Topics Basemaps for Local Government Essential Application-Driven New Ideas Design Strategies Discussion

Basemaps You will have more than one basemap They won t t look like your 1995 ArcView/ArcIMS maps Users won t t turn layers on/off There are many examples on the web already to draw from

Basemaps 1. Public Access 2. Imagery 3. Tax Parcel 4. Utility 5. Elections 6. Public Safety 7. Demographic 8. Land Use 9. Transportation 10. Hydrographic 11. Topographic 12. 3D City 13. Land Development Essential Application Driven Some New Ideas

Essential Basemaps Just tell me what to do to get started 1. Public Access 2. Imagery

Public Access Elevation/Shaded Relief Administrative Boundaries Hydrography Facilities Roads and Railways Tax Parcels Structures Addresses

Imagery Aerial Imagery Administrative Boundaries Facility Names Waterbody Names Road and Railway Names Address Numbers

Demo - Essential Basemaps

Application-Driven Basemaps WTF 1984 1. Tax Parcel 2. Utility 3. Elections 4. Public Safety 5. Demographic 6. Land Use 7. Transportation 8. Hydrographic 9. Topographic

Basemaps New Ideas 1. 3D City Elevation Model (DEM, DSM, Lidar Pt. Cloud, etc.) Imagery Topography Buildings (with height) 2. Land Development Status Proposed Developments

Design Strategies User Requirements Technical Requirements Cartography Considerations

User Requirements What do users need to see Be application driven Specific users At multiple scales Interaction with other app content Keep map requirements high level at first Primary display scales Data themes (primary intent) Representation (point, polygon, line, raster) Labels Popup content Get feedback and refine Tax Parcel Viewer Spec Doc Tax Parcel Public Access Basemap Tax Parcel Basemap

Technical Requirements How are you going to deliver the map Application UI and platform Desktop, web, mobile Single basemap or multiple map services Cached or dynamic map services Spatial reference and tiling schemes

Application Platform Desktop Web Mobile

What types of maps should I cache? Cached service best for: Complex base maps and imagery Data that does not change frequently Non-cached (dynamic) services best for: Data that changes frequently Data layers rendered by attributes that change frequently Data that will be edited

Spatial Reference Need to consider before creating basemap Affects tiling schemes and map scales Options include: WGS 1984 (AGOL Today) Web Mercator (Google, Bing, AGOL Soon) State Plane/Local Projection (Your data) AGOL and Web Mercator tiling schemes and map scales provided in ArcGIS Server

Cartography Considerations It s s time for art class Cartography may impact data model You ll wrestle with symbolizing features Color, scale, symbols and text (labels/annotation) You ve got to do this work in ArcMap MXDs will get complex when structured by scale Many people can critique a map, but there aren t t many who can create a good one

Data Model Generalization of data may be required Additional attributes may be needed too Source data may be used in many layers and at different scales Changes to symbology or number of features being drawn If you re going to publish a dynamic map service, the data should be in the same coordinate system

Feature Symbolization Colors & Symbols Design for each scale level Plan for transitions between scales Use definition queries to control which features are being displayed Use contrast and color to define features Leave room for map overlays Use standard cartographic symbols Avoid complex symbols Try to keep things simple!

Feature Symbolization Labels & Annotation Design for each scale level Plan for space between labels Plan for transitions between scales Use color to associate with features Use standard fonts Use spacing to increase clarity Avoid serif fonts and effects (italics, halos, etc.) Use annotation if placement must be consistent
