OBJECTIVES SWBAT classify a mixture as a suspension, colloid or solution. SWBAT identify the properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
CLASSIFYING MATTER CONCEPT MAP Today we will create concept maps. A concept map helps us organize our information we review in class.
MATTER Objects that take up space and have mass. Everything in the universe is made up of MATTER. Matter cannot not be created or destroyed by any chemical or physical process
PURE SUBSTANCES Substances that are made of only one type of atom or molecule. Compounds Chemical combinations of two or more atoms ex: NaCl, MgCl2, HCl Elements Made up of atoms, cannot be further separated by physical or chemical means ex: sodium, potassium
Heterogeneous Mixture where the substances are not evenly distributed. They usually involve a mixture of a solid in a solid. MIXTURES A mixture is a substance made by combining two or more different materials in such a way that no chemical reaction occurs Homogeneous Mixture where the materials are evenly distributed. Usually involves a mixture of two or more liquids, gases or a solid that dissolves in a liquid Salad Soup Taco Kool-Aid Iron Shavings
SUSPENSION A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture containing solid particles that are sufficiently large for sedimentation. Usually they must be larger than one micrometer. This type of mixture will create different layers for each substance in the mixture. Example: Root Beer Float Seperatory Funnel Organic Chemistry
Has the ability to scatter light. COLLOIDS A type of heterogeneous mixture that consists of particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance. Colloids include gels, sols, and emulsions; the particles do not settle and cannot be separated out by ordinary filtering or centrifuging like those in a suspension. Example: Mayonnaise Fog Smog
SOLUTION A type of homogeneous mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent). Particles, atoms, ions, or compounds that WILL NOT scatter light. Solution have 2 parts a solvent and a solute. Examples: Water Clean Air Salt Water

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING Match the particle diagrams above with the correct description. Remember each shape represents a different element 1. ELEMENT 2. COMPOUND A B C D E DESCRIPTION 3. MIXTURE OF ELEMENTS 4. MIXTURE OF COMPOUNDS 5. MIXTURE OF ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS PARTICLE DIAGRAM
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING Classify each type of matter using the classification system we just learned. Circle the correct answer in each column Chicken Noodle Soup Blood Charcoal Clay Glass Oxygen Material Pure Substance (PS) Mixture (M) Pure substance Mixture Pure substance Mixture Pure substance Mixture Pure substance Mixture Pure substance Mixture Pure substance Mixture Element (E) or Compound (C) Homogeneous (Ho) or Heterogeneous (He) Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous Element Compound Homogeneous Heterogeneous
CONCEPT MAP ACTIVITY Chemists study many thousands of natural substances from the earth's crust, the atmosphere, and the oceans, as well as synthetic substances produced in their laboratories. In order to simplify the task of learning about all of these different materials, scientists have developed classification schemes. How can different kinds of matter be classified to help scientists learn about their properties? What are the relationships between the categories and types of matter in the world? How are compounds, elements, mixtures, and pure substances related to each other?
