Lesson 5: Newton s First Law of Motion EQOD: How can you predict an object s direction and motion?

Initial Thoughts: Let s say you have a penny on top of a card placed on the open end of a cup. What do you think will happen to the penny when you slowly pull away the card versus when you click the card away quickly?

Evidence I: Isaac who? Inertia is a property of matter in which an object continues to stay in its state of motion unless a force acts upon it. If an object is still, it stays still UNLESS. Likewise, if an object is moving in a straight line, it will until an outside force changes its motion. Example: Cars, Soccer balls, etc.

Evidence I: Isaac who? We will continue to learn about inertia and how force works. However, first we must learn about a great Physicist who helped define the 3 Laws of Motion. This gentleman also invented Calculus and is the reason why we first began to understand Gravity. Do you know who this physicist was?

Evidence I: Isaac who? We will continue to learn about inertia and how force works. However, first we must learn about a great Physicist who helped define the 3 Laws of Motion. This gentleman also invented Calculus and is the reason why we first began to understand Gravity. Do you know who this physicist was? Sir Isaac Newton!

Evidence I: Isaac who? Today we will learn more about the accomplishments done by Sir Isaac Newton using some Critical Thinking Strategies. 1. Clean Read 2. Purposeful Read 3. Share Responses. Clean Read: # paragraphs Circle key words? words I don t know * key ideas

Evidence I: Isaac who? 1. Clean Read 2. Purposeful Read 3. Share Responses. Purposeful Read: Highlight or underline at least four sentences that help you answer the following question(s): What are Newton s 3 Laws of Motion? Why do you think some of Newton s discoveries were important for the scientific world?

Evidence I: Isaac who? 1. Clean Read 2. Purposeful Read 3. Share Responses. Purposeful Read: Now, take 5 minutes to write a 3-4 sentence summary of the article using at least 2 supporting details from the article. According to the article Inventors and Scientists: Sir Isaac Newton, Isaac discovered. The article also mentions that. These discoveries were important because.

Evidence II: First Law of Motion There are 3 Different Laws of Motion, today we will focus on the First Law which has to do with Inertia. Newton s 1st Law of Motion states that objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion unless a force is applied to the objects. Example: Moving in a car and suddenly stopping!

Evidence II: First Law of Motion We can predict the direction that an object will move when we calculate its NET FORCE. Net force = the vector sum of all forces acting upon an object Vector = an arrow that shows the magnitude of force and its direction

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples:

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples:

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples:

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples: What is the net force? What direction will the box go to? 10N 30N

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples: What is the net force? What direction will the box go to? 10N 30N Downwards Direction with a Net Force of 20N

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples: What is the net force? What direction will the box go to? 23N 42N

Evidence II: First Law of Motion Examples: What is the net force? What direction will the box go to? 19N in a Leftwards Direction 23N 42N

Analysis 1. Restate the definition of inertia in your own words 2. Jaime was pushing a door to close but it suddenly stopped. He realized he had accidentally slammed the door on Lamar. How is this an example of the First Law of Motion? 3. Xochitl was ice skating in the Kroc Center, pushing herself with a force of 360N forward. However, this was the first time she ice skated and she couldn t stop. To help her, her friend Michael pushed her backward with a force of 420N. Label the diagram below to show the two forces acting on Xochitl. What is her net force and direction?

REFLECTION: Take out your Isaac Newton article Creating a Found Poem Go back through the text and look for 5-10 words that stand out to you. At this time you should also be selecting several (5-7) phrases that you find particularly powerful, moving, or interesting. Pay special attention to the examples that reflect the immense contributions to science that Newton made. In your journal, make a list of the words and phrases that you selected. Keep them in the order that you found them! Read through your list and try to cut out anything that is dull, or unnecessary, or that just doesn t seem right for a poem about Sir Isaac Newton s great contributions to Science! Once edited, you may be able to consider the tone or feeling of the poem. Can you now come up with a better title than Found Poem? Now arrange the words and phrases so they are poem-like. Pay attention to line breaks (when to start a new line), layout, and other elements that will emphasize important words or significant ideas in the poem. You can also put key words by themselves

Summary Take 7 minutes to write a summary about what you learned about Newton s First Law of Motion and Net Force. Please make sure you have 4-5 FULL and COMPLETE sentences.

Big Idea Objects remain unchanged (objects in motion stay in motion and objects at rest stay at rest) unless they experience an unbalanced net force that causes a change in motion.
