FOURTH GRADE, LESSON 11 SOLAR SYSTEM 1 Fourth Grade, Lesson 11 Solar System Vital Information Grade / Level: Fourth Grade (4) Subject: Spanish Language Topic or Unit of Study: Solar System Lesson Title: El Sistema Solar Author: LISD Volunteer Spanish Language Committee Date: Created on December 13, 2011. Language Objective(s): Summary Description: Time Frame: Summary Students will learn vocabulary relating to the solar system. Students will learn vocabulary relating to the solar system and they will also learn how to use it in phrases. 1 class session of 30 minutes New terms: English Planets Sun Moon Stars Galaxy Universe Milky Way Comets Constellations Orbit Earth Mars Mercury Venus Saturn Jupiter Neptune Uranus Which planer is closest to the sun? Which planet is farthest from the sun? Vocabulary Spanish Los planetas El sol La luna Las estrellas La galaxia El universo La Vía Láctea Los cometas Las constelaciones La órbita La Tierra Marte Mercurio Venus Saturno Júpiter Neptuno Urano Cuál planeta está más cerca del sol? Cuál planeta está más lejos del sol?

FOURTH GRADE, LESSON 11 SOLAR SYSTEM 2 Which planet do we live on? What is the fifth planet called? Which planet is called The red planet? Which planet is the largest? How do you say in Spanish En cuál planeta vivimos? Cómo se llama el quinto planeta? A qué planeta le dicen El planeta rojo? Cuál planeta es el más grande? Cómo se dice en español? Materials and Resources (Including Technology, Links, and Attachments) Print out of the review and new phrases Solar system flashcard words (at the bottom of this lesson) Whiteboard and dry erase markers Learning Plan PREPARATION: 0. Print out (or write) the review and new phrases from the lesson. 0. Print out the flashcards for the solar system words found at the end of the lesson. INTRODUCTION [10 MINUTES] 1. Welcome the students to Spanish class using the term Bienvenidos. 2. Begin by drawing the sun and the planets on the whiteboard beginning with the sun at one end and the following planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Do not label them just yet. Now ask the students to raise his/her hand to tell what you have drawn on the whiteboard. They should answer either the planets or the solar system. Next label the sun with the word in English. Now ask the students to raise his/her hand to tell you what the first planet next to the sun is called then label it. Continue labeling each planet one at a time as the students tell you what it is. If they give you the incorrect answer have them try again or call on another student. 3. Now that you have completed labeling the planets in English, introduce the students to the Spanish solar system flashcards one at a time beginning with the sun (sol). Ask the students to repeat the words after you in Spanish. Write each word in Spanish next to the corresponding English word. Once you have gone over these words introduce them to the other solar system flashcard words: planetas, estrellas, galaxia, universo, Vía Láctea, cometa, constelaciones and órbita. QUESTION AND ANSWER ACTIVITY [10 MINUTES] 4. Review the planet words and the other solar system words with the students again. This time point out the similarities and differences between the English and Spanish spellings

FOURTH GRADE, LESSON 11 SOLAR SYSTEM 3 for each of the words. 5. Write one of the questions on the whiteboard (in Spanish only) one at a time. Explain to the students that they should be familiar with some of the words in the phrase (some of the words will be review and some of the words they just learned). After you write the question on the board read it to the class. Now ask them to look at it and raise their hand when they think they know what it means. Call on one of the students to translate the sentence for the class. Now ask someone else to answer the question in Spanish. A single word answer is sufficient but, if you want them to give a complete answer, explain to the students how you would do this. Point out to the students that the answer sentence for each question uses part of the question sentence. Cuál planeta está más cerca del sol? (Which planet is closest to the sun?) Complete answer: El planeta más cerca del sol es Mercurio. Write the next question on the whiteboard and repeat the instructions above: Cómo se llama el quinto planeta? (What is the name of the fifth planet?) Complete answer: El quinto planeta se llama Júpiter. Continue as above with the rest of the phrases. En cuál planeta vivimos? (On what planet do we live?) Complete answer: Vivimos en la Tierra. Cuál planeta está más lejos del sol? (Which planet is farthest from the sun?) Complete answer: El planeta más lejos del sol es Neptuno. REVIEW ACTIVITY [10 MINUTES] 6. Before beginning the next activity review all of the solar system vocabulary words with the students. Tell them that you will erase everything off the whiteboard for the next activity. If the students have been taking any notes ask them to put them away at this time. Explain the next activity to the students: Tell them that you will teach them one more Spanish question phrase which you will write on the whiteboard ( Cómo se dice en español? How do you say in Spanish?) Read the phrase in Spanish to the students and tell them the English translation. Next ask for student volunteers or go around the classroom one at a time asking the students to give you the Spanish word for the English word you will say to them. For example: Cómo se dice Mars en español? The answer is Marte. Do this activity until you cover all the words or you run out of time whichever comes first. 7. Say Adiós to the students and thank them for participating.
