Colin Bray, OSi CEO Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Collaboration in Ireland

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland Introduction Collaboration between the Irish National Mapping Agency (Ordnance Survey Ireland, OSi) and the Irish Statistics Agency (Central Statistics Office, CSO). Under a joint Memorandum Of Understanding, this collaborative approach is delivering: National SDG reporting platform National Geospatial Linked Data standards Open Data portal for Census 2016 1

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland Ireland s National Mapping Agency Established in 1824 Operates under the Ordnance Survey Ireland Act, 2001 Mandate: To provide a national mapping service in the State creating and maintaining the definitive national mapping and related geographic records Ireland's National Statistical Office Established 1949 Operates under the Statistics Act, 1993 Mandate: "The collection, compilation, extraction and dissemination for statistical purposes of information relating to economic, social and general activities and conditions in the State" 2

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland OSi/CSO Memorandum Of Understanding Aim: To establish a closer working relationship to maximise CSO and OSi data and assets for our mutual stakeholders and in support of the Government s Public Sector Reform agenda Establish joint CSO/OSi technical working group to develop data visualisation Develop technical solution to fulfil Ireland s reporting responsibilities under the United Nations 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Collaboration in developing new data dissemination channels Promote the statistical potential of geospatial data as part of the wider development of the National Data Infrastructure 3

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland OSi Data & System Architecture Authoritative National Object Platform Multi Resolution Data Store National Collaborative Portal 4

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland UNSD/Esri Research Project (commenced May 2017) Project goal is to develop and deploy a new approach for monitoring SDGs using geographic information systems Participation of seven UN Members - Ireland, Mexico, Senegal, Philippines, Qatar, South Africa and Australia OSi and CSO, are participating in partnership with Esri Ireland First part focuses on requirements and deploying a web mapping and data management platform - planned duration of 4 months During the second part data access will be expanded planned duration of 3-6 months In the final part a series of dashboard and information products will be published - planned duration of 4-8 months 5

Articulating the Data Needs for SDGs Ireland Progress to-date in Ireland Developed over 35 indicators and 45 datasets at NUTS 3, county and local area geography Developed Ireland s SDG platform where interested parties can openly access, visualise and download data related APIs Established a joint OSi/CSO/Esri Ireland data governance team Agreed that the Irelands SDG portal will be officially launched at the European Forum for Geography and Statistics (EFGS) Conference in November 6
