One hectare may contain more than 750 types of trees and 1500 species of higher plants.

Many great systematists. Adlopho Ducke (1876-1959) authority on Hymenoptera and leguminous trees, was motive force behind first Amazonian reserve.

Zootaxa is the most important international journal on systematic zoology at least in terms of number of published pages (30,000+ per year recently). More authors in Zootaxa come from Brazil than any other nation.

Paulo Vanzolini, herpetologist, popular Samba author and singer Biodiversity studies with theoretical background in Brazil go back to the 1960s, with the intense participation of Dr. Paulo Emilio Vanzolini in explanations for the high tropical diversity, especially in Amazonia, which culminated in the Refuge Theory

More recently, Nelson Papavero has been responsible for development of the backbone of a phylogenetic perspective systematics in the Brazilian scientific community. Dalton Amorim s book on phylogenetic systematics has sold thousands of copies in Brazil. Nelson Papavero Dalton Amorim

Ichthyologist Mario DePinna s classic 1991 Cladistics paper on the criteria and tests for proposals of homology (the basis of all taxonomy and phylogenetics) has >500 citations in Google Scholar. This is an astronomical number of citations for a paper on the theory and practice of systematics.

Brazil hosts international meetings for separate taxonomic groups every year, and these are always well attended. For phylogenetics in general, Brazil hosted the Willi Hennig Society in 1998 and 2011. 2011 UNESP Rio Preto runs a large popular workshop on the methods of phylogenetic reconstruction, in its fourth year. Workshop organizers: Fernando Noll & John Wenzel

Herpetologist, popular Samba author and singer Dr. Paulo Emilio Vanzolini Wikipedia: He is best known by his samba compositions, including the famous 'Ronda' and 'Boca da Noite', So, how is the Refuge Theory doing?

135 million years ago, The center of a supercontinent.

Islands formed in the interior could generate diversity locally that later becomes a great diversity regionally. This operational explanation still has high status. But, what constitutes diversity?

Most Diversity indeces measure abundance and evenness. Shannon-Wiener (S. -Weaver) Simpson Index Dominance Index Reciprocal Index Berger-Parker Dominance Margalef Richness Menhinick Index Renyi Index Gini Coefficient Buzas and Gibon s Index Equitability Index Hill Numbers Whittaker Index Sorensen s Index Routledge beta-r Index Jaccard Index Mountford Index Bray curtis Gamma Diversity Preston Diagrams Lorenz Curves Rarefaction Curves

What is Diversity? Numbers only, or character, also? Versus We have the same problem with evolutionary units. Evolutionary diversity should consider relationships, uniqueness, and age. Versus

Phylogenetic perspectives: Ancestry and age. All of these are endemic to South America. Most recent split More recent split Most ancient split

Endemism is because hard to define because the unit of measure is elusive. How many independent units? A Four different species Two different genera All one Family Counting species is not enough. Few species in many Families is better than many species in a few Families. B C D

Perhaps we are interested in places that generate diversity, not those that have diversity. New York is the most diverse human population on Earth. But this diversity was not generated in New York. The majority of residents were born in other nations. The diversity of New York is due to mixing endemic types from elsewhere.

How does this relate to the Amazon? Among many signals, we can see the relationsip in the parasites of certain fershwater fish. Rays are usually marine, but there is a wonderful radiation of rays in the Amazon.

Nested relationships of organisms imply different ages of faunas.

Areas of endemism keep getting smaller, and identified most by regions marginal to the Amazon Cracraft 1985 Lopesosorio Lopez-Osorio 2011 Silva et al. 2005

Myers et al. 2000, Evolutionary hot spots. Amazonia is a topographical concept, not an historical biogeographic entity, with parts of Amazonia more related to areas outside Amazonia than to other of the Amazonian subareas. Amazonia is a hybrid zone.

No worries. Hybrid zones Rock.
