Brief for Artist - Snowdonia Solar System Project

1.0 BACKGROUND Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig The 'LEADER' programme in Gwynedd is being administered by Menter Môn in their office in Porthmadog (Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig Programme). Menter Môn is a social enterprise with 20 years of experience in providing rural development projects across North Wales and is responsible for administering both projects LEADER in Gwynedd and Anglesey. LEADER is the term used to describe a particular approach to local development in rural areas. The name comes from an abbreviation LEADER French for 'Liaison Entre Actions pour le Development de L'Economie Rurale', which roughly translates to 'links between actions for the development of rural economy'. It is a scheme funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development which will support activities in rural Gwynedd between 2015 and 2020 within these five themes. The themes are: i. Adding value to local identity and natural and cultural resources. ii. Facilitate pre-commercial development, business partnerships and short supply chains. iii. Exploring new ways of delivering local services non. iv. Renewable energy at a community level. v. Advantage of digital technology.

2.0 OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT The main aim of the project is to recreate the Solar System within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park. This is intended by placing planets and other qualities of the Solar System in buisinesses around the National Park, using the ratio of distances. The model is an effective way of setting the size of the Solar System in its context and adds value to the Dark Sky Reserve status in Snowdonia. For example, if the Sun is located in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the planet Saturn would be placed in Trawsfynydd and Pluto in Tywyn. The intention is to impose models of planets, comets and asteroid belt in businesses which is located in the right places. Businesses are expected to be open to the public (cafes, restaurants, attractions) and agreeing to match the requirements of the plan. A similar model exists in America http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/11386 The 'planets', interpretation and the Solar System package raises awareness and interest of Dark Sky status Snowdonia among the business area (s) involved. By becoming aware of the innovative thinking about how they can take advantage of the Dark Sky status to attract visitors and extend the tourist season. The schoolchildren will collaborate with artists to learn about the solar system, astronomy and the universe broader valuing the Dark Sky Status in Snowdonia and how it can be marketed to benefit the local economy. 2.1 The Artists We are looking to commission local freelance artists to work with schools to create models of planets to be placed in businesses across the Snowdonia National Park. The artists will work with children in primary or secondary schools to create the models, thereby stimulating their interest in astrology. The project will include the creation approx. 12 models which include the planets/ Comets/ Asteroid belt, namely: 1. The Sun 2. Mercury 3. Venus 4. The Earth 5. Mars

6. Jupiter 7. Saturn 8. Uranus 9. Neptune 10. Pluto 11. Comet 12. Asteroid belt 3.0 TENDER Applications are invited from artists to highlight the activities identified in 2.1. We expect original ideas from the artist on how they would deal with the task of creating models of the solar system. Requested an outline of your experience of working with schools and examples of relevant projects that have been completed. It s required that the artist has/ or request for Disclosure and Protection Certificate to ensure the safety of working with children. We will seek to interview artists to discuss their ideas and work schedule. You will need to submit a quote for the work of the artists and include materials for the creation of the model planets. It will be ideal, but not essential, that the artist is able to speak Welsh. 4.0 PRICE AND EVALUATION See the projects budget below: Item Cost (inc VAT) Supplier details Freelance artists (including costs of materials to form the planets.) 10,000 Tendr / Quote from artist.

5.0 Timetable Ideally the project would begin in May 2017 but the timetable is to be confirmed with the businesses, artists and schools. We are flexible with the schedule. 6.0 Additional Information As part of the project Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig will also be working with local companies to create information material to coincide with each planet including: Interpretive plaques on each planet. Workshops for children within the relevant communities with emphasis on their planet. Provide training to raise awareness of the Dark Sky status to employees of businesses. "Milky Way Booklet" to collect stamps at each location. 6.1 Additional ideas Artists are welcome to offer additional ideas beyond the core requirements of this brief. 6.2 Contact / Send your application to the attention of: Rachel Roberts Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig Menter Mon Office 146 High Street Porthmadog Gwynedd LL49 9NU Rachel@mentermon.com (01766) 514057 Closing Date: 26 th May, 2017.
