F Galland et al: Extraslar planets and brwn dwarfs arund A-F type stars 3 The peridgram f the radial velcities is displayed in Fig 1 (center) We used the CLEAN algrithm (Rberts et al 1987) in rder t remve the aliases linked with the tempral sampling f the data (this algrithm iteratively decnvlves the windw functin frm the initial dirty spectrum) We used nly ne iteratin here, with a gain lp value f ne A clear peak appears at a perid f 284 days It is nt a sampling effect, given the windw functin (Fig 1, bttm) Figure 2 shws the radial velcities phased with this perid It is cnsistent with this peridicity in the radial velcity variatins In additin, we calculated the false-alarm prbability f this signal T d s, we perfrmed a Fisher randmizatin test (Linnell Nemec & Nemec 1985): the radial velcities are shuffled randmly with the same time-series as bservatins, then the peridgram is calculated; this is repeated many times (5 here), and the number f peridgrams cntaining a pwer higher than the ne fr the 284 days signal in the measured radial velcities is stred The false-alarm prbability fund this way is lwer than 21 5, cnfirming the significance f this 284 days signal Table 2 ELODIE best rbital slutin fr HD 18777 Parameter HD 18777 P [days] 2844± 1 T [JD-24] 532443± 3 e 2±1 γ [km s 1 ] 11± 1 ω [deg] 56±4 K [km s 1 ] 12±2 N meas 39 σ(oc) [km s 1 ] 394 a 1 sin i [1 3 AU] 31 f(m) [1 6 M ] 47 M 1 [M ] 17 m 2 sin i [M Jup ] 25 a [AU] 22 4 A brwn dwarf arund HD 18777 41 Main variatin: rbital parameters We fit the radial velcities with a Keplerian slutin (Fig 2) The rbital parameters derived frm the best slutin are given in Table 2 The amplitude is 12 km s 1, which is cnsistent with the value f the peak in the previus peridgram The rbital perid is 284 days, and the eccentricity is 2 Assuming a primary mass f 17 M, the cmpanin mass falls in the brwn-dwarf dmain, with a minimum mass f 25 M Jup Nte that a value f 4 fr sin i (see Sect 2) wuld result in a true mass value f 62 M Jup ; we even cannt cmpletely exclude the case f a lw mass M dwarf The separatin between this candidate brwn dwarf and the star is 2 AU The dispersin f the residuals is 394 m s 1 They are much larger than uncertainties (als clearly seen n the individual residuals, Fig 2), suggesting anther surce f radial velcity variatins This surce shuld nt be a cmpanin since there is n satisfactry Keplerian fit t these residuals cnsidering the case f nly ne cmpanin (in additin t the abve brwn dwarf) 42 Checking the translatin f the spectra We check here that the abve peridic signal is nly due t a peridic translatin f the spectra, withut simultaneus change in the shape f the lines that wuld crrespnd t variatins that are intrinsic t the star T d s, we cmpute the crsscrrelatin functin f each spectrum with a binary mask These crrelatin functins represent the mean line prfile f each spectrum, and they are displayed in Fig 3 (tp, left) Nte that this is a standard way t measure the radial velcities fr slar-type stars The crrelatin functins shw a dispersin frm ne t the ther, ptentialy due in part t a translatin, visible in particular in the znes f large slpe The dispersin f the psitins f Gaussian fits made cnsidering nly these znes is 87 m s 1 Fig 2 Tp: ELODIE radial velcities and rbital slutins fr HD 18777 Bttm: Residuals t the fitted rbital slutin In rder t detect peridic variatins in the lines f the spectra, we calculated the tempral peridgram crrespnding t each pint f the crss-crrelatin functins We then summed all these peridgrams, s as t enhance the variatins ccuring alng all the crss-crrelatin functins This summed peridgram is displayed in Fig 3 (tp, right) A clear peak appears at a frequency crrespnding t a perid f 284 days The radial velcities fund cnsidering the center f the Gaussian fits are cnsistent with the nes measured in Sect 3, given the uncertainties We then translated the crss-crrelatin functins t crrect them frm the rbital slutin fund in Sect 41 The results are displayed in Fig 3 (bttm, left) The dispersin f the psitins f Gaussian fitted nly t the znes f large slpe is nw 41 m s 1, half the value fund previusly It is als cnsis-
