Page 2 of 22 DFT benchmarking studies: As discussed in the computational section, the calculated Gibbs energy values throughout the article were obtained at the B3LYP/BS2//B3LYP/BS1 level of theory. The validity of this was tested with respect to the experimental electron affinities for [ 2 ] and [ 3 ] that were reported by Rademann et al. 1 As such, calculations were carried out on the corresponding stationary points (quartet- 2, triplet-[ 2 ], doublet- 3 and singlet-[ 3 ] ) at different levels of theory (Tables S1 and S2). In addition, a bond length and angle comparison study was performed among optimized structures of quartet- 2 and triplet-[ 2 ] at different levels of theory (Table S3). Table S1.
