Coordinate Measuring Machines BRIGHT-STRATO SERIES CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine Bulletin No. 1855 Moving-bridge type CMM with excellent measuring accuracy. Its measuring envelope is suitable for medium-to-large workpieces.

High-accuracy measuring in the 1µm class*1 Improved Machine Rigidity Provides Excellent Accuracy *1 : Bright-STRATO 700/900 Series World-class measuring accuracy from a moving-bridge type CMM. A model with a maximum measuring envelope of 118.30 x197.05 x59.25 (3005 x 5005 x 1505mm) is available to cover the medium-to-large workpiece range. The FEM analysis below shows a stress distribution comparison within the XZ structure of the previous Bright- STRATO models when the same force is applied to each. This shows that this new Bright-STRATO is more rigid and stable than the previous model. [Comparison of XZ structure rigidity] Old model New model The Y-axis guide is machined into the granite base and the high-rigidity air bearing developed by Mitutoyo retains a stable linear-motion performance for an extended period of time. All parts are produced at Mitutoyo s own CMM plant. DC motor and ball-screw drive mechanisms on each axis allow this CMM to perform continuously at high speed maximums of 16.93 /s (430mm/s)*1 with high acceleration maximums of 66.93 /s2 (1700mm/s2 )*1 Machining the measuring table Base/bridge structure Y-axis guide Machining air bearings 2

High-accuracy Glass Scales Each axis is fitted with a highly accurate glass scale produced at Mitutoyo s lab quality, underground linear scale plant. Condenser lens Scale unit principle diagram Index scale Light source Photoelectric device Main scale Digital Servo Technology The position and speed of Bright-STRATO s moving elements are controlled by digital processing circuits and servos. Digital servo control has the advantages of minimum drift, wide dynamic range and easy installation of alternate control algorithms. An analog drive system generally has a resonant frequency in its response as shown in graph (a). The presence of this resonant frequency causes mechanical vibration that results in the deterioration of accuracy. Graph (b) shows that this resonant frequency is absent from the digital servo system. Also, Mitutoyo has developed LSI circuits specifically for digital servo control, making a significant contribution to size and price reduction of the servo system. [Amplitude/Frequency response of control systems] 30 dbv (a) Analog drive system Resonant Freq 30 dbv (b) Digital servo system dbmag 10dB/ -70 dbv 0.012 LOG FREQ (khz) 5 dbmag 10dB/ -70 dbv 0.012 LOG FREQ (khz) 5 Resistance to External Vibration Vibrations transmitted up through the floor cause measurement variations in a CMM. The auto-leveling pneumatic vibration-damping unit available as an option for the previous model is supplied as a standard accessory with the Bright-STRATO 700/900/1600 series. This vibration-damping unit has the functions of not only isolating the machine from floor vibrations, but also returning it to horizontal quickly by detecting the load variation due to the travel of the bridge or setting of a workpiece with sensors. Auto-leveling pneumatic vibration-damping unit Vibration-damping unit installation 3

Temperature Compensation (Patent Pending) Eliminating Geometric Errors in the Machine Due to Temperature Change Structurally, a CMM does not have the problems a machine tool has with heat generation from motors, bearings, cutting tool, main spindle and coolant. Therefore the potentially negative effects on machine geometry caused by internal heat sources can be eliminated easily by good thermal design. Variations in ambient temperature, however, as well as radiated heat received from external sources, will greatly affect measuring accuracy due to unequal thermal deformation of the CMM elements unless precautions are taken in the machine design. Thermal influence Heat source Heat conduction Thermal change Thermal distribution Errors Room environment (Air conditioning, lighting, geothermal heat, etc.) Heat conduction (within the same object) Temperature gradient Uniform temperature distribution (except for 20 C) Machine main unit Geometric error Dimensional error Human Machine main unit (Control unit, motors, etc.) Heat transfer (between adjacent objects) Thermal radiation Temperature variation Non-uniform temperature distribution Workpiece/ reference gage Geometric error Dimensional error Overall error The following measures are implemented in the Bright-STRATO series to minimize thermally-generated geometry errors due to ambient temperature change. A material with high thermal conductivity is used for major structural members to make the temperature distribution uniform and improve temperature tracking ability. Strains in the joints between structural members due to differential expansion are avoided by using the same material throughout. A thermal expansion relief mechanism is used for components, such as glass scales. Extensive FEM thermal analysis was used to design a thermally symmetric structure that ensures the measuring machine expands evenly. Heat accumulation inside the control unit or covers has been practically eliminated. Relationship between ambient temperature change and squareness errors TEMPERATURE ( C ) Ambient temperature 30 air 25 20 15 1 C/h 2 C/h XY Squareness error XZ Squareness error These graphs show test data for squareness errors between the X, Y and Z axes caused by variation in ambient temperature. The results show that squareness errors in the Bright-STRATO series are held to less than +/-1 arc-second over a wide range of temperature. YZ Squareness error 0 20 40 60 time (hour) 4

Temperature Compensation The Temperature Compensation Function uses information from temperature sensors located on each X, Y and Z axis scale, and the workpiece, to calculate length compensations that are then applied to the scale readings. This system works in conjunction with the design of the main unit that ensures the measuring envelope deforms evenly with change of temperature. This is very different from a system that simply provides a length compensation for a measurement. The system allows high-accuracy measurements to be made while the Temperature compensation system ambient temperature varies within the range specified for guaranteed accuracy.. Temperature sensor Temperature sensors for a workpiece Temperature sensor Temperature sensor Temperature sensor Workpiece Controller Temperature reader 30 25 20 15 error Relationship between ambient temperature change and the resulting change in measured length TEMPERATURE ( C ) Ambient temperature 1 C/h Difference between measured length and standard length (at 20ºC) Temperature compensation ON 2 C/h air Temperature compensation OFF The lower graph shows that the difference between the length actually measured and the standard length (at 20ºC) due to a changing ambient temperature is practically eliminated (no measurement error) if the temperature compensation function is used. 0 20 40 60 time (hour) 5
