Scene 1 Beyonce s Lunar Adventure Characters Narrator, Beyonce, Solange, Nick, Trey, Ben, Beyonce s Mom, Sally and Cindy Narrator: It is a cold dark night and Beyonce and her friends are sitting around a campfire. Solange: Beyonce, why is that white circle glowing up in the sky? Nick: I know you are young Solange, but you should know that is the moon! Trey: I thought the moon was only a half circle. Are you sure that s the moon? Nick: I think that s called crescent moon when you only see half of the moon. Ben: The moon is just like a balloon, it loses air and changes shape. And on some nights I can t see the moon at all in the sky! Solange: Where does it go Beyonce? Nick: Did you pay attention at all in your science classes? When the moon lies between the sun and the earth it s not visible to the naked eye. Beyonce: Look Solange I m not sure, but I heard there was a woman holding her child in the middle of the moon. Cindy: I heard it was made out of cheese! Narrarator: Beyonce and her friends spent the next couple hours discussing why the moon changes shape over the course of a month. No one could figure out the truth behind the phases of the moon. Beyonce s mother comes over to the campfire to make sure everything is going well. Nick: Hi Beyonce s Mom! We were just talking about the moon. Do you know why the moon changes shape and if it s really made of cheese? Beyonce s Mom: I m pretty sure the moon is made of rock. I m not sure why the shape changes, but I think it has something to do with the way the moon moves. Ben: Do you mean it moves around? Trey: Yeah! It moves around the Earth! 1

Ben: I thought it went where ever it wanted to. Sally: Do you mean it s driven by aliens?!!!! Solange: I don t think aliens have anything to do with the question. Why does the moon change shape? Cindy: I hear the moon reflects light, but if that is true than wouldn t we always see the moon? Why don t we investigate tomorrow! Narrator: Little did the campfire group know that aliens were listening to their conversation in an attempt to spy on Beyonce Data: What do we already know? Questions: What can the characters tell us? Hypotheses: What do you think happened? Learning Issues: What do we still need to know? 2

Scene 2 Characters Narrator, Beyonce, Solange, Nick, Trey, Ben, Cindy, Alien 1, Alien 2 Narrator: There is a giant flash of light next to the campfire and two alien like figures emerge from the light of the spaceship. Alien 1: Greetings earthlings and Beyonce. Alien 2: We come in peace and we heard your questions about the moon. We would like to help you answer your questions, but for a price- an autographed CD from Beyonce. Beyonce: That sounds good to me! Will we all be able to go and investigate? Alien 1: Of course, anything for you Beyonce. Solange: I don t know how I feel about this. Mom doesn t like us to go places with strangers! Trey: They re aliens! How dangerous could they be? Look into those 20 honest green eyes they look harmless! Nick: Come on Solange! How often do we get to go the moon? And what if it is made of cheese? I m getting hungry! Narrator: Beyonce and her friends board the spaceship buckle up and are transported to the moon within seconds. Cindy: WOW THAT WAS FAST!! I wish I had one of these spaceships on earth so getting to my grandmother s house in California would happen in the blink of an eye! Alien 1 and 2: Welcome earthlings to your moon. Nick: Oh no! The moon isn t made of cheese and this moon dust does not taste very good! Bleh!! Trey: It sort of tastes like powdery rocks! Maybe a little salt would help. Solange: Stop joking around guys, we need to investigate Beyonce: Well it doesn t look like the moon changes shape. It looks like one nice perfect sphere from what I can see. 3

Ben: It s also really bright! I can see the sun! I should ve brought my sunglasses. But look over there, it looks like there is side of the moon that s all shade. And this side looks like it gets all sun. Alien 2: You are correct my earthling. The moon does not change shape, it is always a sphere. It just depends on the amount of moon you can see reflected by the sun. Alien 1: Now can I have my autographed CD, Beyonce? Data: What do we already know? Questions: What can the characters tell us? Hypotheses: What do you think happened? Learning Issues: What do we still need to know? 4

Scene 3 Characters Narrator, Beyonce, Solange, Nick, Trey, Ben, Professor Joanna and Cindy Narrator: The next morning in science class, the group is discussing their encounter with the aliens last night. Beyonce: I m going to ask Professor Joanna today about the moon because I m confused about what the aliens told us. Trey: I m confused too! We discussed what appears to be a change in shape. What about solar and lunar eclipse? I mean can the moon change colors? Ben: Yeah I know! I always thought the moon glowed but the Aliens told me that it was reflected by the sun. How would that work? Solange: Also, how does this affect the different shapes of the moon that we see in the sky? Why does the moon look so small on some night? Professor Joanna: Good morning class. Does anyone have any questions before we start the lecture today? Trey: Why does the moon look like it changes shape even though it is always a sphere? Professor Joanna: That s a great question Trey! Why don t you act it out and see if you can figure it out by yourselves in groups of three. See if one person can play the sun, one person can play the earth and one person can play the moon to explain why the different parts of the moon are lit up during the course of a 29 ½ day cycle. Narrator: Everyone got into groups and acted out the moon rotating around the earth while the sun stayed still and lit up different parts of the moon. 5
