CLICK 6 OCTOBER 2011 Gautam Rajadhyksha - The star Photographer A tribute by Narayan Panje Hon.PSI There is a vanity in everybody. Gautam Rajadhyaksha understood this early as a Portrait Photographer. He successfully used soft-filter to achieve that. Gautam s Soft-focus photography became his unique style. His Portraits gained such a popularity that it was a privilege for people to get photographed by Gautam. He clicked pioneers in various fields. JRD Tata. Genl. Manek Shaw, Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhosle, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bacchan, Rekha,Madhuri Dixit, Sachin Tendulkar.., the list very long. Everybody knew they were in safe hands, they will look their best, rather better than they are as the saying goes in Marathi pratyakshahuni pratima sundar. The success and popularity he gained, the height he reached as a Photographer is unmatched. Anybody who is somebody in this continent would know Gautam and his style of photography. He was not just a Photographer, he was a Star. Gautam Rajadhyaksha, born on16th Sept.1950, a science graduate from St. Xavier s obtained Diploma in Advertising and Public relation. Joined photo services department in leading advertising agency Lintas, eventually becoming head of the department. At Lintas he could watch from vantage point stalwarts like Jehangir Gazdar, Vilas Bhende, Mitter Bedi, and Andrian Stavens going about their work. The urge to pick up a quality camera kindled. Bought his first camera Nikon F3. As hobby he shot Shabana (a collage mate), Jackie and Tina. Then he would take pictures of models who came to Lintas for campaigns after the official shoot was over. His cousin sister Shobha De influenced him for writing along with photography. She helped him publish the photographs in magazine. Then there was no looking back. Most of the leading film magazines would regularly published the beautiful portraits of famous stars clicked by Gautam. It is said that every actress acquired a certain status only when Lata Mangeshkar sang for her, likewise every actress knew she had arrived when Gautam shot her. Gautam had the rare distinction of photographing three generation of Samarth family Shobhana,Nutan and Tanuja siblings and Kajol. He also had the honor of photographing four generation of Mangeshkars. Among his countless memorable portraits are Lata and Asha together. So are Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh together, Nutan,Smita,Shabana, Madhuri s portraits. The photographs are self explanatory that he had very good understanding of light and the subjects are comfortable in front of the camera and cameraman. Photographer Gautam had acquired a greater personality. He inspired a generation of youngsters to become photographer. Saby Sammuel has said Gautam was one of the reasons he took up photography. Ashutosh Govarikar said he wanted to be photographer like Gautam since childhood. A photographer cousin(govind) of mine from Bangalore was so much influenced that he named himself after Gautam Rajadhyaksha as Govind Samrat i.e. Samrat in place of Rajadhyaksha. I had few occasions meet Gautam. His sincerity, humbleness was memorable experience. My cousin once came to Mumbai and wanted to meet Gautam. Just phone call and he invited us to his place and spent around two hours with us. He presented the book Faces to my cousin. At another instance Madhu Sali, a friend mine from Bhusawal wanted a faculty for workshops. (He used to organize workshops of three/four days for 250 or 300 photographers). He wanted a glamorous and well-known photographer, insisted on meeting Gautam with a request to be faculty. But he turndown the offer suggesting a technically better photographer Hari Mahidhar ( the same which I had suggested ). Gautam visited PSI on few occasions and left cherish able moments. Gautam left on the heavenly abode on 13 th Sept.2011, leaving behind long lasting sweet memories. May the divine soul rest in peace.
