Worksheet (master copy for photocopying only) x9 Fact and Information Sheets (master copies for photocopying only) Concert Links to the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 Science (Rocks) They should be encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. They should be helped to develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of scientific enquiry to answer their own questions, including classifying things Identifying and classifying Using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions

Key Stage 3 Science (Chemistry, Earth and Atmosphere) The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Encore Teaching Ideas Matching Game: Match the rock name and description with the rock. Read the name of the rock and the description of its appearance, and match it to the correct rock on the table. Follow up activity: Choose one of the rocks. Draw a picture of it on the sheet. Write the name of the rock. Try to write your own description of what the rock looks like and how it feels? Rock Riddles: Write a riddle that describes the size, shape, texture or colour of the rock. When you have written the riddle, give your riddle to a friend. Can they guess what rock you have written about? (Cross-curricular links to literacy) Rock Riddle Example: I am yellow and sometimes brown. You could say I was tan? I am very smooth. Sometimes I crumble into pieces, even dust! You can find me near the beaches. I am a little bumpy on my sides. Which rock am I? (Sandstone)

Box 2 ( Sed ) - Feely Describing Box Opening Act What s inside the box? Work-pack x1 laminated rock identification sheet x1 teaching ideas sheet x1 laminated contents sheet x2 laminated rock picture cards x11 laminated adjective cards x3 laminated word cards (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) x2 What s in the box? Activity card x1 What s in the box? Worksheet (master copy for photocopying only) Concert Links to the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 Science (Rocks) They should be encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. Using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions Pupils should explore, name, discuss and raise and answer questions about everyday materials so that they become familiar with the names of materials and properties such as: hard/soft; stretchy/stiff; shiny/dull; rough/smooth; bendy/not bendy; waterproof/not waterproof; absorbent/not absorbent; opaque/transparent.

Key Stage 3 Science (Chemistry, Earth and Atmosphere) The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Encore Teaching Ideas (Cross-curricular links to literacy) What s in the Box? : Match the rock in the box to a rock on the table. Put your hand in the box and describe the rock that you can feel (use lots of describing words. Is it soft? Rough? Spiky? Smooth?). Your team must look at the rocks on the table and match the rock in the box to a rock on the table. Use the worksheet to write down your ideas and answers. Rock Poem: Write a short poem that describes the rock (how it feels, what it looks like, its shape, colour, and size). When people read your poem, they have to try and guess which rock it is! Feel, Discuss, Draw, Label: Feel the rock; talk to your partner about how it feels using different describing words; on a piece of A4 paper, draw the rock then colour it in; label it using your describing words.

Box 3 ( Meta-M ) Grouping Box Opening Act What s inside the box? Work-pack x1 laminated rock identification sheet x1 teaching ideas sheet x1 laminated contents sheet (set 1 and set 2) x2 laminated rock group, rock guides x2 laminated rock group activity cards ( Your choice Activity) x1 laminated rock definition sheet x3 laminated fact cards (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic rock) x1 Rock Groups Worksheet (master copy for photocopying only) x1 Venn Diagram Worksheet (master copy for photocopying only) x1 Are they the same? Worksheet? (master copy for photocopying only) Concert Links to the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 Science (Rocks) They should be encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice; using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions They should use simple features to compare objects, materials and living things and, with help, decide how to sort and group them

Compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties Key Stage 3 Science (Chemistry, Earth and Atmosphere) The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Encore Teaching Ideas Your Choice: Sort the rocks into four groups of your choice. Some of the ways that you could sort the rocks are according to colour, weight, how they feel, what they contain or how they are made, it s your choice! Are they the same? Choose two rocks and write the similarities (what is the same) and differences (and what is different). Are they made of the same type of rock? Do they look the same? Do they feel the same? Do they weigh the same? Venn diagram: Pick two features of rocks (for example, it has layers and it is dark in colour); and write them either side of your venn diagram. Now sort through the rocks on your table and write the names of the rock in the correct area of the Venn diagram.

Box 4 ( Volc ) How rocks are used Opening Act What s inside the box? Work-pack x1 laminated rock identification sheet x1 laminated teaching ideas sheet x1 laminated contents sheet x4 laminated postcards x13 laminated photographs x2 laminated Rock Uses activity cards x2 laminated rock picture cards x1 laminated What is rock used for? card x1 laminated rocks and minerals quiz x1 Rock Uses Worksheet (master copy for photocopying only) Concert Links to the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 Science (Rocks) They should be encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice; using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions They should use simple features to compare objects, materials and living things and, with help, decide how to sort and group them Compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties

Key Stage 3 Science (Chemistry, Earth and Atmosphere) The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Encore Teaching Ideas Picture Matching: Match the rock to the photo where it is being used. With your partner/group, talk about why that type of rock has been used to make that particular thing. Can you think of other things that are made out of this rock? Follow up activity: Write down the type of rock and as many different ways that it can be used that you can think of (use the ideas from your discussion to help you)
