INSIDE MARY S HOME ---- Narrator 1: It s getting quite dark, it will soon be night, I ll light the lamps to give me some light. Mary is thinking about the good man she is going to marry. Suddenly a light flashes around the room. (Angel Gabriel appears) Gabriel: Gabriel: Gabriel: It is so bright I can hardly see. (She turns round and sees Gabriel). Who are you? You frightened me! Don t be afraid. God sent me to you. You are special to him. Your heart is true. I don t understand. Why are you here? You don t need to worry; there s nothing to fear. God wants a mother for his own Son, He s chosen you. You are the one. God s chosen me, and not another? I m honoured to be the baby s mother. His name will be Jesus, and this I say, That God will make him a King one day. I know that God will see me through I ll do whatever He asks me to do. (Angel Gabriel exits, Mary kneels during song) SONG 1. I LL DO WHATEVER YOU ASK ME TO DO. ---- SCENE 2. A ROOM IN JOSEPH S HOUSE ---- (Joseph is lying in bed trying to sleep) Narrator 2: Mary, my love, is a gentle lady But now she tells me she s having a baby I don t know whether to laugh or cry, I can t seem to sleep however I lie. Poor Joseph. He s having a bad night. He knows Mary is going to have a baby, and doesn t know whether he should marry her or not. Eventually he falls asleep, but his sleep is full of dreams. (Angel appears to Joseph as he sleeps.) (waking up) I had a dream. An angel came, And said I should marry her all the same. I must not worry, or feel too sad, That baby s going to need a dad. SONG 2. I LL BE A DAD TO THE BABY. (CD tracks 2/13) ---- SCENE 3. ALMOST 9 MONTHS LATER ---- 4 Narrator 3: Messenger 1: Messenger 2: Narrator 4: So Mary and Joseph were married. They lived together in the little town of Nazareth. One day some messengers arrived. Caesar is taking a census, and so The place you were born is where you must go. He needs to know yours, and everyone s name. Just sign the book to say that you came. We have to go to Bethlehem, dear, Just when the baby s time is near. It s alright Joseph, stop worrying. God will take care of everything. So Mary and Joseph pack up their belongings and prepare for the journey. They set off for Bethlehem. Lots of other people are travelling too. It s a very long way.

(Incidental music could play while Mary and Joseph and other travellers make their way to Bethlehem. Music not supplied). ---- SCENE 4. ON THE ROAD NEAR BETHLEHEM ---- (Small groups of travellers pass as Mary and Joseph stop). I need a rest. It s such a long way. I hope we can find somewhere to stay Look. The lights of Bethlehem are in sight, And you will be able to rest all night. SONG 3. CAN YOU SEE THE LIGHTS OF BETHLEHEM? (CD tracks 3/14) (Joseph knocks on innkeeper s door. Innkeeper enters). Innkeeper: Innkeeper: Can we stay here? We need a room. The baby is coming, and very soon. I m very sorry. I don t have a bed. If you like, you can sleep in the animals shed. It will do, Joseph. We ll be able to sleep, Even with donkeys and cows and sheep. If you come with me I ll show you the way You can make a nice soft bed in the hay. ---- SCENE 5. THE STABLE ---- Narrator 5: There in the stable, among all the animals, the special baby was born. Mary nursed her baby while Joseph made a little bed for him in the manger the animals feeding box. (CD tracks 4/15) 5

---- SCENE 6. A HILLSIDE OUTSIDE BETHLEHEM ---- Narrator 6: It is a cold night. Some shepherds are out on the hills looking after their sheep. Move over Nathan, let s feel some heat. It s very cold. I ve got frozen feet. Anything cooking? Or a nice hot drink? My fingers are blue, and my nose is pink. (to audience) If you ask me, it s weird a strange sort of night When anything could happen. I m all up tight! SONG 5. IT S A STRANGE SORT OF NIGHT (CD tracks 5/16) Narrator 7: Angel: Narrator 8: Suddenly a bright light shines all around them. What s going on? And who are you? Is there something I need to do? Where have you come from? And what s that light? I m all of a tremble at the sight. (to audience) Told you it was a strange sort of night! That angel just gave me a terrible fright! A baby is born in a Bethlehem shed You ll find him asleep in a manger bed. All of a sudden the sky was full of angels singing and praising God. SONG 6. ALL THE ANGELS IN HEAVEN ABOVE (CD tracks 6/17) 6 Well, what shall we do? Shall we leave the sheep? And look for the baby that s fast asleep? Shall we see if we can find the shed Where the baby lies in a manger bed? (to audience) Anything could happen I told you so, But enough of my chatter let s get on with the show.

Narrator 9: The shepherds have left their sheep on the hillside. They have found the stable, and Joseph has let them into the stable to see the baby. Now they are kneeling by the manger and worshipping the newborn Son of God. What a beautiful baby! Isn t he sweet? Just look at his tiny hands and feet! Thank you so much for letting us come The baby is lovely and so is his mum! (to audience) Isn t he just the most special thing? Who would believe he was born to be King? SONG 7. Look a new star has appeared in the sky. It shines very brightly. I wonder why. If we look in our scrolls I m sure we ll find out What this new star is all about. (Wise men look in their scrolls) WM 3: WM1: WM2: WM3: Look. It says here the star s for a baby King King of the Jews, and everything! Do you think we ought to go and seek out The King that the star has told us about. We must follow the star through night and day. It s going to be a very long way! We ll need food and clothes and everything And presents for the baby King. 7
