Part 1 Protected Areas Database of Korea Part 1. Protected Areas Database of Korea Part 2. Management & Maintenance of Korean PAs Database Part 3. Key Challenges for PAs in Korea 2

3 1. Is there a national protected areas database? How comprehensive is it? Does it include federal, provincial as well as municipal protected areas and areas in cities? 2. What kind of information is available: basic or GIS? 3. How many of the country s protected areas are recoded? 4. Percentage of protected areas in database without GIS, with GIS points or with GIS polygons? 5. What system/technology is used to store the data? Protected Areas Management System

Each agencies have their own database, but unified database is not. 2. Most PA was already built by GIS polygon 3. 1,401 PA was recorded in Korea, several small PA is not filed. 4. Filed PA was totally constructed by GIS polygon 5. Each agencies use each GIS system (usually use ESRI system, AutoCAD and, GEOmania etc.) 6

Part 2 Management and Maintenance Of Korean protected areas dataset Part 1. Protected Areas Database of Korea Part 2. Management & Maintenance of Korean PAs Database Part 3. Key Challenges for PAs in Korea 9

10 1. Who manages and maintains the national dataset in Korea? 2. How often is the Korean dataset updated and how do work? 3. How is the data being gathered? 4. How is the data being presented and disseminated? 5. How is the data being used for national/regional/international reporting?

11 1. Each agencies managing their own PA data. 2. Each agencies have their own managing system. Usually dataset updates every time if the boundary was changed. 3. Each agencies gathered their own PA data. 4. Some places informed by the map mostly for the tourist 5. Each agencies made their own report and this is using for their management work.

Part 3 Key Challenges for protected areas in Korea Part 1. Protected Areas Database of Korea Part 2. Management & Maintenance of Korean PAs Database Part 3. Key Challenges for PAs in Korea 12

13 1. Key strengths / weaknesses Key Strengths : GIS data, but not integrated. Key weaknesses : overlapped PAs by each management agencies, ambiguous managing purpose 2. Key challenges for data management and maintenance in Korea Integrating data, rearrangement of scattered PA system 3. What is the future development of the national protected areas dataset in Korea? Total management system for all PAs. Designating more PA area.

Status of the Protected Area 1,401 PAs., 19,533.2 km2 Terrestrial and Inland water : 13,606.8km2 (10.1%) Coastal and Marine : 5,926.4km2 (1.2%) 14

19 Status of overlapped designation areas 1,401 PAs, 19,533.1km2 (Terrestrial 13,606.7km2, Marine 5,926.4km2 ) Except of overlapped designation areas 15,485.3km2 ( 10,087.1km2, 5,398.2km2 ) Overlapped designation areas 5,445.3km2 ( 3,519.6km2, 528.2km2 ) Terrestrial PAs Coastal & Marine PAs 28% of total PA was designated by 2+ PA

20 Example of overlapped PA system Jirisan (Mt.) Seoraksan (Mt.) 5 different PA system was Duplicated in the same place

21 Challenges & Future Direction of PA in Korea Establishment of Integrated System for all PA Establishing Management Standard of each duplicated PA systems Enlarging PA especially Marine & Wetland area Long-term Monitoring system for PA Management
