour of getting a child from Vedmata Gayatri and they have been duly blessed by Bhagwati. Nothing is impossible for Gayatri Mata to grant. There can, therefore, be no impediment for a barren woman being blessed with an issue. If a pregnant woman meditates upon effulgent Light in their womb before sunrise and sunset and perform mental Jap of Gayatri, the child to be born will be brilliant, wise, long-living and renowned. A woman who has no issue should sit in Sadhana with a wet cloth around her waist and should meditate as if the light of Gayatri, like the rays of the Sun is entering into her womb, through her vagina. Eyes should be closed. This Sadhana helps in conception. Kunti had performed this Sadhana and had been able to conceive and give birth to Karna. By doing this Sadhana a barren woman can conceive and those who get abortions or whose children die immediately after birth are able to give birth to normal children. Page17

CALCULATION OF TITHI SPHUTA FOR PROGENY 1. Multiply the longitudes of the Moon by 5. 2. Multiply the longitudes of the Sun by 5. 3. Subtract the longitudes of the Sun from that of the Moon. 4. Convert the figure into degrees, Minutes and seconds. 5. Then,, divide this by 12. 6. The quotient plus 1 is tithi sphuta. 7. If it is less than 15, comes under Sukla Paksha. 8. If it exceeds 15 then it said to be in Krishna Paksha. 9. If the reminder is less than 6 the karana is in 1st half. 10. If it exceeds 6 then it is in 2nd half. - Tithis in Suklapaksha are benefic in getting children. - The tithis in Krishnapaksha are malefic and reduce the chances of getting progeny. - The 4,6,8,9,10,12 and 14 tithis in either paksha reduce the chances. - The 1st day of krishnapaksha and the 14th day of suklapaksha are good and promote the chances. - Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna, Sakuni, vishti are malefic. Others are benific. - Chances of progeny will be promoted if both the tithi and karana are benific If any one between the tithi and karana is malefic, chances of progeny will be reduced. - If bijasphuta is strong, the malefic tithi cannot operate. But the malefic karana particularly visthi destroys he chances, though the tithi may be benefic. - In Santahna deepika and other books it is told that some planetary pattern denote childlessness caused by Pitrusapa, Deva sapa, Vishnu sapa, Stree Matru sapa, Sarpa sapa, Marjala sapa, Brahma sapa, Garbhasrava and Retasskhalana. - In every chart we have to study the fifth house in Rasichakra and Saptamamsachakra. The ashtakavarga bindus in 5th house from lagna and from the sign where guru is situated also is to be examined. Page19

BHEEEJA SPHUTA AND KSHETRA SPHUTA FOR PROGENY Formulas signifying positive or negative indications of conception in the male and female horoscopes in sidereal astrology: Formula for the male chart( Bheeja Sphuta) or longitude of seed: a) Add the longitudes of the Sun, Venus and Jupiter b) Then expunge the multiples of 12 signs from the total and name it A c) Then find out the navamsa position of A. For males, flow of seminal fluid is controlled by Venus and power to help in causing pregnancy is governed by the Sun who is the lord of vitality. it the astrological equivalent of sperms. How to find out the indications: - If A falls in odd signs in both the rashi and navamsa positions, the indications are positive. - If the position of A falls in odd and even signs in either the rash or navamsa positions, then it indicates that the native needs medical assistance. - If both the positions are in even signs, then it would difficult to have off springs. Formula for the female chart (Kshetra Sphuta) the longitude of the bed (literally the ground for sowing the seed - the astrological equivalent of ovaries): a) Add the longitudes of the Moon, Mars and Jupiter b) Then expunge the multiples of 12 signs from the total and name it B. c) Then find out the navamsa position of B. Page20 Moon gives strength to conceive and bear the children and also regulates and controls the flow and cycle of menstruation; whereas Mars, in case of females, plays very important role and is responsible for quality and superiority of blood.

Jupiter who is a natural significator for issues for both males and females should find good placement in horoscopes. How to find out the indications: - If B falls in Even signs in both the rashi and navamsa positions, the indications are positive. - If the position of B falls in odd and even signs in either the rash or navamsa positions, then it indicates that the native needs medical assistance. - If both the positions are in odd signs, then it would difficult to have off springs. - For exhaustive and deep study of matters relating to fertility and conception, Bheeja and Kshetra sphuta must be seen in conjunction of: - The 5th bhava - Jupiter, the santhan karaka - D/7 chart One school of thought says that if Kshetra falls in the house of Surya or is aspected by it s direct rays then fertility is burnt.
