MRD 207 METADATA DETAIL PAGE The following represents the Basic description of an information holding. To obtain more information about this holding, see the section named Contacts. GENERAL INFORMATION Official Name of the Data Set or Information Holding: Bedrock topography and overburden thickness mapping, southern Ontario Acronyms are Used to Identify the Data Set or Information Holding: MRD207 Describe the Data Set or Information Holding: Gao, C., Shirota, J., Kelly, R.I., Brunton, F.R., van Haaften, S. ( authors) The Ontario Geological Survey has developed a protocol or methodology to generate regional bedrock elevation and overburden thickness maps using water well, geotechnical and petroleum drill records as well as geological observations for southern Ontario. Using this methodology, bedrock topography and overburden thickness maps of southern Ontario were generated in ESRI ArcGIS (Grid) format. These core data sets are also available in ASCII text format for non-esri users. This release contains files for Google Earth users as well as a stand-alone bedrock crosssection viewer. To use Google Earth or the cross-section viewer, at least 128 MB of RAM is required (256 MB or higher recommended). This release also includes a report (.pdf format) outlining the protocols and methodology developed by the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) to generate regional bedrock elevation and overburden thickness maps for southern Ontario. Details of the data sets are provided in a readme (.pdf) file and a metadata (.pdf) file. The Intended Use and Purpose for Collecting the Data Set or Information Holding: This digital mapping initiative for southern Ontario was undertaken to determine the true nature of the bedrock surface both in thin-drift areas and in areas where overburden is thick in order to better understand both exposed and buried bedrock topographic features in relation to the known and/or inferred regional bedrock geology. Such information will aid other provincial government agencies, municipal governments and Conservation Authorities in characterizing regional geological information for land-use planning, source water protection legislation and nutrient management legislation purposes. This information will complement the digital seamless Paleozoic bedrock and karst map layers, which have been compiled simultaneously for southern Ontario. The objective of this product is to collect and disseminate geoscience information for Ontario.
