Cambridge Technicals Engineering Unit 4: Principles of electrical and electronic engineering Level 3 Cambridge Technical Certificate/Diploma in Engineering 05822-05825 Mark Scheme for January 207 Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations

OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA) is a leading UK awarding body, providing a wide range of qualifications to meet the needs of candidates of all ages and abilities. OCR qualifications include AS/A Levels, Diplomas, GCSEs, Cambridge Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, Functional Skills, Key Skills, Entry Level qualifications, NVQs and vocational qualifications in areas such as IT, business, languages, teaching/training, administration and secretarial skills. It is also responsible for developing new specifications to meet national requirements and the needs of students and teachers. OCR is a not-for-profit organisation; any surplus made is invested back into the establishment to help towards the development of qualifications and support, which keep pace with the changing needs of today s society. This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and students, to indicate the requirements of the examination. It shows the basis on which marks were awarded by examiners. It does not indicate the details of the discussions which took place at an examiners meeting before marking commenced. All examiners are instructed that alternative correct answers and unexpected approaches in candidates scripts must be given marks that fairly reflect the relevant knowledge and skills demonstrated. Mark schemes should be read in conjunction with the published question papers and the report on the examination. OCR will not enter into any discussion or correspondence in connection with this mark scheme. OCR 207

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 (a) (i) I = 24/50 = 0.6 (A) (For applying knowledge from Unit 2, LO3) (ii) R = 50 + 25 = 75 ( ) (For applying knowledge from Unit 2, LO3) I = 24/75 = 0.37 (A) or 0.4 (A) (iii) P = I 2 R = 0.37 2 x 25 P = 0.469 or 0.47 or 0.49 (W) (b) (i) Connect one probe to V/ ma and one probe to COM. Probe ends: one to point X, one to point Y (polarity not important). (For applying knowledge from Unit 2, LO3) Ignore reference to red/black or positive/negative. (ii) Use R total =R + R 2 and R total = R + R 2 R = k +.5 k = 2.5 k /R = /2.5 k + /3.3 k = 422 ( ) or.422 k( ) (iii) Answer must be consistent with answer to (ii), e.g. if answer to (ii) is 422 ( ) or.422 k( ) then / 2000 (For applying knowledge from Unit 2, LO3) Max 2 marks for incorrect parallel resistor combinations, such as R = k + 3.3 k = 4.3 k /R = /.5 k + /4.3 k = 2 ( ) or.2 k( ) 3

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 2 (a) 75 3 Award mark for each correct symbol with value connected in series. Allow 2 marks if inductor symbol with both inductance and resistance indicated. v=20sin34.2t 0.2 mh Allow 20V 50 Hz ac supply. 4

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 (b) 20V Award mark for sine wave as shown (For applying knowledge from Unit, LO4) Award mark for correct value of peak voltage on sketch. 0.02s/20ms 2πf = 34.2 f = 34.2/2π = 50 Hz t = /f = /50 = 0.02 s Award mark for calculation of periodic time. Award mark for correct value of periodic time on sketch. 5

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 (c) 2πf = 34.2 X L = 2πfL = 0.2 x 0-3 x 34.2 = 0.06284( ) Z = R 2 + X L 2 Z = 75 2 + 0.06284 2 Z = 75 ( ) I = V/Z = 20(V)/75 ( ) I = 2.8 A Allow ECF. There must be evidence of calculation of impedance. Allow ECF. (For applying knowledge from Unit 2, LO3) (d) V L = IX L = 2.8 x 0.06284 = 0.76 V Allow ECF for current from part (c) 3 (a) 240 V R f =0.5 3 mark for each of armature, armature resistance and field resistance connected in series. R a = 0.25 I=0 A mark for values of voltage and current (with arrow). mark for resistor values correctly labelled. 0 V Armature Allow marks if: both resistor and inductor symbol used to represent field coil and/or armature symbol includes armature resistance. 6

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 (b) V = E + I(R f +R a ) V = E + 0(0.5 + 0.25) E = 240 7.5 = 232.5 V Award mark for identification of correct formula. For substitution and rearrangement Award mark for correct numerical result with unit. Allow use of E=V+IR t this series only (as quoted incorrectly in version 2 of the formula booklet): E= V+IT t mark id of formula E= 240 + 0(0.5 + 0.25) mark for substitution E+ 240 + 7.5 = 247.5 V mark with correct unit (c) Any suitable application e.g. trains, delivery vehicles, cranes and hoist. Accept any reasonable alternative examples Series wound motors have high torque at start up therefore good for motors which are used for traction/require high initial torque. 4 (a) V RY Resistors or AC power sources drawn in delta arrangement. Three wires drawn. Line voltages correctly labelled V BR, V RY, V YB. V BR V YB 7

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 (b) Accept any one from: colour sequence; current UK colour sequence brown, black and grey. 3-phase 4 wire star connected system. 20 degrees phase shift (between incoming phases) or 0, 20, 240. Allow benefit of doubt if red, yellow, blue seen (c) For a given amount of power transmission, three-phase networks require conductors with a smaller cross sectional area, therefore cheaper as fewer resources needed. Two voltages are available on a three phase network. Also accept other suitable advantages 8

Unit 4 Mark Scheme January 207 5 (a) +V s (Supply +) 3 mark for every 2 correct points. Non-Inverting Input Inverting Input Output -V s (Supply -) i.e. correct labels and correctly drawn symbol. Allow -V S = 0. Maximum 3 marks. (b) (i) Gain = -20 k /0 k = -2 Correct numerical value and sign, no units. (ii) Gain = V out /V in V out = V in x Gain V out = 0.2 x -2 = -2.4 V (iii) Gain = V out /V in V out = V in x Gain, V out = -.5 x -2 V out = +8 V Award mark for correct numerical result With correct unit, and sign. Allow ecf Gain from b(i) Award mark for correct numerical result With correct unit, and sign. Allow ecf Gain from b(i) 6 (a) 4 Award mark if Q correct for 2 rising edges. Maximum 4 marks. Allow ECF Award mark if Q inverse of Q. 9
