Characteristics of Living Things THAT S LIFE! How do you tell that something is living? You just check to see if the thing has the 7 characteristics of all living things. I. Each picture here represents one of the characteristics. Label each picture with a phrase that tells what characteristic of life it shows. II. The page below shows a student s notes from her science log. She is writing some things she s learned about the characteristics of living things. Fill in the blanks with the missing words. (Choose from the box at the bottom of the page.) Each living thing is called an. The basic unit of structure and function in an organism is the. Three main elements that make up living things are about 10,, and. Water makes up of most organisms. It helps to food through the organism and also helps remove. Oxygen is used by organisms to help release from food. A trait that helps an organism survive and change to fit its environment is called an. OSMOSIS IS NOT A DISEASE cell division Cell Processes Osmosis may sound like a disease. But it is not! It s the name of one of the processes that occupy the lives of living cells. Ozzy Mosis, the budding young scientist, needs help sorting out these processes. For each question, choose one of the words below that names the process. (A word may be used more than once.) homeostasis osmosis diffusion metabolism plasmolysis mitosis active transport respiration 1. Crowded particles in water move from their tight space to a place where there is more room. What s going on? 2. Celery stalk cells go limp when water diffuses out. Why? 3. A cell s nucleus divides into 2 nuclei so 2 new cells can form. What process is this? 4. Cells in a plant root drink in water through the cell membrane. What process is going on? 5. The growth, repair, and use of food in your body are all part of what cell process? 6. Single cells split into 2 cells. What process is this? 7. Cells break down food in a chemical reaction that releases energy. What process is this? 8. During exercise, your body sweats to cool off so its temperature doesn t get too high. What process is this? 9. Energy is used to move particles from a place of lower to higher concentration. What cell process is this? 10. Your body shivers to warm up muscles when you sit on an iceberg in your swimsuit. What cell process is this? 11. What process is the opposite of active transport? 12. What process happens in the cell before cell division can take place? 13. The sum of all chemical changes that occur in an organism is what process?
