Quantum Ergodicity for a Class of Mixed Systems Jeffrey Galkowski University of California, Berkeley February 13, 2013

General Setup Let (M, g) be a smooth compact manifold with or without boundary. We wish to examine the behavior of high energy eigenfunctions of g. Do eigenfunctions concentrate on subsets of the manifold or spread out uniformly? Is this behavior related to the classical dynamics of the geodesic flow on M? e.g. ergodicity, complete integrability J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 2 / 15

Basic Quantum Ergodicity Theorem Theorem (Shnirelman 74, Colin de Verdiére 85, Zelditch 87, Zelditch-Zworski 96) Let (M, g) be a compact manifold with piecewise smooth boundary such that the geodesic flow on S M is ergodic. Let ψ j, j = 1,... be the eigenfunctions of g. Then, there is a full density subsequence of eigenfunctions, ψ jk, such that ψ jk 1. J. High Energy Eigenfunction J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 6 / 15

Phase Space? Ergodic flow actually spreads uniformly in phase space (on S M). Can we get a similar uniform spreading for eigenfunctions in phase space? How can we quantify such notions? J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 7 / 15

Pseudodifferential Operators on R d Definition A Ψ m is a pseudodifferential operator of order m if A(x, D)u = 1 (2π) n e i x y,ξ a(x, ξ)u(y)dydξ for some a C (R d R d ) and ξ α β x a(x, ξ) C α,β ξ m α. a is called the symbol of A (σ(a)). We say A is homogeneous of degree m if σ(a) is homogeneous of degree m in the ξ variables. Remark: We define similar operators use local coordinate charts on manifolds. J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 8 / 15

Defect Measures Definition Let ψ j, j = 1,... be a sequence of functions in L 2. Then, a defect measure, µ, for ψ j is a Radon measure on S M such that for all A Ψ 0, homogeneous pseudodifferential operators of order 0, one has Aψ j, ψ j σ(a)dµ. Theorem S M Let {ψ j, j = 1,...} have sup j ψ j <. Then there exists a subsequence ψ jk with a defect measure µ. J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 9 / 15

Quantum Ergodicity Theorem Theorem (Shnirelman 74, Colin de Verdiére 85, Zelditch 87, Zelditch-Zworski 96) Let (M, g) be a compact manifold with boundary such that the that the geodesic flow on S M is ergodic. Let ψ j, j = 1,... be the eigenfunctions of g. Then, there is a full density subsequence of eigenfunctions, ψ jk, such that ψ jk has a defect measure, µ, and µ µ L where µ L is the normalized Liouville measure on S M. J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 10 / 15

Other Dynamical Assumptions We have an understanding of what happens when the flow is ergodic, but what happens when the geodesic flow is not completely ergodic? Completely integrable? Almost ergodic when considered on only physical space? Marklof-Rudnick (2012) addresses this case. What if phase space is divided? i.e. has an invariant subset on which the flow is ergodic? Can we get a similar quantum ergodicity result? Percival (1973) conjectured that high energy eigenfunctions should follow the quantum classical correspondence principle and hence that eigenfunctions should spread uniformly in areas of ergodicity. J. Galkowski (UC Berkeley) Quantum Ergodicity Mixed Systems Feb. 2013 11 / 15

Main Theorem: Divided Phase Space Theorem (G. 2012) Let (M, g) is be a compact manifold with a piecewise smooth boundary. Let ϕ t be the geodesic flow and suppose that there exists U S M, µ L (U) > 0, µ L ( U \ U) = 0, ϕ t is ergodic on U, ϕ t (U) = U. Let {ψ j, j = 1,...} be the eigenfunctions for g. Then there is a full density subsequence of ψ j such that if any further subsequence ψ jk has defect measure µ, then µ U = cµ L U for some c. Remark: This result can be generalized to a semiclassical setting and to almost orthogonal quasimodes rather than eigenfunctions. J.
